When me Grimlock go clubbin', me make sure to pack extra mace just in case.

As king of theDinobots,Grimlock believes that the best approach to a problem is to smash it first, worry about the specifics later. One of the most powerful warriors in the universe, he likes nothing more than showing off his strength, leaving his enemies stomped, chomped, or turned to ash by a blast of his fire breath. This rather rough n' tough attitude extends to hisAutobotcompanions, who are expected to meet Grimlock's standard of strength. That said, the Autobots have a lot less to fear from this behemoth than theDecepticons.[1]

Not a samurai's precision, but you get the job done.

King Shark knows how you feel after being in Arkham Asylum.

Grimlock was a prisoner aboardLockdown'sship until the Autobots detached that section and flew it toChina, though Optimus did not inform his troops of their presence. WhenGalvatron'snew Decepticons shot down their ship, Optimus went to recruit the Dinobots for their aid. Optimus was nevertheless amazed that the "legend" existed, and freed Grimlock and his men. Optimus explained to Grimlock that theCreators intended to wipe them all out, and urged them to stand with him, or refuse and die. Grimlock immediately challenged Optimus, but despite his immense size and strength, was bested in combat. Grimlock submitted to Optimus's lead, and allowed the Autobot leader to mount him. Grimlock and Optimus led the Dinobot-Autobot charge intoHong Kong, where Grimlock killed many Decepticons with ease.

Grimlock later helped escort theSeed to a safe location, but Lockdown arrived and turned his tractor beam on them. Grimlock and the Dinobots would have been captured once again had Optimus not destroyed the tractor projector with a well-placed shot. Optimus ordered Grimlock and the others to flee while he fought Lockdown. The group subsequently held the line on a nearby bridge until Optimus,Bumblebee, and their human allies triumphed and killed Lockdown. Optimus granted Grimlock and the Dinobots their freedom, and Grimlock happily departed with his team for parts unknown.Age of Extinction

Grimlock's story.

In the years following the battle in China, Grimlock joined the Autobots in hiding atCade Yeager'sscrapyard. Unfortunately, he developed a habit of stealing thelocal sheriff's cruiser and using it as a chew toy. On the day Cade encountereda dying Cybertronian knight, he returned to find an angry sheriff demanding the return of his vehicle. Grimlock tried to hide the cruiser by eating it but was eventually berated into vomiting it back up. Cade then turned on his assistantJimmy for not keeping Grimlock under control, who pointed out that without Cade the Autobots were uncontrollable and Grimlock had tried to eat him at least once. Grimlock later relaxed in the scrapyard while Cade called his daughterTessa.

The next day, their refuge was discovered by the Decepticons and theT.R.F. forces. As their enemies prepared to invade, Cade and the Autobots escaped to a nearby town to carry out their emergency plan. Grimlock joinedSlug in laying a trap for the pursuing TRF forces, bursting from beneath the road leading to the town and destroying the convoy. Grimlock then made his way to the town in time to save Cade and Izzy fromBarricade, swatting the Decepticon with his tail, before slammingMegatron himself into the ground. AsDreadbot ran in to assist, Grimlock snapped him up and killed the Decepticon bank robber. He then turned his attention back to Megatron andNitro Zeus, who quickly fled once Grimlock unleashed his considerable might upon the Decepticons. Grimlock remained in America after Cade was taken toEngland byCogman and did not participate in the final battle onCybertron. The Last Knight

Grimlock found himself being the guinea pig forOptimus's Dinobot-riding lessons. To his irritation, Optimus rudely beckoned him to move forward, and was thus thrown into a barn. • Grimlock (Flip & Change, 2014)
    • Japanese Name:Big Grimlock
    • Japanese Release Date:2014-07-19
    • Japanese ID number:LA02
Part of the first wave of Flip & Change toys, Grimlock transforms into a robotic hornedTyrannosaurus by way of anautotransformation gimmick, triggered by holding his tail parts and flipping him over and over himself (or spin his tail while he was standing on a flat ground). Grimlock features very limited articulation on the arms, and features 5mm-compatible hands. The toy was inadvertently sold by someWalmarts before the official May 17th street date forAge of Extinction merchandise.
The Japanese release of Grimlock, called "Big Grimlock" to separate it from the One Step Changer, has a primarily silver deco, especially on the dinosaur parts. It also has some other changes like golden teeth and red dino eyes. The Flip and Change construction gimmick is alsoremoved from the release, requiring the toy to be transformed by hand.

