Oh, no room for me in the '80s, but now I'm supposed to come when you call,Simon?!

You can't depend onDoublecross (akaTwinferno[1]), since he is literally of two minds about... well, everything. Each of his beast heads has its own personality and they can't agree on anything. Make a deal or set plans with one hissing half of Doublecross and you'll likely find the other knew nothing about it and refuses to help. And don't think that getting him to transform to robot mode will help, as there's no way of knowing which mind is in control. Just about the only thing they can agree with themselves on is destroyingDecepticons. Thankfully they are, at least, good at that.

Here's the pitch...it's a double play!

Doublecross, along with the other Monsterbots, joinedFortress Maximus on his travels toNebulos in search of peace.Ring of Hate!

The dream of peace proved faulty when the Decepticons followed them there and began taking control of the planet. Along with his fellow Monsterbots and various other Autobots, Doublecross took part in the attempted defense of theMercury Gardens of Melanossus, smashing a Decepticon with a hurled chunk of concrete. As the Decepticon Headmasters unleashed their full firepower, however, Doublecross was of two minds about the situation, with one head saying they must fall back, while the other head demanded that they stay and fight.Grotusque agreed with the first head and ordered a retreat.

A walking session of Congress.

Upon returning to the Autobots' swamp encampment, Doublecross and Grotusque dejectedly reported the outcome of the battle to their fellow Autobots.

Not long afterward, Doublecross's flight abilities proved useful as the Autobots left Nebulos, awkwardly returning to their orbiting ship, theSteelhaven. He may or may not have been carrying a fellow Autobot as a passenger.Brothers in Armor!!

TheSteelhaven made its way to Earth's orbit, and eventually its crew met up with the Ark's. Following a dispute over leadership of the Autobots,Blaster andGrimlock decided to settle their differences in ritual combat on the Earth'smoon, with all other Autobots in attendance being witnesses to the duel. When the Decepticons interrupted the proceedings with a surprise attack, Doublecross participated in the giant Autobot-Decepticon rumble which ensued.Totaled!

Legends comic (1)

The Monsterbots were created byWheeljack in 2011 and programmed with low intelligence to keep them from rampaging like some other beast-type Transformers. Their strange personalities made them unsuitable to be placed on the frontlines, leading to their being stationed on Beast where they were treated as equals by the Beastformers and eventually developed more advanced intelligence. The Road to Legends' Revival Chapter 3

Doublecross and the Monsterbots were sent to the planetBeast, where the Decepticons were enslaving the natives. After they helped free the slaves and the Decepticons were driven away, Rodimus Prime ordered the Monsterbots to stay on Beast just in case the enemy returned. Grotusque and Repugnus said they had nothing against that, while Doublecross just quietly hung out in the background.Rebellion on Planet Beast

Eventually, the Monsterbots were called away from the planet to serve as reinforcements during a battle against the Decepticons on planetParadise. Doublecross literally fought fire with fire as his right head tried to extinguish a burning forest using its flaming breath. The left head chastised him for such stupid thinking before realizing that it didn't have a "water-breath" either, and both opted for stomping the flames out. Shortly afterwards, Doublecross joined up with the other Monsterbots, and together they defeatedAbominus and helped drive the Decepticons off the planet.Head Formation of Friendship

Doublecross later found himself onEarth, separated from the other two Monsterbots. He defended an Autobot energy facility inMiami from a Decepticon attack, and spent most of the time arguing with himself until theHorrorcon duo attacked him.Ultra Magnus Dies!!

