Sentinel Prime hails from an older time whenCybertron was the galaxy's crown jewel and theTransformer race was full of promise and potential. The only known remainingPrime, he personified what a leader should be: wise, compassionate, and a more than worthy warrior. Revered by bothAutobot andDecepticon, few would dare stand against his shield andPrimax Blade.

But when Sentinel was presumably lost forever aboard theArk,Optimus Prime, his hand-picked successor, was left to fill his void. The loss of Sentinel signaled the end of Cybertron's golden age, and the planet spiraled deeper into war. Some who recall Sentinel's reign bitterly remember when Transformers were masters of their fate, rather than scattered to the stars and living as exiles. Above all, Sentinel Prime is a staunch patriot. He loves his home planet with all of hisSpark and will do anything—even go to extremes—to protect it.

Long ago, Sentinel Prime was the leader of the Autobots before Optimus Prime during the war onCybertron. But as the conflict dragged on, with no end in sight, Sentinel found himself forced to make a drastic choice: a secret alliance withMegatron. Believing that it was only through the sacrifice of another world that Cybertron could be restored, Sentinel developed teleportationalspace bridge technology to transport resources across interstellar distances—but, knowing that Optimus would never condone his course of action, Sentinel kept his plans a secret, claiming the bridge was a means of transporting troops into battle. Sentinel's intention was to depart for the chosen planet—Earth—and meet Megatron there later, but during the battle that erupted around the departure of Sentinel's ship theArk, the vessel was damaged and sent spiralling off into the depths of space, presumed lost forever. The war was left to continue with none save Megatron aware of Sentinel's treachery.

In1961, theArk crashed on Earth'smoon. The impact was detected byNASA, triggering the space race of the 1960s and leading to theUnited States of America's eventual first trip to the moon in1969, which was secretly an attempt to inspect the crashed alien ship. However, beforeApollo 11 got there, a team of Decepticons led bySoundwave, who had tracked the vessel, removed the majority of the space bridgepillars from the ship to keep them out of human hands. The NASA astronauts found no trace of them, nor of Sentinel himself, safely sealed in the ship's crash vault with five remaining pillars.

In the present day, a mission toChernobyl and an encounter withShockwave and hisDriller resulted in Optimus Prime's Autobots discovery of a piece of theArk, which had been recovered by a later Russian moon mission. Demanding information from new National Security DirectorCharlotte Mearing, Optimus learned that the ship was on the moon, and subsequently traveled there withRatchet to find and retrieve Sentinel Prime. Taking his mentor's body back to Earth, Optimus revived him with theMatrix of Leadership, and Sentinel awoke in a crazed rage, briefly attacking Optimus before coming to his senses. Sentinel explained the space bridge to the Autobots and humans, lamenting the seeming loss of the pillars that the Decepticons had stolen, and took an immediate dislike to Mearing when she ordered the few remaining pillars taken into custody. Optimus proceeded to give Sentinel a tour of Earth, which led the old Autobot to marvel at the beauty and the life of the planet, after which Optimus offered Sentinel the Matrix back. Sentinel turned it down, feeling unable to lead on a planet he did not know, and telling Optimus that he was now his teacher, rather than his protege.

Discovering evidence that the Decepticons held the missing pillars, the Autobots' young human allySam Witwicky believed that the villains would soon be coming after Sentinel Prime, since only he could activate the technology. Several Autobots escorted Sentinel Prime back to NEST headquarters, fending off ateam of Decepticons along the way, but once they had arrived at their destination, Sentinel allowed his facade to drop. Knowing that all was in readiness, he revealed his centuries-long alliance with Megatron by slayingIronhide with hisCosmic Rust cannon, tearing NEST headquarters apart to reclaim the pillars, and departing to meet his Decepticon co-conspirators at theLincoln Memorial. There, Sentinel opened a small space bridge portal above, through which Decepticon troops in waiting on the moon poured. Optimus Prime arrived and pleaded with Sentinel to stop, but Sentinel refused, leading to a battle between the two. Sentinel overpowered his former pupil, but spared his life.