  • Grimlock (One Step Changers, 2014)
    • Japanese Release Date:2014-07-19
    • Japanese ID number:LA04
One-Step Changer Grimlock features a one-step autotransformation in both directions from robot to dinosaur, triggered by folding his robot shoulders/dinosaur thighs. His only articulation is the arms, which can move up and down. Grimlock also features a magnet on his right leg, which can accommodate theStomp & Chomp figure (see below). Also, due to the knee spikes on the legs somewhat getting in the way while transforming back toT. rex form, it must be adjusted by hand when converting in mid-transformation.
Like the Flip & Change version, the Japanese release of this toy features more silver than orange.

Me Grimlock take your all your precious money, no matter how silly me look.
  • Electronic Stomp & Chomp Grimlock (One Step Changers, 2014)
    • Accessories: Sword, Optimus Prime mini-figure
Stomp & Chomp Grimlock is a 22" tall figure designed as a centerpiece for the One-Step Changer line, featuring light and sound effects and a one-step autotransformation performed by squeezing and pulling the handle. A One-Step Changer, Power Battler, or the included non-transforming Optimus Prime figure can ride him in dinosaur mode, and the toy is able to detect if said rider is Autobot or Decepticon and change its electronics effects accordingly. His electronics don't turn themselves off, meaning that if you forget, he may start yelling"DESTROY!" at youon his own. Which is very unnerving.
Note that the arms need to be in a straight position before returning toT. rex mode. His left leg is detached to fit in the package.
The toy was redecoed intoanother Grimlock.

  • Grimlock (Legion, 2014)
This vesion of Grimlock is a redeco of thePrime:CyberverseRippersnapper toy, transforming into a bipedal lizard creature. He can also transform into a leg for thePrimeHun-Gurrr mold to use in itscombiner mode, though this is not advertised anywhere for obvious reasons.
This figure was available exclusively atWalmart stores in the United States, at Asda stores in the United Kingdom and at Müller drug stores in Germany.
The stock photo to the left is mistransformed: his torso was supposed to be pushed to the front while in beast mode.

Me Grimlock disapprove of meek scientists who mutate worms.
  • Optimus Prime & Grimlock (Legion two-pack, 2014)
  • Accessories: Sword, pistol
This time, Grimlock is a redeco ofEnergonCruellock (10 years after its release) packaged with a redeco ofRevenge of the Fallen Optimus Prime. He transforms into a dinosaur-monster somewhat reminiscent of the1998 American movie version ofGodzilla and comes with a handgun and a large sword, both of which store in his tail in dino mode. These pieces can combine into a larger weapon that can be used by other Transformers toys. He also comes with an opaque grayEnergon chip which could be attached to mostEnergon-line toys, but unlike every other release of an Energon toy the chip is glued to his body, concealing that the spark crystal is missing from the construction of this toy.
An undocumented feature is the addition of pegs on the insides of the tail halves that correspond with holes in his thighs. The only reasonable explanation for this feature is to give the figure some extra stability in robot mode, so that he doesn't collapse under the weight of the sword. Utilizing this feature does remove all articulation in his legs, however.
This two-pack was available exclusively at Walmart stores in the United States and at Asda stores in the United Kingdom.
This mold was also used to makeDoom-Lock.

