11 Eylül 2003'te Ritter,8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter (Genç Kızımla Çıkmak İçin 8 Basit Kural) dizisinin setinde prova yaparken hastalandı. Bolca terliyordu, kusuyordu ve göğüs ağrısından şikayet ediyordu. Aynı akşam Saat 18.00'de Providence Saint Joseph Tıp Merkezine alındı. Ritter başlangıçta acil servis doktorları tarafındankalp krizi nedeniyle tedavi edildi; ancak durumu hızla kötüleşti.[1] Doktorlar daha sonra Ritter'ın aort diseksiyonu olduğunu belirledi ve saat 22:48'de öldüğü ilan edildi. 55 yaş doğum gününe 6 gün vardı.[2]
15 Eylül 2003 tarihindeLos Angeles'ta özel bir cenaze töreni düzenlendi, ardından Ritter, Los Angeles'ınHollywood Hills'deki Hollywood Hills Mezarlığı'nda Forest Lawn'da toprağa verildi.[3][4]
2008 yılında, Ritter'ın dul eşi Amy Yasbeck, kendisi ve Ritter'ın çocukları adına, Burbank'ta Ritter'ın tedavisi ve Providence St. Joseph Tıp Merkezi'nde yer alan doktorlara karşı dava açtı. Providence St. Joseph Tıp Merkezi aleyhindeki davalar 9.4 milyon $ karşılığında mahkemeye çıkarıldı.[5] Radyolog Matthew Lotysch ve kardiyolog Joseph Lee'den ikisine karşı 67 milyon dolarlık yanlış ölüm davası yargılandı. Yasbeck, ölüm gününde Ritter'ı tedavi eden Lee'yi, durumunu kalp krizi olarak yanlış teşhis etmekle suçladı ve ona iki yıl önce tam vücut taraması yapan Lotysch, o zaman Ritter'in aort genişlemesini tespit edemedi.[6] 2008 yılında, Los Angeles İlçe Yüksek Mahkemesi'nde jüri, Ritter'ı öldüğü gün tedavi eden doktorların ihmalkar olmadığı ve bu nedenle ölümünden sorumlu olmadığı sonucuna varmıştır.[7][8]
