Reflector (akaRefraktor) likes to watch. He lives (they live?) to observe anything and everything, from scenery, to wildlife, to architecture. But above all else, Reflector likes to watch his (their?) comrades, learn their dark secrets, and profit from them. Reflector is also very impressed with his (their) own abilities both in the fields of observation and blackmail.

Reflector is generally composed of three separate robots—Spectro,Spyglass, andViewfinder—who combine into the one single-lens-reflex cameraaltmode that is Reflector. He is (they are?) also the leader (leaders?) of thePhotons.

Reflector was among the warriors who accompaniedMegatron aboard the Decepticons'space cruiser during its assault on theAutobots'Ark four million years ago. When the Ark crashed onEarth, Reflector was entombed in stasis with the other Transformers and awoke with the other Decepticons in1984. Withdrawing from the Ark, the Decepticons immediately set about constructing a temporary base for themselves, and Reflector andThundercracker were assigned to patrol the perimeter. As they surveyed the desert landscape, Reflector expressed his disbelief that the Autobots had also survived the crash. Thundercracker then spotted something off in the distance, and Reflector transformed to camera mode so that Thundercracker could use him to zoom in on the mystery object. Reflector dispensed a Polaroid photograph of the truck that had caught their attention, and Thundercracker reported the intruder to Megatron as a possible Autobot (which it wasn't).More than Meets the Eye, Part 1

Reflector later battled the Autobot forces on an offshore oil rig,More than Meets the Eye, Part 1 and joined in the Decepticons' attack onSherman Dam.More than Meets the Eye, Part 2 Reflector participated in the battle royale with the Autobots shortly before the Decepticons' failed attempt at returning toCybertron aboard a new space cruiser.More than Meets the Eye, Part 3 Numerousrobots sharing Reflector's design, who existed in addition to the core trio, also took part in these activities.More than Meets the Eye, Part 2

While the Decepticons were in the midst of testing their new intergalactic "space bridge" transport system, Reflector took part in two battles with the Autobots when the heroic robots tried to interfere with the test run. The battle ended badly when Megatron was sucked through the space bridge and back to Cybertron,Transport to Oblivion but Reflector seemed unfazed by the apparent loss of his leader, as he went on to carry out orders that had previously been given to him and began staking out the laboratory ofantimatter researcherDoctor Alcazar. Using his photographic abilities to obtain the entry code for the laboratory's security system in secret, Reflector concluded his stakeout just as Megatron returned to Earth, and he quickly reported his findings to the Decepticon leader. Reflector subsequently followed Megatron back to the lab and entered the entry code for him, allowing the villains to enter the complex stealthily. Reflector was no doubt rather cheesed off to learn that his spying had been for naught when it turned out that Alcazar had gotten rid of the antimatter formula by transmitting it toChip Chase. When the Decepticons acquired the formula from Chip, Reflector helped chargeenergon cubes with the antimatter they created, and then participated in the subsequent battle with the Autobots, which ended when the antimatter cubes Megatron was using to power himself threatened to overload.Roll for It

Reflector later worked withStarscream andRumble on another attempt to transport energon cubes to Cybertron via the space bridge. A group of Autobots soon arrived to investigate the Decepticon goings-on, but Reflector was quick to act and dazzled them with a blinding flash from his central lens. The Autobots soon got themselves together, though, and Reflector was dispatched when his duplicates were hurled into one another, causing them to recombine into one. Reflector's component selves later took part in a Decepticon attack onAutobot Headquarters and were fired upon bySpike Witwicky, but the three robots were confident that the Earth germ couldn't hit all of them at once.Divide and Conquer

Reflector did most of the grunt work when the Decepticons sought to drain the energy of theEarth's core via a crystal shaft in the Arctic, operating machinery and gathering energon cubes. When their digging unearthed the frozen AutobotSkyfire, Reflector tried attacking the towering robot by running at him in a sort of cheerleader-pyramid formation, only to be—unsurprisingly—knocked to the ground with a swipe of Skyfire's arm.Fire in the Sky