  • Grimlock (Voyager, 2014)
    • Series / Number:M4 / #002
    • Japanese ID number:AD03
    • Japanese release date:2014-05-17
    • Accessories: Two-piece spiked maul
Part of the first wave ofAge of Extinction:Generations Voyager Class toys, Grimlock transforms into a silver and bronzeTyrannosaurus witharticulated horns, and a button-activated, spring-loaded chomping jaw. He comes with a spiked maul that he cansorta wield via the smaller5mm handle at the top of its haft. The maul's head and handle are two separate pieces, and the weapon can slide onto to his tail to store in dino mode... as areally long tail extension. Yeah...
There is a bronze paint color variation on the Hasbro release of this figure. The bronze paint can either be colored to match the bronze plastic -or- it can be colored very intensely, appearing oversaturated as more of an "orangey-bronze" color as seen on the Evolution 2-Pack and the Legion two-pack figure. This paint variation can be easily spotted when comparing Grimlock's robot mode hip pieces to each other, seeing the painted sides versus the plastic center and plastic dinosaur arms. Having both the bronze paint and the oversaturated "orangey-bronze" paint versions side-by-side makes the latter one much more noticeable in person.
The TakaraTomy version, part of the first wave of theMovie Advanced Series, lacks the silver paint on his dinosaur head, features additional paint on his robot face and legs, and has red dinosaur eyes.
This toy was later redecoed intoNemesis Grimlock andTransformers (2014) Dinobots Generation One 4-pack Grimlock, and retooled intoPlatinum Edition Dinobots set Grimlock.

  • Grimlock (Leader, 2014)
    • Series / Number:M4 / #002
    • TakaraTomy name:Black Knight Grimlock
    • TakaraTomy ID number:AD20
    • TakaraTomy release date:July 19 2014
    • Accessories: "Dragontooth Mace", shield
Part of the first wave ofAge of Extinction: Generations Leader Class toys, this version of Grimlock transforms into an oddly-elongated,chromed out, black-and-bronzeTyrannosaurus with an articulated jaw, andtiny vestigial arms. A large section of his dino mode rear detaches and splits into two accessories: a spiked mace-like weapon formed out of his rather short, pointy tail, which he can wieldnormally via 5mm post, as well as a spiky, sawbladed shield formed from the dino mode's hip armor, which can slot onto the dino feet on his forearms.
He features chrome on several pegs, tabs, slots, and holes, all of which have a nasty tendency to flake.
All releases ofAge of Extinction Leader-Class Grimlock have very similar looking left & right robot mode feet and thus, are notorious for being incorrectly added to the figure during factory assembly, resulting in a left foot on a right leg, a right foot on a left leg, two left feet, or two right feet. Not having the right foot on the right leg and left foot on the left leg causes him to not stand properly because each foot is designed on the bottom to sit at a specific slanted angle. Both feet look very similar to one another, however they can be identified by finding the corresponding "L" and "R" on each one. If placed on a flat surface to be viewed, one will notice that both feet have subtle slants to their stance. Unfortunately, Leader Grimlock's feet cannot be swapped to correct this issue unless one manages to heat up the rivets holding them in with the tip of a soldering iron and carefully remove them.
This figure was only made available as a storeexclusive in parts of Europe, at least in the United Kingdom (at Argos) and Germany (at Rossmann drug stores).
Hisstock photography features acompletely different deco compared to the final product.
The TakaraTomy version is dubbedBlack Knight Grimlock, and features a morescreen-accurate deco... meaning he's almost entirely silver and grey, but with a bit of bronze. As with the Hasbro release, this Grimlock can also suffer from the incorrectly-assembled feet problem that the original Leader Class figure could have.
In Japan, buying this toy atAEON stores got the customer afreeDinobot Micron Paulie.

This Legion Class Grimlock isonce again, a redeco ofPrimeCyberverseRippersnapper. As a redeco of the said Legion Class figure, he can also transform into a leg for thePrimeHun-Gurrr mold to use in itscombiner mode, though this is not advertised anywhere for obvious reasons.
We can assume that this toy still suffers from mold deterioration afterseven uses. The stock photo to the left is mistransformed: his robot mode head isn't folded away, and his torso was supposed to be pushed to the front while in beast mode.

Optimus Prime and Grimlock also saw release as a Toys"R"Us Japan exclusive, making this "Grimlock" redeco to be first sold at Japanese markets.
We are totally sure that this toy will finally suffer mold deterioration for real aftereight uses.

