The Royal City[9] ofTheed was thecapitalcity ofNaboo, aplanet located inthe galaxy'sMid Rim. Originally a farming village, the city was formally founded circa832 BBY whenKingJafan established the city as the planetary capital afteruniting the planet's numerous city-states following a longcivil war. Located on a sheer cliff over a vast floodplain, the city was home to theRoyal House of Naboo'sRoyal Palace and theRoyal House of Learning.
History[]
Founding[]

Theed at dusk in19 BBY
The city of Theed began as afarming village, established by the localNaboo along the fertile banks of theSolleu River. The area, criss-crossed by the river's many tributaries, was suitable to permanent construction and quickly grew in numbers. WhenKingJafanunifiedNaboo's many warring city-states, he established his capital on the steppelands, which by that time had been densely populated by settlers who had fled the bloodycivil war Jafan had ended.[1]
As a result of Jafan's unification and the strict planning regimes and extensive rebuilding projects undertaken after the upheavals, the city took on a unified and harmoniousarchitectural style ofsandstone-like block buildings with green shingles on the roofs. A series of underground tunnels were built in the city's porous surface, all of which were meticulously maintained for generations. The sophisticated culture which emerged was suitable to the cultivation of politicians and statesmen, all of whom trained and studied the art ofpolitics and public service in the city's many fineuniversities.[1]
Elected monarchy[]

Theed is occupied by theTrade Federation.
Following a long reign by a hereditary dynasty, theMonarch of Naboo became an elected official, and the world prospered. Theed had lost all vestiges of its simple past and instead bred generations of a leisure class which enhanced the city's arts and education, erecting monuments to rulers and philosophers, building museums and concert halls, and implementing policy to ensure all citizens would serve in theLegislative Youth Program during their years in academia.[1] The city'sgovernor was afforded thePrince or Princess of Theed.
During the reign ofKingBon Tapalo, Naboo entered a trade agreement with theTrade Federation andDamask Holdings, which changed Theed forever. A triple-domedPlasma Refinery Complex was erected on former parkland, and the Solleu was rerouted to accommodate its footprint. The Federation beganmining theplasma out of the city land, bringing in substantial profits that helped the city expand. In32 BBY, friction between the Federation andQueenPadmé Amidala culminated in aninvasion of the planet and the placement of the city's population in POW camps.[2] ANeimoidian Throne wasconstructed in the city as a sign of the occupation.[10] When the Queen led her people tovictory, she immediately began reconstruction efforts, seeing the completion of the massiveTheed Spaceport and thePalace Courtyard before the end of her term.
As theSeparatist Crisis began to take hold in theGalactic Senate, the beloved former queen was appointedSenator of theChommell sector. During this time, QueenJamillia opened the city to refugees fleeing secessionist worlds that began joining theConfederacy of Independent Systems. As the world's populace became more restless, protests by disgruntledspice miners began to disrupt local life.[11]
Clone Wars[]

Theed under attack by the Separatist Droid Army during the Clone Wars
During theClone Wars between theGalactic Republic and the Confederacy, which began in22 BBY,[12] a bazaar was held on the outskirts of Theed. Many were in attendance, including Senator Amidala and a reclusiveartist, who caught the gaze of the senator and became overwhelmed with visions of her and her unborn twins. Twenty-four weeks later, Theed wasattacked by theSeparatist Droid Army, including B1 battle droids and anOG-9 homing spider droid. Amidala was in the city at the time and attempted to escape, which she did through the help of theartist, who, having had an epiphany through his visions, saved her life by takingblaster-fire meant for her. The artist survived his injuries.[13]
In21 BBY,[14]ChancellorPalpatine returned to the city for the annualFestival of Light. He was the victim of akidnapping attempt, although he was rescued byAnakin Skywalker.[15]
Imperial era[]

Inhabitants celebrate the death of Emperor Palpatine.
The Clone Wars ended abruptly in19 BBY, and the citizens of Naboo were shocked whenAlderaan'ssenatorBail Organa arrived in Theed with the body of the beloved Senator Amidala. Apparently Amidala had beenkilled by aJedi Knight during theJedi Order's uprising against the Republic, but the story was simply a fabrication by Naboo native Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. After thefuneral of the former queen, self-declaredEmperor Palpatine of the newly formedGalactic Empire kept heavy scrutiny on QueenApailana.[8]
Not long after the Empire rose to power, abattle erupted in the city when theRoyal Naboo Security Forces and severalGungans attacked the newly built Imperial garrison in the city, bent on stoppingGrand InquisitorMalorum from learning the secret of the birth of Amidala'stwins,Luke andLeia Skywalker. Ultimately, ex-JediFerus Olin confronted Malorum and killed him in Theed's Plasma Refinery Complex, resulting in the retreat and destruction of the Imperial squadron. Afterwards theTheed Hangar, being used by the Imperials to store illegal explosives, was destroyed by Olin; consequently, Naboo escaped serious punishment by the Empire, which didn't wish to draw attention to the fact that they were breaking the law.[8]
The Empire did not stay quiet, though. As evidence emerged that Apailana had opened Theed toJedi survivors, an Imperialassault led by the501st Legion stormed the city intent on eliminating Queen Apailana and the several fugitive Jedi her court had been harboring. Thestormtroopers swiftly occupied the city and slew the Queen and her Jedi protectors.[16] To ensure that the next monarch would toe the line, the Empire installedKylantha as the next queen and promoted the loyalQuarsh Panaka toMoff. Because Naboo was Palpatine's homeworld, and Theed in particular the Emperor's hometown, it also heavily celebratedEmpire Day, during which the Imperial Executor, Darth Vader, frequently visited the city to give a speech about the founding of the Empire as well as present medals to Imperial officers. In addition, Imperial military parades occurred on the streets of the city for the holiday with statues of Palpatine being raised.[3] After theBattle of Yavin, Theed was victim of aterrorist attack committed by theMummers.[17]
Theed remained the capital of Naboo even during theGalactic Civil War, and waswrested from Imperial control after theBattle of Endor in4 ABY by citizens tired of Imperial control.[18] A game which originated in the city, calledTheed quoits, was still played in41 ABY byGrand AdmiralGilad Pellaeon of theImperial Remnant.[19]

However, rather than re-filming the scene within the CGI models, they simply flipped the frames used earlier. The result is that the city of Theed in Episode VI is a mirrored version of that in Episode I. Shots of Theed inStar Wars: Episode IIIRevenge of the Sith also display the mirrored version of the city.