Along withSoundwave andLaserbeak, Reflector gathered valuable intelligence on theGreat Falls hydroelectric power station, and he took part in the attack that their information-gathering helped facilitate.S.O.S. During the combat, Megatron employed Reflector's power to generate a brilliant flash of light to blind Optimus Prime. The Battle of the Star Gate

The Reflector trio were amongst the Decepticons who attacked theTrigger as it neared completion. They took it over easily, thanks in part to the human collaborator,Trov. One human,Makoto, had been overlooked by the Decepticons however, and managed to pin down Reflector and the rest of the group under Megatron's command in theTrigger's rail room with a powerful electromagnetic field. Reflector was almost sent hurdling to the farthest side of the galaxy by theTrigger, but a blast from Megatron's fusion cannon disabled the portal. The Decepticons constructed a new weapon to pursue their energy-plundering campaign on Earth, theOmega Wave Cannon. Reflector and Shockwave were charged with manning the device's control as other teams of the Decepticons would go out and attack power plants to retrieve the energy stored within them. The whole plot was foiled whenJenny, a captive of the Decepticons, managed to reprogram Starscream into blowing up the Omega Wave Cannon's controls. Reflector was sent tumbling away from his post. He then followed Megatron into battle, but was forced to flee along with the rest of the Decepticons when a massive amount of Autobot reinforcements joined the fray.Full Throttle Scramble Power!

The Reflector trio were "one" of fourteenWarlords that arose championing the Decepticon cause. His / their legion, thePhotons, were an endless series of identical Cybertronians apparently patterned after their leader. As theAutobot Elite Guard began picking off the Decepticon Warlords one at a time, Reflector attended the War Councils with the other Decepticon leaders to discuss strategy. It was Reflector who suggested they pool secrets and information for the greater good of the Decepticon cause. It was also Reflector who assimilated his / their Photons into the ranks ofMegatron's Decepticons after the Warlords gave up their secrets to each other. Reflector was part of Megatron's crew, active on Earth in the 1980s before theArk II incident. When Megatron was snatched up by the Keepers, not all Decepticons fell into line under Starscream's maniacal command.Skywarp and the three Reflector robots chose to make a stand against Starscream's leadership atHoover Dam, outside the Decepticon's new base inLas Vegas. Spyglass and Skywarp drewSoundwave's electronic attention, prompting Starscream and his communications officer to make an appearance at the Dam. As Skywarp rejected Starscream's rule, the other Reflector robots leapt out of hiding to attack the usurper. The battle quickly turned against Skywarp and Reflector, though, as Soundwave's sonic attack ripped Spectro apart, sending him over the edge of the dam and into stasis lock. Once Skywarp was disabled as well, Spyglass and Viewfinder wisely chose to abdicate to Starscream.Hardwired

Viewfinder was killed in the crash when a large piece of the bridge's shattered canopy impaled through his chest. Spectro and Spyglass survived and eventually they locatedWheelie, who had previously crashed on the same planet and had been building an escape vessel with afriendly alien. They managed to hijack the vessel shortly before it launched by threatening to kill Wheelie's friend, but the tiny Autobot removed the safety catch from his energon converter before disembarking, causing it to explode violently shortly after takeoff, killing the last two fragments of Reflector's being.Spotlight: Wheelie

Three Reflector units hailing from an unknownuniversal stream were among the minions serving underMegatron during his complicated, cross-dimensional war with the AutobotAlternity. This incarnation of Reflector was aPretender, with each of his components able to disguise itself as an ordinary-sized human being.