Legends comic (2)

The Monsterbots returned to Beast to aid the Beastformers in their war against theLaser Beasts, during which Doublecross set out to recover theThree Wise Ones' gems from the enemy side. While he succeeded, he was attacked byTigerburn who tore his robot mode head off using theStag Hunter.LG51 Doublecross Prologue While his body remained functional, he lost his sense of self and became a mindless puppet used as a weapon by the Laser Beasts. While chasingWhite Leo to theLegends World, Tigerburn brought Doublecross along and modified him to becomeHeadmaster-compatible, allowing the Laser Beast Headmaster to take full control of the Monsterbot's body. Armed with theHaywire Laser, the Tigerburn-Doublecross combination came close to defeating White Leo beforeWhite Lune removed Tigerburn and used the Three Wise Ones' gems to merge White Leo with Doublecross's severed head, turning him into a Headmaster. When White Leo connected to Doublecross's body, his mind was restored and he helped defeat Tigerburn.Bonus Edition Vol. 51

Doublecross and White Leo returned to Beast to lead the revolution against Tigerburn's forces. Repugnus andHedgehog arrived from the Legends World with many more Headmasters and allies as reinforcements. A desperate Tigerburn tried to use the Gems and Battle Bases to regain the advantage. Doublecross combined with White Leo and used White Lune in her Haywire Laser form to beat back the legendary forces. White Leo separated from Doublecross and engaged Tigerburn directly, leading the two of them to impose peace on Beast by crystallizing under the power of the Three Gems. The Road to Legends' Revival Chapter 1

By the year2038, peace still reigned on Beast when Doublecross and the Monsterbots met the refugees from the Legends World there.Legends World in Imminent Danger! Part TwoGalvatron II led an attack on Beast to steal its energy, prompting White Leo to emerge from chrysalis and remerge with Doublecross. Galvatron proved too powerful for the Monsterbots, however, and Doublecross threw White Leo away to save his friend from execution. This prompted a response from theThree Wise Ones, who emerged from their power gems to bless the self-sacrificing attitude of the Monsterbots. The Gem of Fire became a mechanical entity, merging with Doublecross to empower him with Beast Energy. The Road to Legends' Revival Chapter 3

Galvatron was able to temporarily steal the Gem of Fire from Doublecross,Repugnus Chapter but Grotusque got it back and the Decepticons were driven from the planet.Grotusque Chapter

The three Monsterbots andKup constitutedUltra Magnus's team during the search forMetascan Alpha. The group ended up on a desolate moon, confronted byCyclonus and theTerrorcons. Ultra Magnus insisted they ignore the Decepticons and continue with their mission. They flew down to the planet below, only to find it under attack by theDestructons. Doublecross was quickly batted aside byMedusa. The Autobots beat a hasty retreat back to the moon, where the Destructons began beating on the Decepticons. Magnus and Doublecross aided the Decepticons, leading to the forming of a truce between the two factions. The War Against the Destructons, Chapter 1 of 3

In modern times, Doublecross and the other Monsterbots traveled toEarth to bail outGrimlock.Maximum Dinobots #2 Upon arrival, Doublecross slaughteredMachination Headmasters by ripping them in two, incinerating them, and subjecting them to an extremely awful pun.Maximum Dinobots #3

After the initial bout of Headmaster slaughter, the Monsterbots agreed to drop theDynobots off at Machination HQ for a final reckoning. Aboard their ship, Doublecross and Grotusque observed quietly (and slightly menacingly) as Repugnus negotiated a fee with Grimlock. The Monsterbots dropped the Dynobots off at their destination, while taking some anti-air fire. Luckily, the Monsterbots' ship was well-armed and they were able to easily destroy all ground defenses with a blanket dispersal of firepower.Maximum Dinobots #4

Their agreement with the Dynobots called for evac as well, andSlag,Snarl, andSwoop eventually showed up to be pulled out. Repugnus even offered up membership in the Monsterbots to the trio. But the three Dynobots eventually decided that they would stay behind to fight after all. The Monsterbots presumably left the planet shortly thereafter.Maximum Dinobots #5

Two head-hands are better than one!
  • Doublecross (Monsterbot,1987)
Released in the fourth year of the Hasbro USThe Transformers line (third in Europe and Takara'sFight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers line), Monsterbot Doublecross transforms into a two-headed dragon with hints of organic limbs (he's the very first Transformer to have organic-like detailing, in fact). Pressing a lever on his back causes "cold" sparks to shoot from his dragon-mode collarbone and the buzzsaw in his chest to vibrate up and down.
As he does not have actual hands in robot mode, his "rust-ray rifle" pegs into holes in his dragon-heads' jaws. There is a minor variation to the rifle: some have twin holes just above the "ammo clip", while others have two raised circles.

