Wimbledon next target, says; Borg
PARIS, Monday (AAP-Reu
ter). — Bjorn Borg, of Sweden,
still the king of tennis, set his
sights today on a sixth successive
Wimbledon title after taking the
coveted French crown for the
sixth time yesterday.
The remarkable Swede, 25 two
days ago, dropped the second and
fourth sets but blitzed Ivan Lendl,
of Czechoslovakia, in the other three
for a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2,3-6, 6-1 triumph.
It was the hardest of his six
French finals.
"I knew it would be very tough",
he said. "Ivan's best surface is clay.
He has a perfect game for here and,
I expected a long match".
The sets were the first he had
dropped in France this year and
Borg said the idea of losing had
occurred to him after the fourth set.
"That was a tough moment, but I
just said to myself 'there's only one
set to go, give everything you can'
Asked if the years at the top were
beginning to tell on hijn, Borg re
plied, "I don't feel old, in fact I'm
still very young. I'm not in decline
and I'll certainly be back next year".
But Lcndl, 21, is full o( the will
to win and has the talent to-do so
in future .years.. He has certainly
given Borg something to worry
about.
The Czechoslovaks set their firm
stamp on .the tournament with Lendl ,
coming close to the men's title and
Hana Mandljkova taking the
women's title from the long-standing
"queen of clay", American Chris
Lloyd.