Reflector was dispatched touniversal stream 905.0 Beta to search for the source of a new dimensional flux of previously unheard type. In their Pretender guises, the trio tracked the source of the disruption to theOtsuka Museum of Art, and found that it was a strange tablet. Reflector was about to make off with the tablet when he was accosted byBumblebee andElita Seven, and his components promptly dropped their Pretender forms to battle the little Autobot. Unfortunately for Reflector, he was no match for the unearthly powers of an Alternity: Bumblebee snatched the tablet away, and with a snap of his fingers, reduced Reflector to a nearly two-dimensional state. From across the dimensions, Megatron saw his minions collapse like paper, and lashed out with his tesseractal swords, destroying the museum and the tablet, and wounding Bumblebee. Refraktor was on patrol withGutcruncher andAirwave when they decided to harassRatchet's clinic and intimidate the medics who worked there into surrendering any Autobot sympathizers. However, Ratchet was less compliant than they'd hoped andHoist eventually scared them into leaving when he threatened to turn a swarm ofdiagnostic drones upon the three.Escape Part One

Refraktor also joined the Decepticon Guard in driving Security Operations away from one of their holding cells and freed some useful prisoners. During the operation, however, Refraktor cornered a member of Sec-Ops namedVibes. At Starscream's direction, he slipped Vibes a tip aboutPerceptor andTitansparks. Starscream had been forced to share some of his cards with Megatron and Starscream, so he wanted Optimus Prime to have some of the same intelligence to keep himself potentially useful. While the injured Starscream underwent repairs, Refraktor reported on his successful mission, but warned Starscream that his loyalty would only stretch so far, especially as Megatron seemed to be winning. Incidentally, Refraktor was targeted bySwindle as a potential source of information as well. The enterprising casino owner tagged Refraktor as a favored patron, one who might get more talkative after some specially-refined energon. Viewfinder had absorbed most of the damage from the blast, and the other two set up a shielding unit to protect them while they complete repairs. Megatron reminded them of their mission, and Brake-Neck reminded them of Smokescreen. They naively thought they could be three less targets by transforming into camera mode.Battle Hardened

Reflector soon informed Megatron they were back to being 100% operational and going to make a move to recover the Nova Core. As the battle was taking place, they were spotted by Smokescreen. Reflector asked Brake-Neck fpr cover fire, but he refused and told Spyglass it was stupid of them to be in an open field in the first place. Then Viewfinder was hit by a sniper bullet as they ran and cranked up their shields.

AsFirst Aid headed to an extraction site where his Medi-bots would meet him, Brake-Neck was compromised by Smokescreen, and Reflector stole the Core and tried to take off with it. First Aid intervened, and... unexpectedly, Spectro dropped the Nova Core into water, of all things. The Core went critical, and First Aid convinced Reflector to help him shield the energy as the Nova Core went into meltdown. The Nova Core faded, and Viewfinder only asked that the Autobot not tell Megatron about what just happened. Then Viewfinder got hit by Brake-Neck's bullet, much to his irritation Big Bang!

When Reflector came through the Spacebridge, Shockwave thought it was malfunctioning, seeing as it had multiple lifeforms coming through at once. After they made their entrance, Starscream warned Shockwave about their meddlesome nature, to which Shockwave replied that the four of them would get along well together.

While Swindle was having a sale with Luca, Reflector eavesdropped on the two, and learnt Luca had a "plan" for Starscream involving a box. Naturally, Reflector went to tattle on Starscream about the ploy. Starscream destroyed the box, much to Swindle's chagrin. Apparently it wasn't a trap, but in fact a gift for Starscream's Inception Day! - Cybertron-21, a high-fidelity holographic battlefield simulator. Starscream was shocked he had just destroyed a game (in mint condition). Reflector thought that it was a bad call to have done that, and they decide to go back to blackmailing people.Transformers: Earth Wars

Reflector is composed of three distinct robots that combine to form a camera that most closely resembles a 1969 Ricoh 126C-Flex TLS:Viewfinder as the central component with the lens,Spectro as the right-side component with the shutter button, andSpyglass as the left-side component with the flashcube. It actually has play functions that simulate an actual camera: the viewfinder actually works (though one needs to stand about 8' back to see anything clearly), and the shutter button clicks when pressed in.

