Roses was aBrief Encounter short story published inDoctor Who Magazine214. It revealed the true name ofthe Doctor's granddaughter after she had used the alias "Susan Foreman" to blend in withEarth.

Somewhere in space, theFirst Doctor tends theroses inhis garden whileSteven rests inthe TARDIS. But the Doctor's plans for a spot of relaxing gardening are short-lived, as a sinisterblack spinning obelisk suddenly appears in the sky.

- The events of this story take place after the television storyThe Daleks' Master Plan, as well as during those of the television storyThe Five Doctors.
- The novelisation ofThe Five Doctors describes the Doctor at this time as being "a Doctor nearing the end of his first incarnation" (quote, page 10).
- Susan's name inHigh Gallifreyan was Arkytior, which means "rose". This means that the first companions of both the 1963 and 2005 versions of the series were named "Rose".
