Whether by choice or as a practical consequence of the sheer breadth of modernGenerations product, he seemingly utilized a more horizontal command structure than past department heads, taking point on the primarylive-action film series component of theStudio Series line and largely leaving the more traditionalGeneration 1 flavored fare to Associate DesignerEvan Brooks and overallGenerations design leadMark Maher. Smith's status as the resident gearhead of the design team may or may not constitute an ulterior motive for this particular division of labor. BeforeTransformers he worked onStar Wars.

In March 2022, Smith began his "From Screen to Toy" posts on hisInstagram page, showcasing digital renders and development notes on his recent and upcomingStudio Series figures, later showcasing his works from other lines as well.