Reflector was first sold in Japan in 1985 as an ordinary retail item. WhileHasbro originally planned him for release in 1984 (thus him appearing in the cartoon), they delayed selling him in the U.S. until 1986, and only then via mail-order from adirect-mail flyer promotingThe Transformers: The Movie. (Amusingly, this came just as the character was being quietly and fully phased out of the fiction.) The toy would be a common offering inpack-in flyers from then on, at a cost of $10 and twoRobot Points. Naturally, the Hasbro version has the flashcube missile launcher's spring removed, while the Takara version has it at regular missile-launching strength. Oddly, the Decepticoninsignia decals on Spyglass and Spectro are inverted from the norm, being silver symbols with purple outlines, something not seen elsewhere in the first two years of G1 figures.

This figure would have been apretool/redeco ofReveal the Shield Deluxe ClassPerceptor, utilizing that toy's alternate head sculpt based on Perceptor's original 1985 toy's head (which does bear a passing resemblance to Viewfinder). It was inteded to be released as part of aToys"R"Usexclusive two-pack withSideswipe, a redeco ofUniverseSideswipe in Sideswipe'sGeneration 2 colors. The head sculpt intended for Reflector was first acknowledged by Hasbro at theBotCon 2010 design panel,^[2] and was later used by TakaraTomy for thee-HOBBY exclusiveGenerationsMagnificus figure. The intended deco sheets for the two figures were revealed by the unofficialPete's Robot Convention on Facebook in 2020, but later taken down again at the request of Hasbro.

Part of the sixth wave of 2012-onwardsGenerations Legends Class toys,Thrilling 30 "Skrapnel" comes with Reflector, a smaller robot based onViewfinder'spackage art. Reflector can transform into a camera or a weapon modeled after Shrapnel's grenade launcher, both of which Skrapnel can wield via its5 mm post, or mount onto Skrapnel's back in insect mode. The only way Reflector's camera mode can be held right-side-up is loosely by the unfolded robot arms–the 5mm post is ontop of the camera, and is sculpted to resemble a camera's flashcube.

Stock photography of Reflector depicts him with hisarms swapped, and therefore facing backwards. This mold was redecoed intoSpy-Eye forBotCon 2015.

Released as aBotCon 2016 souvenir exclusive,Combiner Wars Reflector (Spectro, Spyglass, and Viewfinder) is a three-pack of a singular redeco and retool ofCombiner WarsShockwave, utilizing the mold's existing alternate head. Reflector transforms into a spaceship based on Shockwave's Cybertronian handgun mode. Undocumented in the instructions, Reflector can transform into a gun mode for anyCombiner Wars gestalt.

Hasbro has encouraged finding ways to combine the three into a vaguely camera-shaped object, and as such there are multipleunofficial attempts.

SiegeRefraktor (thanks,trademark!) is a single-packaged Deluxe figure based onViewfinder's robot design, although the figure includes a removable 'chest module' which allows one to recreateSpectro orSpyglass instead.^[3] As standalone robots, each Refraktor bot on its own can transform into an "artillery hovercraft"^[3] that might begenerously interpreted as marginally reminiscent of the BotCon 2016 redecoes above. Purchasing three units and combining them allows the formation of the classic camera mode, looking vaguely like a modern digital reflex body. To this end, each Refraktor includes a blaster and a shield which form one-third of the camera tripod and lens, respectively, with the Viewfinder "chest module" connecting the tripod for stability. Though not suggested in the instructions, you can also pop the other two chest modules into the empty sockets on top of each of the camera's sides, simulating the aperture and shutter speed controls on a real camera. Unlike mostSiege figures, the Refraktors lack battle damage. Unfortunately, this figuresuffers from a citogenerated red wrist stripe which was not actually there in the original cartoon.

Inputting the blacklight code "Reflector" into the Teletraan-1 page on Hasbro's website reveals a desktop wallpaper containing a preview of the Refraktor Reconnaissance Team, notably before the official reveal atSan Diego Comic-Con.

