Where to Shop on your Visit to New York City

      1 of 1

There’s no doubt that New York City is a hub for fashion.

Aspiring fashion designers and models flock here for a spot in New York’s fashion scene. Inspiration never stops flowing here, and the result is a constant flow of new trends and shops. From the old to the new, make sure you check out these four stores.

      Macy’s Herald Square

Macy's Herald Square is the USA’s largest department store, making it an icon and definitely somewhere worth checking out. But be warned, for this store is not for the faint of heart. It covers over 2 million square feet and has 11 levels. You can find anything you could possibly imagine in here, including clothes, shoes and beauty, to kitchenware, gourmet foods and even a nail salon. If you’re willing to brave the crowd of shoppers, it’s worth it just to say you’ve been to America’s largest department store.

      Dover Street Market

If Dr. Seuss designed a high-fashion marketplace, it would look something like Dover Street Market (DSM). Rei Kawakubo, creator of DSM and fashion brand COMME DES GARÇONS, said she wanted to “create an ongoing atmosphere of beautiful chaos” at DSM. A cartoonish purple tunnel of stairs leads to a rack of menswear framed by neon foam blocks. It’s truly a place where fashion, art and ingenuity collide.

New Yorkers come to Beacon's Closet to sell or trade their vintage clothes for cash or store credit, and the result is magical. Carrie Peterson founded Beacon’s Closet with a mission to support ethical practices and sustainability. With her partners, Beacon’s Closet has one Manhattan location and three Brooklyn locations. Satin kimonos hang alongside secondhand Rag & Bone and Philip Lim pieces. You can count on Beacon’s Closet for awesome fashion finds.

      STORY

Created by Rachel Shechtman, STORY is a new and exciting take on a conventional store. It’s run like a gallery or a magazine, meaning, every four to eight weeks, STORY closes its doors and completely reinvents itself under a new theme or “story”. According to the theme, a new floor plan and store layout is designed, and completely new merchandise is sold. Past stories include "Color," which worked with Benjamin Moore to sell all merchandise in a variety of hues. This is truly a unique store that is worth visiting.