Sentinel proceeded to deceive theUnited Nations, claiming that he and the Decepticons would harmlessly take the resources they needed from Earth and depart with no further bloodshed if Optimus and his "Autobot rebels" were exiled from the planet. The humans wasted no time in agreeing, and theXantium was launched with Earth's remaining eleven Autobots inside... whereuponStarscream blew the shuttle to bits. With their primary opponents now believed obliterated, the Decepticons set about conquering the city ofChicago and positioning pillars in strategic locations around the world. Megatron gloated over the success of their partnership, but Sentinel was quick to violently and physically remind him that he was workingwith Megatron, notfor him.

With the pillars in place, Sentinel activated the space bridge, opening a huge portal above the Earth through which Cybertron itself began to materialize. Earth was not without defenders, however: Optimus and the Autobots had, in fact, staged their deaths, and had arrived in Chicago to stop Sentinel's plot. Optimus shot out the control pillar with the deceased Shockwave's cannon, deactivating the bridge, leading a furious Sentinel to engage him in battle once more. Unlike their last bout, Optimus held his own, leading Sentinel to call upon Decepticon fighter ships to fire on his ex-apprentice, while he broke off to fight his way through the other Autobots in an attempt to escape. NEST soldiers destroyed the ships, allowing Optimus to pursue Sentinel and re-engage him, but this time, Sentinel took the upper hand when he severed one of Optimus's arms.

Just before Sentinel could deliver the killing blow, however, he came under attack from Megatron, who, thanks to the goading of Sam's girlfriendCarly Spencer, had realized the threat Sentinel posed to his leadership and had decided to once again take his rightful place at the top of the command chain. At the same time, the other Autobots destroyed the reactivated control pillar, thus destroying the space bridge and apparently Cybertron with it. Though Megatron's attack on Sentinel saved Optimus's life, the Autobot leader refused Megatron's offer of a truce and killed his eternal foe, leaving Optimus and the now-badly-damaged Sentinel alone once more. Sentinel abandoned his pride; he pleaded with Optimus for mercy, claiming all he ever wanted was the survival of their race. Optimus countered that Sentinel hadn't betrayed the Autobots, but ratherhimself, and as his treacherous mentor howled at the ruination of his plans, Optimus unceremoniously executed Sentinel Prime with Megatron's fusion shotgun.Dark of the Moon

Sentinel Prime was a direct descendant of the first Cybertronian,Primus, and was believed to be the last of thePrimes. He told tales to his much younger Cybertronian brethren of how theDynasty of Primes had called upon a legendary artifact, the star-poweredAllSpark, to give life to their world. But the AllSpark had been lost to history, and their world had tumbled through the cosmos without a star to orbit for eons. Sentinel Prime had plans to rectify this, and he gathered followers who believed in his path to a new age of life on Cybertron. With the help ofOptimus,Megatron, and their legions, they searched the planet for the legendary artifact and a way to power it. However, there were theThetacons, a tribe of separatist Transformers who disbelieved in Sentinel Prime's vision, and warred against him and his followers. This conflict ended when, with the help ofWheeljack, a sun to orbit was brought to Cybertron, and the AllSpark discovered and energized.

Though Sentinel Prime had finally returned the forgotten concept of "freedom" back to Cybertron, he felt he no longer had a part in its path to the future. He was old and tired, and spoke in confidence to Optimus, believing that young Autobot was also part of the Prime lineage and requesting that he take on the mantle of leadership. Though Optimus was too humble to accept, not believing Sentinel's claims about his heritage, Megatron overheard their conversation and became jealous of his "brother."Foundation #1 Sentinel formulated another plan for Cybertron's future: it would be governed by Optimus'sScience Division and Megatron'sDefense Force. By having Optimus investigate the remains of the Primes' civilization, it would encourage him to believe in his lineage.Foundation #2

Alas, after two generations of successful shared leadership, Megatron fell under the sway ofThe Fallen, and reshaped his Defense Force as theDecepticons, declaring war on Cybertron. Sentinel Prime was at the archaeological dig in Simfur when the first strike took place, and was quick to opt for a technique of self-preservation, rather than attempting to save the Science Division's work. Optimus soon arrived to fend the Decepticons off, and revealed that his studies had proven the truth of Sentinel's words: he was indeed a descendant of the Primes. He did not believe that this made him a born leader, but Sentinel impressed upon Optimus the necessity that he take up command of theAutobots, that Cybertron might be saved from Megatron's destructive ambitions.

