Madchester är en term för att beskriva denalternativa musikscen som växte fram i trakten avManchester,England i slutet av 1980- och början på 1990-talet. Musiken var en blandning avindiepop,psykedelisk musik ochdance/acid house. Tidsepoken var också präglad av både rave-/housepartyn ochecstasy var "det nya stora". Mycket av Madchester-kulturen kretsade kringNew Orders/Factory Records legendariska nattklubbThe Haçienda.
Centrala Madchesterartister var bland andra rockbandenHappy Mondays,Stone Roses,The Charlatans,Inspiral Carpets ochJames, samt elektroniska dansakter som808 State ochA Guy Called Gerald.
Madchester-epoken dog ut i mitten av 1990-talet, dels på grund av en kreativ stagnation, dels på grund av de gängbråk och drogproblem som orsakade The Haçiendas stängning och i förlängningenFactory Records konkurs, vilket finansiellt och organisatorisk slog hårt mot Madchester-rörelsen.