    • Japanese release date:2018-02-03
This Grimlock is a Voyager-sized Turbo Changer, sharing a similar transformation to his Flip & Change counterpart. Like the rest of the larger Turbo Changers, Grimlock features a "Knight Armor" gimmick. In his case, a spiked crown formed from his robot spine/T. rex tail. However, unlike several Knight Armor Turbo Changers, his gimmick must be manually deployed by hand rather than being spring-loaded.
The TakaraTomy release of the figure features extensive paint applications to resembles his on-screen appearances, and his pop-out mask is now vacuum metallized with some metallic red details.

The mold degradation from thePlatinum Edition Dinobots 5-pack release is still present in this mold.

    • Japanese ID Number:TC-08

    • Hasbro ID number:07
    • TakaraTomy ID number:SS-07
    • TakaraTomy release date:April 28, 2018
    • Accessories: "Hong Kong Pursuit" backdrop
Studio Series Grimlock is a Leader-sized mold that transforms from robot into a dinosaur based onT. rex. Due to a rough robot mode scale being a design intent of the line, Grimlock was the tallest stand-alone figure in the line foreight years—his legs are bent awkwardly in package to allow him to fit and fellow Leader class toyBlackout only comes up to his shoulder! He features patina dry-brushing all over the figure to boost movie-accuracy. His coattails and teeth (on both heads) are made of soft rubber and may be slightly warped in-package. The spike on the front of his helmet and his dinosaur horns are also rubbery, but do not seem to have the same problem of coming out bent. He comes with no accessories but has his flail head molded in place of his right hand. His left hand has a 5mm hole but has trouble holding his Voyager version's mace due to his larger hand. He also comes with a cardboard backdrop display depicting the Hong Kong battle inAge of Extinction.
Due to there being no higher price point in theStudio Series line at the time of Grimlock's release, he ends up being much smaller than what is depicted in the film. An accuratelyscaled Grimlock would be about the size of a Titan Class figure. And wouldn't you know it…

  • Grimlock (Titan Class,2026)
    • Movie:Age of Extinction
    • Accessories: Tail-mace, spike ball
First revealed atSan Diego Comic-Con2025, this iteration of Grimlock is the first Titan-Class figure ofStudio Series, clocking in at 15 inches tall in robot mode (surpassing himself as the tallest stand-alone figure in the line!), large enough for the previously-releasedOptimus Prime and his retoolNemesis Prime to ride in dino mode. There is a peg on Grimlock's dino neck to attach Optimus on. There is a 5mm port in his mouth forFire Blast effects, though he does not come with any.
He comes with his spike ball, which splits in half so it can peg over his hand, similar toLegacyBulkhead, as well as his colossal mace, which transforms via telescoping into his beast mode tail. The shaft of the mace took engineering inspiration from theHasLabOmega Prime'sMatrix Blade, in that there are metal pins inserted into it for added sturdiness.

Me Grimlock no knight! Me '80s toy!
  • Titan's bio for Grimlock says he was given his dino mode "duringShockwave's experiments... which left him low on intellect". DifferentGrimlock there!
  • At approximately 42 meters (140 feet) in length in alternate mode, Grimlock is more than three times as large as a realTyrannosaurus.
  • In the film synopsis inTransformers Annual 2015, Grimlock is called "Warpath" for some reason.
  • The majority of Grimlock'sAge of Extinction toys and merchandise are based on a preliminary robot mode design not used in the final film. This includes his appearance inRise of the Dark Spark and hisThe Last Knight Tiny Turbo Changers and Voyager Class toys. Grimlock's final design sees him redesigned to be more monstrous from the waist up, with some of the knightly aesthetic toned down.
  • One of the last toys longtime Hasbro designerAaron Archer had any input on was the Flip & Change Grimlock toy, as he challenged the team to develop a toy of the character which could transform using that specific motion.[3]
  • Long beforeAge of Extinction was even a thing, at some point after2009, a "movie" version of Grimlock was already conceived for a post-ROTF video game (unrelated to theDark of the Moon franchise) in anticipation thatLuxoflux would continue the series (see the image here on the right). Unfortunately Luxoflux was disbanded in 2010 by their parent companyActivision and said plans never came to fruition.High Moon Studios (which is also a subsidiary of Activision) took on the role instead, leading the development of a third game toan entirely different direction.
