Jesse Blacksmith ve Bela Suifer'ın oğludur. Gerçek adıIsadore Soifer'dir. Birçok filmin film müziklerinin yaratıcısıdır. Annemarie Hollger ile evliliğinden Steven, Elissa, Dylan adlarında üç çocuğu oldu. 8 Eylül 1991'de Los Angeles'ta pankreas kanseri sebebi ile öldü.

Alex North'un meşhur bestesiUnchained Melody tüm zamanların gelmiş geçmiş en popüler şarkısıdır. Parça 1955 yılında ilk kez yayınlandıktan sonra peşpeşe farklı yorumlarla ortaya çıkmıştır. Parçanın bir başka özelliği de enstrümantalden canlıya her formda kaydedilmiş olmasıdır.