Titans Return

(thumbnail)
Our love ain’t nothing but a monster with two heads.
  • Daburu & Autobot Twinferno (Deluxe Class,2016)
"Autobot Twinferno" is part of the third wave ofTitans Return Deluxe Class toys, transforming from a two-headed dragon into a robot and back. His weapons can be wielded separately in5 mm post-compatible holes in his dragon heads, wings, and hands or tab into the top of his shoulders. The weapons can also combine into a double-barreled weapon that can be piloted by Titan Master figures or be pegged into the robot or dragon's back. While in dragon mode, Daburu can ride in a compartment within the stomach, or stand on the dragon's back. His monster mode retains its organically-detailed limbs and sports a small, nonfunctional circular sawblade in the chest as a homage to the original figure.
The figure was a commonly-found shelfwarmer of the line, often lining entire pegs with unsold figures even through future wave releases.
Twinferno was laterretooled into his fellow MonsterbotsGrotusque andRepugnus,Buzzworthy BumblebeeFangry, and his body (sans the head) serves as a model for the non-toyLegends version ofBlackZarak's Transtector.

Legends

Hey! Somebody lost their Targetmaster!
  • Targetmaster Doublecross (Deluxe Class,2017)
Released in the twenty-third wave of Takara'sLegends line, "Targetmaster Doublecross" is a redeco of theTitans Return Deluxe figure, now in anime-accurate colors, with his now-Headmaster partner painted up as theBeastformers characterWhite Leo.
Doublecross also comes with his own TargetmasterHaywire (Haywire's mold was probably not production-ready in time forLegends Blurr, hence the odd release pairing with Doublecross), who attaches to his dragon mode chest thanks to minor retooling to add an additional 5 mm port.

Merchandise

Tiny Titans

(thumbnail)
Some Hasbro employee circa 2014 really loved this guy.
  • Autobot Twinferno (Tiny Titans,2015)
  • Series:3
  • Number:12/12
Part of the third assortment ofTiny Titansblindpacks, this version of "Twinferno" is a very small, soft-plastic figure of him in robot mode, spitting fire from one of his dragon-head hands.
He includes a collectible card that renders him in the2015Robots in Disguise styling. The card includes a scan-badge for theRobots in Disguise mobile game, which unlocks a random amount of Energon "currency" and a randomized bonus power-up item.
This is also the first toy/merchandise of the character to use the "Twinferno" name.

Notes

  • Doublecross'sTech Spec gives him a Strength rating of "1". This is presumably an editing gaffe, since the only other times a "1" showed up in anybody's ratings were in cases such as the Mini-Vehicles andThrottlebots, under "Firepower"—indicating that they had no guns at all! However, Doublecross's "1" was taken at face value by theMore than Meets the Eye profile books, which state that Doublecross is extremely weak, as well as hisTitan Return figure's stat card, which gives him a 5, the same as smaller characters likeLaserbeak andRavage. None of his fictional portrayals follow this, however.
  • All of their original instruction graphics depictRepugnus with Doublecross's rust-ray rifle and Doublecross with Repugnus's venom laser.
  • Doublecross is depicted as having functional hands in his alt-mode but not in his robot mode, a rarity (possibly unique) among Generation 1 characters.

Foreign names

  • Japanese:Doublecross (ダブルクロスDaburukurosu)
  • French:Traître
  • Italian:Drekbot
  • Mandarin:Shuāngtóulóng (China, 双头龙, "Twin-headed Dragon")

References

  1. "Twinferno" is a substitute name used by Hasbro for new toys representing theGeneration 1 Doublecross character, presumably because the name "Doublecross" is currently not available as atrademark, first used for a non-transformingTiny Titans figure released as part of the 2015-onwardsRobots in Disguise line, and subsequently also for a transforming figure from theTitans Return line released in 2016. It wasalso used as the name of anactual character fromRobots in Disguise that had its own toys.
