      Old West History and Heritage

Durango's rich heritage is well-preserved in the Main Avenue Historic District, where Victorian-era buildings echo Durango's mining-town past. Local museums and heritage sites like the Durango & Silverton Railroad Museum and the Animas Museum bring the Old West to life while honoring the Indigenous cultures that shaped the region. Just west of town lies Mesa Verde National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site home to more than 500 extraordinary cliff dwellings of the Ancestral Puebloans. Take a guided tour to wander through centuries-old villages tucked into canyon walls and gain insight into the lives of the people who built them. Delve deeper at Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, home to the highest known density of archaeological sites in the USA and explore the Southern Ute Cultural Center & Museum, where interactive exhibits and Native artisans tell the story of Colorado's Southern Ute people.

      Year-Round Outdoor Adventure

Craving outdoor adventures? Durango is Colorado's ultimate four-season playground. Winter draws skiers and snowboarders to the slopes of Purgatory Resort, while thrill-seekers enjoy fresh powder in the San Juan backcountry. Snowshoeing through quiet forests and snowmobiling across open meadows are exhilarating ways to explore the terrain. As the snow melts and spring rolls in, trails around Durango open up for hiking, mountain biking and camping. The nearby San Juan National Forest is a haven for nature lovers and wildlife watchers. On warm days, the Animas River becomes a hotspot for rafting, kayaking, paddleboarding and some of the best fly fishing in the region. Fall brings vibrant foliage and crisp mountain air - the perfect atmosphere for scenic drives along the San Juan Skyway and leaf peeping.
