Season 2, often referred to asSeries 15, was the second series of the2023 run ofDoctor Who produced byBBC in collaboration withSony'sBad Wolf andDisney Branded Television for streaming onDisney+.

TheChristmas Special was broadcast on25 December2024 with the season premiering at 8am on12 April2025. Unlike thepreceding season, this season opened with only a single episode.

Overview

Early announcements

InMay2017, it was announced that due to the terms of a deal betweenBBC Worldwide andSMG Pictures inChina, the company hasfirst right of refusal on the purchase for the Chinese market of past and future series and spin-offs of the programme.[1][2]

2022

During a conference run by theBBC Academy on5 October2022 calledClimate Creatives, showrunnerRussell T Davies spoke toBBCChief Content OfficerCharlotte Moore about how they would tackle the issue ofclimate change on the show in what he labelled his "season 2" at the helm of the show, also talking about how to present the issues on-screen.[3][4][5]

On8 December, Davies announced inDoctor Who Magazineissue 585 that he was already writing the special for this series.[6]

2023

On22 June2023, Davies announced inDoctor Who Magazineissue 592 that the first four scripts of this series were already being written at the same time, saying "And there isn't time to pause, as we leap on to the2025 season. Right now, four scripts are being written simultaneously…" as well as teasing with the words "garden", "firmament" and "diploma".[7]

On13 July,Ncuti Gatwa was interviewed byRolling Stone UK, and besides discussing what the show meant to him, said "I’m planning on getting back to [the theatre] next year, after I finish season two of Doctor Who", confirming that Gatwa would return for at least this series in addition toSeries 14.[8]

On17 August, inDoctor Who Magazineissue 594, it was revealed that this series would have at least one guest writer andScott Handcock noted in his Production Diary that "Scripts are still coming in, crew are getting booked, and meetings are filling the diaries", with formal prep for the series set to begin soon.[9]

On12 October, inDoctor Who Magazineissue 596, it was revealed that this series would consist of 9 episodes, the same amount as the previous season. Two new directors were also unveiled.[10][11]

"Filming Starts Today".

On23 October, theDoctor Who socials released a short video in theDoctor Who Prop Store ofthe TARDIS being unveiled from under a curtain and dematerialising, huge letters appearing on screen saying "Filming Starts Today".[12]

On6 November, following the Press Screening of the first of the2023 specials,The Star Beast, Davies revealed exclusively during a Q&A thatNicola Coughlan would be appearing in the2024 special.[13]

On9 NovemberDoctor Who Magazineissue 597 was released, which contained the Production Diary from Scott Handcock, noting the latest news.[14] Inhis column in the issue, Davies teased a script containing the words "radiation", "moth", and "skiffle".[15]

On13 November, it was officially revealed on theDoctor Who website that Nicola Coughlan would be appearing alongside Gatwa in the series' special.[16][17]

On22 November, Davies revealed in an interview withBig Issue that he had just handed in a script that would go on air inMay2025, saying "If I sound a bit hyper, it’s because I just this morning delivered a Doctor Who script that will be on air in May 2025."[18][19]

2024

On4 January2024, inissue 599 ofDoctor Who Magazine, it was revealed inScott Handcock's Production Diary that an actor who had previously appeared in an anniversary special would be appearing in an episode of the season.[20]

On1 FebruaryDoctor Who Magazineissue 600 was released, in whichRussell T Davies gave an update on the series in hisLetter from the Showrunner column, saying that theChristmas Special should be locked on editing by this point and VFX had begun, with episodes 1 and 4 being filmed entirely, with an opening scene filmed at a later point, and episode 2 would feature a guest actor who played another character in the past, as well as episode 7 which "sits waiting" to be filmed and episode 8 to be written soon.[21]

On29 FebruaryDoctor Who Magazineissue 601 was released, in which two new directors were revealed,Amanda Brotchie andMakalla McPherson.[22][23]

On12 April it was announced in a press release thatVarada Sethu would be joiningNcuti Gatwa andMillie Gibson in the season.[24][25]

