"A wall of light, created by many Jedi joined together, can push the darksiders back."
―Arca Jeth[2]

Awall of light was an immensemanifestation of potentially destructivelight sideForce energy created by the focused power of a unitedJedi front. When performed successfully, a wall of light allowed participants to effectively contain or purge the power of thedark side from a specific location, orsever an especially dangerousdarksider from their Force connection. The ability was popular amongGreat Sith War–era members of theJedi Order, who used it to great effect against the resurgentDark Lords ofExar Kun'sSith Brotherhood, and later against thespirit of Kun, by the inaugural class ofLuke Skywalker'sJedi Praxeum.

Description[]

"When you feel the dark side energies turned against you, you must use your Jedi abilities to take power away from an opponent, rather than to inflict harm. This technique blinds your enemy to the Force with a wall of light, a permanent blockage if you so choose, rendering him unable to use Jedi powers. It is difficult. And it is the most devastating attack possible using the powers of the light side."
―Odan-Urr, via the Tedryn Holocron[3]

The use ofthe Force to create a wall oflight side energy was aJedi's most devastating offensiveability.[3] The technique required the collective effort of several participants[2] to form—with considerable difficulty—an all-encompassingprison ofblue energy, from which thedark side could not escape.Celestialbodies besieged by a wall of light were sterilized[4] utterly withflames and violent weather phenomena,[5] whilewielders of the dark side found themselves completely blocked from the Force.[3]

Applications[]

"We must create a wall of light…either to cleanse…ordestroy."
―Nomi Sunrider[5]

The primary purpose for the creation of a wall of light around a specific location was the quarantine or total eradication of the dark side's malevolent influence.[5]Jedi Knights also used walls of light to harmlessly[3] subdue[6] or repel[2] extremely dangerous enemies.[6] Under dire circumstances, however, a lone Jedi was able to channel the light side of the Force to offensively incapacitate a foe,[7] but use of such power often brought forth unexpected and potentially catastrophic results. The victim of a wall of light experienced extreme agony[5] as their connection to the Force was interrupted in aseverance that could be made permanent at the discretion of the Jedi.[3] Walls of light were also an effective weapon against Sithspirits.[1]

Draethos Jedi KnightOdan-Urr used a wall of light to disconnectSith LordNaga Sadow's defeatedSith warriors from the Force in the final stages of theGreat Hyperspace War.[8] He later recorded a detailed account of the ability in theTedryn Holocron.[3] More than athousand years after the Hyperspace War,[8] Odan-Urr taught a prodigious Jedi Knight namedNomi Sunrider to utilize walls of light in the harmless incapacitation of enemies.[5] During the Jediconclave onDeneba,ArkanianJedi MasterArca Jeth inferred that a wall of light was required to drive away theKrathcult,[2] whoseholy crusade against theRepublic[9] had spread the influence of the dark side acrossthe galaxy.[10] When the Krath laterattacked the planetCoruscant, their leader, fallen Jedi–turned–SithLordUlic Qel-Droma, was defeated and trapped within a wall of light by MastersVodo-Siosk Baas andThon, who were assisted by KnightsTott Doneeta,Cay Qel-Droma, Nomi Sunrider,[11]Dace Diath, andSylvar.[6]

Nomi Sunriderfaced Qel-Droma again onOssus and imprisoned him within a wall of light[7] that inadvertently resulted in Qel-Droma's permanent severance from the Force.[5] At theculmination of theGreat Sith War, Sunrider guided thousands of Jedi,[12] including Tott Doneeta, Sylvar,Oss Wilum, and Thon, in the creation of a wall of light over theYavin moon to defeatDark Lord of the SithExar Kun. Although hisspirit had been successfully trapped within the walls of hisMassassitemple, a planet-wide firestorm caused by the Jedi's magnified power annihilated Yavin 4's landscape in the process.[5] More thanfour thousand years later, Kun's ghost was forever cleansed from Yavin 4 through the creation of a wall of light initiated by the trainees of MasterLuke Skywalker'sJedi Praxeum.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Wall of light was first mentioned inTom Veitch andKevin J. Anderson'sDescent to the Dark Side, the third issue in theStar Wars: Tales of the Jedi - Dark Lords of the Sithcomic book story arc. Wall of light's first appearance was inThe Battle of Coruscant, the second issue ofTales of the Jedi's subsequentSith War story arc. It was also featured as the means by which the Jedi and Republic defeated Exar Kun inThe Sith War's final issue, titledDark Lord. WhileThe Sith War 6: Dark Lord depicts the destruction of Yavin 4's landscape as the result of the Jedi's creation of a wall of light,The Essential Atlas states incorrectly that the moon's surface was destroyed byorbital bombardment.

In theBioWare MMORPGStar Wars: The Old Republic, one of the servers is named after this Force technique.[13]
