Beaches to Gardens
Naturally, the Lake Michigan shoreline ranks as a top draw in Evanston. Park grounds surrounding another national landmark, the Grosse Point Lighthouse, serve as a beacon for both history and outdoors lovers. Traverse trails on foot or by bicycle, explore wildflower and butterfly gardens, and dip your toes into the lake. Tours of the 1874 lighthouse are available Saturdays and Sundays from June to September. Go to the Northwestern University Sailing Center to try sailing, windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking. Rent a boat, take a class, or join a group outing. Wind down, or play a game of volleyball. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy at the expansive sandy beach at Centennial Park, which is just a few blocks from downtown Evanston hotels. Fly in to international airports O’Hare (ORD) or Midway (MDW), where you can rent a car and drive about 35 minutes to an hour to get to Evanston. Trains, shuttles, buses and ride-share services also are available at the airports.