As time passed, and the war rolled on with no signs of stopping, Sentinel Prime was forced to make a deal with Megatron to seek out another planet whose resources they can exploit to restore their homeworld. The chosen planet was the resting place of the Primes' Star Harvester. Sentinel recreated the Primes' lostspace bridge technology, fashioning hundreds of pillars that would form a bridge large enough to teleport Cybertron itself across the cosmosDark of the MoonDark of the Moon #3 Sentinel then invented a mysterious "torch" that he promised would end the war.Foundation #3 The torch had to be brought into contact with the AllSpark to be activated, so the Autobots launched an attack on the Simfur temple to carry out this action while Sentinel stood by with a spacecraft, theArk, to await delivery of the active torch.Elita One soon returned with the torch, at which point Sentinel instructed Wheeljack to take thesecond Ark and collect the remaining Autobots fromTyger Pax, while he himself headed to Simfur to collect Optimus's forces. Upon arrival at Simfur, however, Sentinel's Ark was attacked byStarscream, and was consumed by a huge explosion, leaving all present to believe it, Sentinel, and all aboard had been destroyed.Foundation #4

In actuality, Sentinel's Ark had not been vaporized as believed: it had been teleported away by thespace bridge technology it was outfitted with. With all hands knocked into stasis by the explosion, the ship automatically jinked through space and time on a series of random space bridge jumps, until at last, its sensors locked on to the energy of the AllSpark, which had since been ejected from Cybertron and had crash-landed on the planetEarth. On its penultimate jump, the Ark crossed paths with the Decepticon shipNemesis, which had departed Cybertron just as the war was beginning, and was now also following the AllSpark's trail. The Ark materialized from its jump into the same physical space as theNemesis, crippling both ships beyond repair; the Ark made one final bridge jump, reappearing in the immediate vicinity of Earth in 1962, where it crashed violently onto Earth'sMoon. All the Autobots aboard perished save for Sentinel himself, who was in the crash vault and remained slumbering in stasis.Convergence chapter 1

With the aid of collaborationist humans, Megatron used space bridge technology to bring Cybertron to Earth orbit, and underDylan Gould's leadership, humans were put to work strip-mining Earth for resources to rebuild Cybertron.

All of this changed whenLockdown arrived. The bounty hunter demanded that Optimus be handed over to him. Megatron and Sentinel both refused, the former out of pride and the latter out of loyalty. Lockdown then offered a protomatterseed to Sentinel in exchange for Optimus. While Sentinel was sorely tempted, Optimus used the opportunity to reignite Sentinel's sense of justice. Sentinel proceeded to pretend to hand over Optimus, ambush and defeat Lockdown, and capture Lockdown'sship. Sentinel Prime was released as part of the firstwave ofDark of the MoonCyberverse Commander Class toys. He transforms from a Rosenbauer Panther 6x6 airport fire truck to robot and back. He comes with his sword and shield, both of which he can wield in either hand. The sword stores underneath his vehicle mode, whereas the shield folds in half and becomes part of the fire truck roof (including the boom arm). Because the boom arm has a grip at the middle that allows Sentinel to hold it in shield mode, the grip can be used as aC joint bar in vehicle mode.

Because of clearance issues, bringing and folding his arms to his back for vehicle mode can be rather difficult. The shoulders are more likely to pop off the plastic swivels they're on. And due to the wheels on the waist, his thigh articulation is limited.

On some (early?) releases, the Rosenbauer logo on the right side of the truck is reversed.

Released in the third wave ofDark of the Moon Voyager Class toys, Sentinel Prime converts from a licensed Rosenbauer Panther 6x6 airport fire truck to robot and back. He features an itty-bitty flip out nozzle on his front. His rotating and extendingMechTech Boom Lift (which looks like a giant cannon due to thepeg at the tip) becomes a Fusion Cannon when a large button is pushed, but only if the button (which is rotatable) has its underside tabs aligned with its respective sockets on the weapon housing. The weapon can be locked in this mode if the button is rotated while pressed. The weapon itself features a MechTech port on each side panel, with the aforementioned peg at the tip of the Boom Lift.