Due to the need for three Refraktors to make a camera, Hasbro wholesalers allowed independent retailers to order entire cases composed solely of them, outside the normal waves and case assortments offered to big-box retailers. As of 2019 this is not unusual and most figures are available this way.

This mold was later redecoed to makeWar for Cybertron TrilogyScrapface, as well as retooled intoComic EditionEmirate Xaaron. It also serves as the basis for the non-toy characterShamble as well asShattered GlassReflector's appearance in IDW'sShattered Glass comic.

One of many manymany online exclusives revealed and opened for pre-order duringSan Diego Comic-Con 2019, this set features three copies of the Deluxe figure above, only this time decoed to match the original Reflector toy layouts (mostly). Each robot also comes with extra accessories to make the combined camera mode look that much more like an actual modern-ish camera while still evoking the original toy, adding a flashcube for Spyglass, a grip/shutter-button for Spectro, and a viewfinder for Viewfinder.

The set also includes aKremzeek figurine, which is compatible with theSiege "blast effect" system. Neat!

This set was originally intended to be aHasCon 2019 exclusive, but that event was indefinitely postponed.^[4]

Part of the first assortment of toys promoting theNetflixWar for Cybertron Trilogy cartoon,Scrapface is a blue-and-red redeco ofSiegeRefraktor, transforming into a Cybertronian "artillery hovercraft. Scrapface is molded almost entirely in shades of grey plastic with his splashes of colour being an extensive paint wash; this gives him the appearance of being covered in accumulated grime and battle scars.

As with any version of this mold, Scrapface can also transform into one third of a camera, allowing buyers to combine three units into Reflector's classic camera mode (good luck with getting three, though!). The shield becomes one third of a telephoto lens, while his blaster becomes one third of a tripod.

The military insignia on Scrapface's box has him as a Ground Division Infantry Private, while his instructions place him in the Espionage unit like his Refraktor mold-mates. Given a similar copy/paste error in the concurrent Voyager ClassHotlink's instructions, the box probably has it right.

This toy, like all of the NetflixWar For Cybertron Trilogy toys, was aWalmart exclusive in the U.S. and Canada, and aTakaraTomy Mall exclusive in Japan.

• Deluxe Centurion Drone (Deluxe Class with accessories pack,2020)

A small, non-transforming accessory of Refraktor in camera mode is included as part of theWar for Cybertron TrilogyDeluxe Centurion Drone Weaponizer Pack. Refraktor is scaled so it may be paired with its Deluxe and Voyager contemporaries, though the handle placement makes it basically impossible for toys without swivel wrists to "use" it correctly, and even those with swivel wrists might have a hard time getting it to face level. Oh well!

Unlike fellow accessory-botsMegatron andSoundwave, Refraktor is completely unpainted. Also, Refraktor is curiously based on the originalMicro Change-mold toy, rather than eitherSiege iterationor the original cartoon model, the latter slightly odd given the original-cartoon-centric theme of the accessory pack.

An exclusive toTakaraTomy Mall,Canon/Transformers Refraktor is a roughly Leader Class-sized figure that transforms into a fully licensed Canon EOS R5 digital camera. The toy is 80% the size of the genuine article and features a removable lens attachment, though it must be reattached to him before he can transform to robot mode since it forms his head and arms. The lens cap is removable and is used as a shield in robot mode. His included "Quantum Dial" accessory can be pegged onto his lens, just behind the front element. He also comes with a small version of his alternate mode from the originalTransformers cartoon, which can split into three pieces, in homage to the original Reflector toy. As a bit of an easter egg and likely a nod to the original Reflector having three components, Refraktor has three very small "lenses" sculpted into his forehead, though they are almost entirely concealed by his helmet. The head must be unscrewed and the face removed (which can be quite difficult) to reveal them.

Both his Quantum Dial and small camera accessory can be pegged into his palms. His hands feature a range of movement, with the thumb and index finger being articulated and the remaining fingers joined together.

