While he was nominated for a Tony Award twice and a Golden Globe once, his most prominent role was as the voice of the originalEmperor Palpatine inThe Empire Strikes Back...or it was, until he was replaced with Ian McDiarmid in the DVD release. He also provided the voice forDoctor Doom in the video gameMarvel: Ultimate Alliance. (Palpatine and Doom.DAMN)

He made a number of prominent guest appearances on television, on programs likeColumbo,Dynasty, andThe Closer. He also played Alfred Pennyworth in the first few episodes ofBatman: The Animated Series.