On16 April,Entertainment Weekly presented Ncuti Gatwa as their cover story and revealed two new costumes for the Doctor in this season. In a promotional interview with Russell T Davies, he revealed that Millie Gibson was still very much part of the new season.EW also revealed they got to watch an episode being filmed, involving "space stations,holograms, and the Doctor using hisbrain to thwart an interstellar foe".[26][27]

On17 April, in the cover story forSFX magazine, Davies stated that "the Ruby Sunday story literally spans those two years", referring to this season and the previous one.[28]

Gatwa toldAttitude magazine that the season was over halfway filmed in an interview published in the May/June 2024 issue.[29]

At theseason one premiere event on25 April, Gatwa and Gibson toldMetro that Sethu brought an "amazing energy" to the series, teasing that they had an "incredible dynamic" with her.[30]

The same day, in an interview withRadio Times, Gibson said she "knows how [the season] ends", but that she could "only guess" at her future on the show afterwards, adding that she "might be here with awalking stick in a few decades".[31][32]

Also on that day,Doctor Who Magazineissue 603 was released, in which Davies teased inhis column three words from the season's climax: "tinderbox", "Croydon", and "threshold".[33]

On6 May, Davies toldMen's Journal that the season would have a more diverse group of writers than the previous one.[34]

On7 May, Davies toldMetro that filming for the season had been completed inApril.[35]

On14 May,Steven Moffat revealed in an interview withTV Choice Magazine that he had written theChristmas Special,Joy to the World.[36]

Varada Sethu return announcement

After Varada Sethu unexpectedly appeared asMundy Flynn inSeason 1 episode 3,Boom, on18 May, Moffat teased in interviews that Davies had a plan for Sethu in Season 2, which he compared to the story arc ofClara Oswald.[37] Davies clarified on social media that Sethu would not be reprising the role of Mundy Flynn, and teased that "timey-wimey" elements would come into play. Sethu added that fans would have to "wait and see" regarding the reasons for her return.[38]

On22 June, an exclusive sneak peek of this season was revealed inDoctor Who: Unleashed, inthe episode attached to part two of the Season 1 finale,Empire of Death[+]Loading...["Empire of Death (TV story)"].[39]

The same day,Anita Dobson revealed in an interview withRadio Times that season 2 would have more answers about her character, the mysteriousMrs Flood.[40]

Also on that day, in aBehind the Scenesdocumentary episode attached toEmpire of Death, Davies revealed a little bit about the forthcomingChristmas Special, describing it as the "maddest ever" with "a great story of who the Doctor is when he's alone".[41]

On10 June, theBAFTA event "A Life in Pictures: Russell T Davies" was held, in which Davies teased that episode 6 was a "riot" and involved an unspecified film "crossed with that thing".[42]

On10 July,SFX 381 was released, in which Davies said that the Mrs Flood mystery "hasn’t been explained, and it might never be".[43]

On26 July, at a panel atSan Diego Comic Con, a preview for theChristmas Special was released, and the name of Sethu's character was announced to beBelinda Chandra.[44] Millie Gibson revealed thatJonah Hauer-King had been cast as a character who would be "joining Ruby's journey".[45] It was also revealed at the panel that the season would have an episode packed full of songs and thatfourth wall breaks would be a regular element going forward.[46][47] Gibson also stated that the season would explore Ruby's life "after the Doctor".[48]

On2 August, Davies toldSFX magazine that "great answers" to the mystery of Mrs Flood were coming in the next season.[49]

On7 August,SFX 382 was released, in which Davies promised "great answers, great solutions" to the mystery of Mrs Flood.[50]

On15 August, inDoctor Who Magazineissue 607, Davies revealed thatPhil Collinson had visitedNew York City in mid-July to recordADR with a guest star. He also revealed that they had received permission to film a particular shot ofLondon for special effects work, and that there had been an "important" shoot with drones in a city "thousands of miles" away. Anita Dobson revealed her story of being asked to return, saying "Russell T Davies called me into his office. It was scary! Like going to the headmaster".[51][52]