While his firetruck roofkibble is intentionally used as a cape/wings, he's still a pretty significantshellformer, flopping nearly his entire firetruck side panels and front (along with his roof) onto his back, with only his wheels, leg panels, and feet being integrated in any way with his vehicle mode.

Like the Cyberverse Dark Sentinel Prime, this figure's Autobot symbols are deliberately scratched out. However, his box bio remains coy about his true nature.

As with all Japanese Dark of the Moon releases, Sentinel Prime (named Cannon Sentinel Prime) comes packed with a character card and an accompanying transparent plastic card of his new rifle in its combined mode for the MechTech Wars online game. The toy was originally solicited as "New Sentinel Prime"

His vehicle stock photos are mistransformed, with the back panels covering the rear wheels and the roof rack folded down instead of up.

MechTech Leader Class Sentinel Prime converts from a Rosenbauer Panther 6x6 airport fire truck to robot and back! In vehicle mode, he features a rotating, extending firefighting boom arm, a small flip-up nozzle on the front fender, and siren lights and sounds, activated by a small grey button on the roof of the cabin. There are two5 mm post hole MechTech ports in this mode; the one on the right hand side of the vehicle has a button inside, that when pushed in (by plugging in a MechTech weapon), activates a weapon deploying sound effect. Pressing the cabin roof button in this mode activates a weapon firing sound. Removing the MechTech weapon activates thetransformation sound effect.

AStealth Force-style attack vehicle mode can be formed by opening panels on the rearward sides of the vehicle to expose hidden weapons (that look like missiles) and two more MechTech ports, activating the MechTech Shield's Bladed Blaster mode (by pressing the large button on it marked by theCyberglyphics) and attaching that to the vehicle MechTech ports, and clipping the Primax Blade's handle into the two tabs on top of the Shield/Bladed Blaster's turret. In a reversal of his Cyberverse toy, Sentinel's double-bladed Primax Blade folds in half and stores underneath the grey panels forming the roof of much of the vehicle, while the MechTech shield is stored under the truck.

In robot mode, when the button on Sentinel Prime's chest is pushed, his eyes light up, his chin moves and he says "I am Sentinel Prime!" Two more phrases, "Good to see you alive, Optimus." and "What has happened to theAllSpark?" are heard when a weapon is inserted into the MechTech port with the button inside of it and the chest button pushed. Unfortunately, international releases of the toy only say the cut-down phrase "Sentinel Prime" (replacing the extra phrases with an electronic pulsing noise and another transformation sound effect) due to the need for the figure to be released in non-English-speaking markets. The siren lights and sounds can still be activated by pressing the grey button back and to the left of Sentinel Prime's head.

In this mode, Sentinel has four more 5mm MechTech ports: one each on either shoulder and one each on either forearm. If that's still not enough, the screw holes under his wrists can accommodate 5mm weapons as well, for a total of eight weapons beyond those included with the figure. The Primax Blade and Shield can both be held via their respective handles in either of Sentinel's articulated hands; the shield can also be plugged into the MechTech port in Sentinel's forearms. While (possibly) unintended, one of his sword’s blades can be popped off to simulate the Primax blade’s one-sided form seen in the movie.

The red detailing on the shield as seen in the stock photography is not present on the final product.

The Japanese release comes packed with a character card and an accompanying transparent plastic card of his MechTech weapon for the MechTech Wars online game.

Sentinel is part of the firstwave ofKre-O sets and can be built in either robot orDark of the Moon inspired fire truck mode. A Kreon can fit in his cab.

Like many other Kre-O sets, the stock photography features robot construction that differs from the final product. Sentinel Prime's shoulders, feet, and legs are a bit different than on the actual toy. The stock photography actually shows a robot mode that is more similar to his appearance in Dark of the Moon; specifically the shielded shoulders and pointed feet.

Sentinel Prime's head shape is based onAnimatedSentinel Prime. The design of the Sentinel Prime Kreon is inspired byIDW (2005) Sentinel Prime's appearance in theMegatron Origin comic series, and his helmet is based on (and was later used for) Generation 1Inferno.

