Equine Health Advisory - EHV-1
Tennessee State Parks is monitoring confirmed cases of Equine Herpesvirus Type 1 (EHV-1) reported in Waco, Texas and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. EHV-1 is a contagious equine respiratory and neurological disease that can be fatal in horses. It does not transmit to humans.
Out of an abundance of caution, and in coordination with the Tennessee Department of Agriculture and Tennessee Equine Hospital, the following precautionary measures are effective immediately at all Tennessee State Parks with equine facilities, wrangler camps, or horse trails:
- No horses that have recently traveled through Waco, TX or Oklahoma City, OK are permitted on park property.
- Shared water sources are suspended. All communal water troughs have been removed.
- Any horse displaying symptoms such as nasal discharge, coughing, fever, lethargy, incontinence, or loss of coordinationwill be denied entry or isolated pending veterinary guidance.
These measures are temporary and will remain in effect until the Tennessee Department of Agriculture and the State Veterinarian determine that the regional risk has subsided.