This mold was also used to make the concurrently releasedCanon/TransformersOptimus Prime R5 and the subsequentNemesis Prime R5 retool.

A small soft-rubber figurine of Reflector (known as akeshigomu in Japan) was released as part ofKabaya'sTransformers Milk Caramel line ofcandy toys. Based specifically on the Viewfinder toy, the figure was available in multiple colors and came packaged with a piece of chocolate-covered caramel.

Reflector was among the largerkeshigomu developed by Takara, molded from soft purple rubber and initially sold in a multi-pack with twenty-one other Decepticon figurines. The figure, based on Reflector's animation model (unlike the earlierCaramel figure), features a number etched into its back which is the sum total of Reflector'sTech Spec ratings, for use in the various simple games that could be played with the figures. Reflector was later available in a peach coloration as part of various other multi-packs.

Like all Decepticons Decoys, he was a randomly-chosen pack-in available with the cardedThrottlebots,Stunticons,Combaticons andTerrorcons, and was, very early on in the promotion, available in an alternate red coloration that was only packed in with the Throttlebots. • Reflector (2022)

Released in the fifth wave ofSuper7's line of multi-property 3.75-inch "retro" action figures,ReAction Reflector is a non-converting 3 3/4-inch action figure based on his appearance in the original cartoon, with 5 points of articulation (swivel neck, shoulders, hips) and holes in his feet for use with some variety of stand. Unlike the various other accessory-less figures in theReAction line, both of Reflector's hands are open to hold accessories he doesn't have.

As with all releases in theReAction toyline, Reflector comes packaged on a small cardback that emulates the nostalgic packaging style ofKenner'sStar Wars action figures from the late 1970s to early '80s.

• Reflector was originally the "Camera Robo" from Takara'sMicro Change sub-series of theNew Microman line. The only noteworthy difference between the two releases, besides the whole missile-launcher-neuter-in-the-United-States thing, is that theMicroman release has "MICROX" emblazoned on the center unit's decals instead of "REFLECTOR".
• Not so surprisingly, the Camera Robo was first designed as a single unit. Apparently, the primary designer of the final toy, and possibly this initial design, was mecha designerShinji Aramaki, who designed the robots forMegazone 23 andGenesis Climber Mospeada.
• Reflector's role early in the cartoon makes it seem likely his toy was originally planned for inclusion in the initial 1984 line, a theory supported by the inclusion of a Hasbro product code consistent with the other 1984 toys inTeletraan I's files on the Decepticons in "Heavy Metal War". Why Hasbro decided not to release it so late in the game is unknown, as is the reason they later reversed that decision to make it a viable mail-away. In accordance with Hasbro's decision not to release the figure, theseries story bible specifically discouraged writers from use of the character after season one ended.^[5] Indeed, following "City of Steel", Reflector is never called for by an episode script again, and appears only in group shots of the Decepticons at the animators' discretion.
• At the script stage, Reflector was intended to be a singular robot who possessed the ability to split into three duplicates, identical save for the lens aperture in the chest of the robot who forms the center of their camera mode, who all act with the same mind and talk in unison, with the same voice. This ability was never shown on-screen, having apparently been consciously erased from the series: it was displayed in deleted scenes from "Divide and Conquer", "S.O.S. Dinobots", and "War of the Dinobots". However, "Divide and Conquer"did show the three robotsre-combining, as the three components collide with one another and disappear until only one is left. Reflector was usually just seen in his triplicate state most of the time, but on rare occasions, he would appear as a single robot. His character model was alsosometimes used forgeneric Decepticon troops.
• In the Japanese dub ofThe Transformers cartoon, and in true anime fashion, Reflector announces the name of his special attack every time he uses it: "Flash Beam!"
• Amusingly, the mailaway flyer for Reflector's original toy advertised it as coming with a "flashcube andlaser sheet", presumably due to someone in marketing misreading theinstructions' "flashcube andlabel sheet".