"Galvatron Factory Battle" is based onKSI's factory complex, and one component of the playset build incorporates Sentinel Prime's severed head in a clear jar. He does not sport a helmet, likely due to the small size of the jar.

Part of the first wave ofBot Shots, Sentinel Prime is a teeny little fire truck with a spring-loaded automatic transformation to robot mode triggered when his front bumper is pressed. He has a "spinner" in his chest that shows his three attack types and power levels. He is heavily based on the live-action movie sentinel Prime, with his head based on the above SentinelKre-O figure (which is in turn inspired byAnimatedSentinel Prime's head).

As this "Super Bot" of this wave, Sentinel is mostly unpainted clear-plastic, has different power ratings (Including a much higher "Fist" score) than his (later) normal release, and isshortpacked to boot.

This mold was also used to makeBot ShotsProtectobot Hot Spot and the main body forBeCoolGanoh.

BeCool "Firetruck" is a redeco of Sentinel Prime very similar to hisBot Shots three-pack toy, but with a completely red back/roof section. He also features metallic blue paint on his windshield and chest details as well as orange-painted lightbars, and instead of power levels his stickers display pictures of a fireman's uniform, a water hose and an eeevil ball of flame.

Studio Series Sentinel Prime is a Voyager Class mold accurate to his appearance inDark of the Moon, transforming to a licensed Second generation Rosenbauer Panther 6X6 in 32 steps. He comes with a newPrimax Blade accessory that splits in two for transformation and a cardboard backdrop display depicting a war-torn Chicago. His Primax Blade must be separated so that each end can be plugged into both sides of Sentinel's hand. However, unlike previous figures of the character, he does not come with a shield. His firehose can be detached and has a (short) 5mm peg, which can make it a makeshift weapon, albeit with a loose fit. However, the strut that the hose attaches to and the hose itself are made of flexible plastic that does not like to detach easily and can result in stretching that either leave stress marks, or worse, make the joint not clip together firmly anymore.

Though more of a coincidence, the tab on Sentinel's left forearm can attach with the rectangular hole behind theMechtech Leader Class' shield.

An alternate configuration from his instructions has hiskibble roll up into a bundle behind his butt, freeing up his waist articulation. However, this configuration makes his cape floppy, as it has no place to tab into his back. This alternate configuration also happens to be the way Sentinel is packaged. It would seem that both orientations were intended as there are tabs and slots allocated to both configurations that would otherwise get unused depending on which option the user chooses. Whether there was any other planned usage for the second configuration, beyond the way he is packed, is unknown.

As a nod to his betrayal in the film, this is the first toy of Sentinel Prime to be explicitly classified as a Decepticon. While the front and back of the box features a Decepticon insignia, his instruction sheet features an Autobot one and uses Autobot-themed red. The figure itself lacks any faction symbols.

Prime 1 StudioMuseum Masterline Sentinel Prime is a huge non-transforming sculpture. The statue is made of polystone along with other materials and features LED lights on his eyes and base.

He comes with the Primax Blade attached to his right hand and his shield attached to his left arm. The exclusive version also comes with an interchangable right arm holding the Cosmic Rust Blaster and aControl Pillar that can be displayed separately.

The standard version is limited to 200 pieces while the exclusive version is limited to 250 pieces.

• In an early draft ofTransformers, time stops asSam Witwicky falls down the buildingMegatron smashed, and Sentinel appears to him via theAllSpark. Sentinel would've clarified the history of the war and the relationship between Optimus and Megatron (expanding on their history as siblings) and given him a clue to defeating Megatron with the Cube.^[3]
• An early working name for Sentinel Prime forDark of the Moon wasUltra Magnus.^[4][5]
• In the debut trailer for the filmDark of the Moon, Sentinel Prime is seen in a gold and silver color scheme. This shot was redone for the movie proper, and he consistently appears red throughout the film, though the uncorrected trailer footage was still used for the menu on the home video release of the film.
• The Rosenbauer Panther fire truck cast as Sentinel Prime was entirely repainted specifically for the film, at a cost of thousands of dollars; real-world aircraft fire-fighting vehicles are required by FAA regulations to have a much lighter color scheme.^[6] It was repainted and given to a different airport, where it remained active.