On17 September, it was revealed viaDeadline thatArchie Panjabi was set to play a villain in the forthcoming season.[53]

On10 October,Doctor Who Magazineissue 609 was released, in which Davies gave a breakdown inhis column of where the season's eight episodes were in production at the time.[54]

On19 October, while speaking atFilm and Comic Con Cardiff, Anita Dobson revealed that viewers would know everything about Mrs Flood.[55]

On12 November, Steven Moffat spoke to BBC South East news, in which he offered a little teaser about the upcoming Christmas special. He also talked about how Russell T Davies had sent him anemail asking Moffat to write it as he needed to get on with the season.[56]

Joy to the World poster

On23 November, the officialDoctor Who accounts revealed a promo poster forJoy to the World on theirTwitter andInstagram.[57][58]

On5 December,Doctor Who Magazineissue 611 was released, in which Davies revealed that the team are working on 14 episodes. This included the upcoming Christmas Special, the episodes of season 2 as well as the 5-episodespin-off,The War Between the Land and the Sea.Tom Spilsbury also offered his preview ofJoy to the World.[59][60][61] Davies further teased the "terrifying return" of a weapon not seen since theNinth Doctor's era in2005, saying "What a comeback!"[62]

On10 December, Davies appeared onThe One Show, where he talked about the coming season, saying "It’s coming sooner than you think".[63][64]

On19 December, Davies and Moffat were interviewed byThe Hollywood Reporter, in which they talked about the upcoming special and casting ofNicola Coughlan. They also mentioned that theTime Hotel set was only used a single day and was transformed into a futuristichospital on awar-torn site for the following season.[65]

On20 December, it was revealed in a Press Release on theDoctor Who website thatRose Ayling-Ellis was set to join the the cast of the upcoming season, guest-starring as the lead of one episode. On the news Ayling-Ellis said: "I loved Doctor Who when I was growing up, so being cast in the show was a dream come true. My inner child is ecstatic with excitement!"[66]

The first teaser for the season was released after the premiere ofJoy to the World on25 December.[67]

The same day, Davies toldTV Insider in an interview that the coming season would begin with the Doctor actively looking for his new companion, as he was told by Joy in the preceding special.[68]

2025

The four guest writers of the season

On27 January2025, the officialDoctor Who website announced four writers for the season:Pete McTighe,Juno Dawson,Inua Ellams andSharma Angel-Walfall.[69]

On29 January, Anita Dobson told theRadio Times that Mrs Flood's identity and motives would be revealed by the end of the season.[70]

On30 January,Doctor Who Magazineissue 613 was released, in whichRussell T Davies took the readers on a tour through the filming sets of the series and spoke about the upcoming episodes, mentioning aRobo-chamber, a mysteriousPalace from the season finale, the once-Time Hotelfoyer transformed into awartimehospital in theNorth Zone and a unique and terrifyingshop from episode 5. He also mentioned that thecartoon man from the trailer is voiced by an old friend of the show, and also said "The show in 2025 is going to be bigger and madder and darker, taking wilder swings than ever".[71]

On5 February, writerInua Ellams revealed in his digitalnewsletter that the new season would be broadcast inApril andMay of 2025.[72]

On14 February, it was announced on official social media thatSusan Twist would be appearing in the season.[73][74]

The same day,Julie Gardner spoke about the upcoming season on theRadio Free Skaro podcast during theGallifrey One convention inLos Angeles,California,USA, talking about being "excited" for the season and praising Gatwa as an "epic Doctor". Gardner also mentioned it was "brilliant to haveMillie Gibson back asRuby", and that she had just done finishing work on Episode Seven.[75]

On15 February, Dawson was interviewed byAttitude 101, in which she revealed that her episode is "the most ridiculous episode they’ve ever done… And the most expensive."[76]

Speaking to theRadio Times at the Newport Beach Film Festival UK & IE Honours event on19 February, Sethu explained there would be "nods" to herBoom character, Mundy Flynn, while stressing that Mundy and Belinda were separate characters.[77]

