State Appoints
Committee On
Homosexuality
SYDNEY Monday. — A
committee of inquiry into
the causes and treatment
of homosexuality has been
appointed by the State
Government. The Attorney-
General, Mr. Downing, said
today the committee would
make an exhaustive scien-
tific investigation, possibly
lasting two years.
He said the inquiry
would be confined to the
causes and treatment and
was not concerned with
amendment of the existing
law.
"The Government con-
siders that the problem
must be attacked with vig-
our," Mr. Downing said.
"The first, and perhaps
the most important step is
to obtain a scientific
evaluation of the problem
and its possible solution.
The committee com-
prises six members, but
may be enlarged.
Members of the commit-
tee are: Professor W. H.
Trethowan, Professor of
Psychiatry, University of
Sydney, Dr. D. W. J. Hens-
ley, senior lecturer, school
of Biochemistry, University
of Sydney; the Rev. R. C.
Weir, Rector of the Parish
of Kingsgrove, who is the
Anglican court chaplain,
and a member of the Civil
Rehabilitation Committee;
the Rev. Father John
Roche, Parish Priest, St.
Benedict's Church, Broad-
way, who for several years
was a chaplain in the Aus-
tralian Navy; Mr. J. A.
Morony, Deputy Comp-
troller of Prisons; and Mr.
M. F. D. Hayes, senior
field officer of the Prisons
Department.
Mr. Downing said the
opening of Cooma prison as
a special institution for
convicted homosexual of-
fenders would facilitate the
investigation.
