First-Year Experience

The First-Year Experience is a central, foundational element of the Arts & Sciences Curriculum.

All Trinity first-year studentsparticipate in a cohort-based First-Year Experience (FYE), a central element of the new Arts & Sciences Curriculum that emphasizesconnections, curiosity, and humility. The FYE introduces students to an intellectual communityfrom the moment they arrive, reflecting these core values in all its activities.

  • Connections: Duke is a big place. Being part of a cohort allows new students to build connections – with their peers, with faculty, and across ways of thinking and experiences – that provide a firm foundation for their entire college careers.
  • Curiosity: By taking on some of today’s most pressing questions through an interdisciplinary lens, the First-Year Experience fosters a mindset that promotes openness to new ideas.
  • Humility: The First-Year Experience encourages students to recognize the limitations of their own knowledge and cultivate a growth mindset. Developing the skills necessary to engage with others’ viewpoints in a constructive, respectful manner is key to students’ success at Duke and beyond.

Students may complete the First-Year Experience through participation ineither Constellations or the FOCUS program. Each option provides a wide variety of themes for students to explore through a set of three interconnected courses across multiple disciplines.

Constellations

In Constellations, students explore a timely topic from multiple disciplines and perspectives with some of Duke’s most esteemed faculty. Once matched with a Constellation, students delve into a central question in three courses in their first year: one in the fall, another in the spring, and their first-year writing course (Writing 120) in one of the two semesters.

FOCUS

FOCUS is an exciting opportunity for first-semester Duke students to be exposed to ideas from the vantage point of different disciplines across the Arts & Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. Each multidisciplinary cluster provides a range of seminar courses, and students enroll in two of these courses in their fall semester and a first-year writing course (Writing 120) in the spring semester. Additionally, FOCUS features a residential community element.