On21 February, it was announced thatChristopher Chung had been cast asCassio in what Davies described as "one of the darkest, toughest episodes we've ever made". Chung said he was thrilled to enter theWhoniverse, describing the episode as "huge".[78]

The same day, a teaser trailer released onBBC iPlayer confirmed prematurely that the season would premiere on12 April.[79]

In an interview withVogue released on23 February, Sethu said that Belinda "really feels like an equal to the Doctor", with a "sense of self" not dependent on the Doctor.[80]

On24 February, it was announced officially via BBC Newsround that the season would indeed start broadcasting on 12 April.[81]

On26 February, it was announced thatAlan Cumming would guest star as the voice ofMr Ring-a-Ding.[82]

A full trailer was released on2 March, revealing several new guest stars:Rylan Clark,Caoilfhionn Dunne,Evelyn Miller,Ariyon Bakare, andJulie Dray as well as a host of new monsters and aliens.[83]

On6 March,Freddie Fox was announced via a press release to be joining the season as a villain. Davies described him as coming "with fury, venom, cunning and a beautiful set of horns". Fox said he had an amazing time and was honoured to be asked to appear.[84]

On20 March, it was announced in a press release thatKadiff Kirwan would be joining the season for "an intergalactic gargantuan extravaganza". Davies told that "We’re so lucky inCardiff to open the doors to world-class talent, and it’s been a riot, getting to work with Kadiff". Kirwan said he "[felt] elated to be joining the rich legacy of actors who have guest-starred in Doctor Who".[85]

On22 March, the episode titles were announced in a series of animated title cards:The Robot Revolution,[86]Lux,[86]The Well,[86]Lucky Day,[86]The Story & the Engine,[86][87]The Interstellar Song Contest,[86]Wish World,[86] andThe Reality War.[86] A subsequent press release identified the writers and directors of each episode.[87]

"Get Her Home" poster

A second trailer was released on24 March, which among other things revealed ananimated segment of episode 2, andBenjamin Chivers as a part of the cast.[88] A new poster was also revealed.[89]

On25 March, Gatwa and Sethu were interviewed onGood Morning America, in which they talked about the new season, which they described as "so much fun" and said that "Whovians will love this season, there are so many Easter eggs for them."[90] A clip from the first episode,The Robot Revolution, was shown.[91]

Later the same day it was announced in a press release thatCharlie Condou would be joining the season for "what [he] think[s] is one of the most exciting and unforgettable episodes so far!" Davies himself said "It’s a delight to work with him at last, and I can't wait for people to see the wildness of this story."[92]

On26 March,SFX 390 was released, in which Davies revealed that Mrs Flood would be appearing in every episode of the season as part of "spectacular answers" to be unveiled.[93]

"One Hell of a Journey Home" poster

On29 March, the officialDoctor Who social media revealed a new poster for the season.[94][95]

On1 April, the5251st issue ofRadio Times was released previewing the new season, taglined "Varada Sethu's journey from MissNewcastle toouter space - as theTime Lord's new travelcompanion, Belinda".[96]

The same day, the BBC released a handful of new preview images from the new season.[97]

On8 April, Davies was interviewed byTV Choice for what they dubbed "The Big Interview", in which they talked about the imminent new season and what to expect. Davies revealed tidbits about it, including that there will be a connection between Sethu's companion character Belinda and her previous character,Boom'sMundy Flynn; Mrs Flood being an omnipresent character much likeSusan Twist's ownSusan Triad doubles; the penultimate episodeWish World being set on the date of its broadcast; and some of the new and scary monsters.[98]

On11 April, it was announced in a press release thatGraham Norton would be joining the season's sixth episode,The Interstellar Song Contest, with Davies saying of the casting: "There’s no song contest without the great man himself, and it was an honour to welcome Graham Norton to our studios in Cardiff. And it’s not just a cameo, he has a whole plot twist all to himself! This is the wildest episode of all, and we’re lucky to have Graham adding to the mayhem."[99]

Same day, Gatwa appeared in his Fifteenth Doctor costume as a celebrity guest onJeopardy! to promote Season 2.
