Page 3 - INTERCOLONIAL FOOTBALL MATCH.
INTERCOLONIAL FOOTBALL MATCH,
The Essendon Club engaged in their third
contest with a South Australian team on
Wednesday afternoon, when they met the
South Adelaide Club on the Kensington O val.
The weather was by no means favorable for
the display of such a game as football, but in
spite of this a very large number of spectators
were present, and at one period of the after
noon there could not have been less than
7,000 persons present. Unfortunately for
those who had sacrificed their holiday in order
to witness the match, the game was rather
one-sided, and the local team did not do so well
as wa3 expected of them. The Essendons played
a good game throughout, and it was notice
able that the greatest good feeling appeared to
prevail between the two teams. The South
Adelaides won the toss, and Power, the
Essendon captain, kicked off towards the
south gaol. As soon as the ball had been
kicked off the Souths made a rush and scored
two behinds. The visitors did not seem to
have warmed up at this point, and the play of
J. Bissett for the local team evoked loud
applause. The turn of the Essendons soon
came, however, and they rushed the ball up
fco the Souths' quarters and scored a behind.
After a little play on the wing the visitors
scored another behind, and this success was
followed up by their kicking three more
behinds, one of the tries beiog very close up
to goal. At length a scrimmage occurred in
front of the South Adelaides' goal, and Power
securing the leather put the ball through
the sticks, After the kick-off the play
was on the east wing, but Aitken and Bishop
brought the ball back, and Pitcher had a shot
for goal without success. There was now some
fast play in the Souths' quarters, and several
attempts were made to secure goals without
avail. Rout had a comparatively easy shot,
but he was unable to do what was desired of
him. The Souths made a desperate effort,
and the play raged from the centre to the
wing, but the Essendons were too powerful,
and the object of contention was again taken
in the vicinity of the local goal. The play of
Iney Mehrtens at thi3 juncture was capital,
but all bis efforts to get away were fruitless.
Hughes had a shot for goal, out although the
ball went dangerously near the sticks nothing
resulted. At length Aitken got hold of
the sphere, and running up to the
goal punted it through amidst cheers.
On the kick-off the Essendons were again to
the fore, but J. Bissett got along the wing,
and Eames had a long shot for goal unsuccess
fully. The leather was rushed back to the
other end in spite of the brilliant efforts of
Wattling and others, and Power scored the
third goal with a running kick. Half-time
was thin called, the score being—Essendon,
8 goals and 13 behinds; South Adelaides, 2
behinds. On lesuming play it was feared
lliat. tl e game would be very much one sided,
but the Souths responded to the call of their
captain, and made a splendid rush towards the
Essendons' goal. A scrimmage took place at
close quarters, and B. Mehrtens securing the
ball kickedthe only goal obtained by the local
men, rinsing cheers greeting this feat. After
this the Essendons again prevailed, and Tin
dall marking in front kicked their fourth
goal. There were numerous other attempts
on the part of the visitors to score, and
after a few unsuccessful tries Power got
a mark from Aitken, and kicked goal number
five. The Souths attempted again and again
to run the blockade, but were unable to
withstand their wary opponents, although
they got the leather down, and Eames made
a good shot for goal. Nearly all the members
of the Essendon team had tries for goal, until
Steel and Nally were able to credit their side
with two morp goals. The Souths responded
with a good rush, and Wardrop had a long
kick,,and;Watson within range tried to nego
tiate the leather between the sticks, his effort
unfortunately not beiDg attended by that
success which the spirit of the action de
served. These may be said to have been the
dying efforts of the Souths, and when time
was called it was found that the Es
sendons had scored 7 goals and 27 be
hinds against 1 goal and 4 behiuds.
Mr. Kellett, of the Port Adelaide club,
officiated as umpire, and his decisions in
nearly all instances gave satisfaction to both
teams.
