"They trained us to treat that armor like it was part of us."
Terex[9]

Stormtrooper armor was the standardarmor worn by thestormtroopers, the elite shocktroops of theGalactic Empire. Awhiteplastoid composite worn over a blackbody glove, the armor represented some of the best in the Empire and was dreaded byrebel freedom fighters.

Description[]

Overview[]

"Each stormtrooper wears an eighteen-piece armor set made of white plastoid."
―Excerpt fromRuescott Melshi's rebel field manual[10]

Developed by theImperial Department of Military Research,[1]stormtrooperarmor was the standard issue armor of theImperial Army'sStormtrooper Corps, and was manufactured on planets such asGilvaanen.[11][3] It was introduced sometime after the conclusion of theClone Wars, and was intended to replace thePhase II clone trooper armor. It was made up of 18 individual, overlappingplastoid composite plates and synth-leatherboots which allowed for mobility, while also dispersing energy, protecting the wearer from glancing and low powerblaster bolts and fire fromSlugthrowers. A reinforced alloy plate ridge assisted the user's upper thigh, and a sniper position knee protector plate over a wearer's left knee helped improve accuracy when crouching. While most armor was fitted for humans, other forms were manufactured to fit other body types.[2] A soft click would inform the wearer of whether or not they had correctly attached the armor.[12]

Stormtrooper armor was capable of protecting its wearer in extreme environments, includingdeserts, forest, icy wastelands, and limited exposure to thevacuum ofspace. The armor's torso plating featured environmental controls on its midsection, its blackbody glove was vacuum-sealed[1] and made of a smart material that could adjust to the wearers body heat and external temperature.[12] Though arebreather pack was required for extended use in environments that lacked a breathableatmosphere or to filter potent toxins.[13] Troops in the field were allowed additional ammunition and comprehensive survival equipment, with backpacks that could feature field communicator sets, mortar launchers, and blaster components.[2]

It was a punishable offense to utilize the armor's internal cooling options in noncritical situations due to its power drain, however many Imperial cadets still attempted to do so. Stormtroopers were also expected to remain in uniform at all times, with the rule considered essential for maintaining the public trust and representing the Empire in a positive, professional manner. By wearing one's armor, one represented the Empire, not the individual.[12]

Helmet[]

Its reinforced combat helmet featured an integratedcomlink,[14] audio pick-up, two artificialair-supply hoses, and a broadband communications antenna powered by a single power cell.[15] The helmet, affectionately known as "buckets" by Imperials but derisively known by that name by rebels,[16] featured built-in filtration systems that extracted breathable atmosphere from polluted environments[2] and could accommodate an externalbreath mask which would filter more complex particulates and fumes.[16] The helmet's visual processor assisted the wearer in seeing in darkness, glare, and smoke,[1] though it limited the wearer's field of vision to a degree.[14]

When firing a blaster, the helmet's visor polarized against the glare. A built-in heads-up display also provided targeting diagnostics, power levels and environmental readings at the corner of the wearer's eyesight, and one could access data on various military subjects and civilian organizations on the helmets display. In addition, motion sensors alerted the wearer to any enemy the soldier might have missed. Seeking to discourage nonessential chatter, which was strictly off-limits while on-duty, stormtrooper helmets recorded everything that was said by the user, sending it to monitors to review after downloading the data off of the armor's memory.[12] However, many stormtroopers engaged in idle conversation anyway.[17]

Utility belts were equipped with a variety of features including a compact toolkit, power packs, energy rations, and a holster for anE-11 medium blaster rifle.[3] The belts may have also featured a backupC1 personal comlink, macrobinoculars, and agrappling hook. OneBlasTechN-20 Baradium-core thermal detonator was given to each trooper, and was placed on the back of their utility belt. The controls to the detonator were not labeled, to prevent enemy troops from using them. While detonators were not usually used within ships or bases, troopers carried a full complement of such field gear to be prepared for any situation.[2]

Higherranks were signified with acolor codedpauldron worn over the right shoulder. The rank ofcommander was represented with an orange pauldron,[1] though one soldier who served underthe Grand Inquisitor had his colored red.[18] Black identified enlisted soldiers.[2] Several black pauldroned stormtroopers accompaniedGrand MoffWilhuff Tarkin to theplanetLothal,[19] and later came aboard hisflagship, theSovereign, to serve as reinforcements when it wasinfiltrated by aband of rebels.[20] White pauldrons represented the rank ofsergeant.[2] Blue pauldrons were used to identifystormtrooper snipers.[21]

Weaknesses[]

"The joints in my armor are so obvious. Anyone could get right in-between them."
"You should not expose your weaknesses to the Jedi. Do not even say them out loud."
"Oh. I suppose that makes sense. I think?"

Though the Empire and the wearers of the armor had pride and faith in it, stormtrooper armor had the same limitations as most other types of armor and could not always be successful in completely protecting the wearer. Clone Wars veteransKanan Jarrus andCaptainRex had low subjective opinions of its quality and ability to protect the wearer from harm, with the latter explicitly calling it "garbage" in comparison to the armor worn by clone troopers.[23] Stormtrooper armor was designed to diffuse and mitigate the effect of incoming blaster bolts to keep a majority of hits from being lethal. However, in practice, some blaster bolts could injure or kill a stormtrooper despite their armor, especially if the enemy fired with a good aim.[24]

The joints of stormtrooper armor also posed an obvious weak point for an attacker, which one stormtrooper recognized while on duty. The stormtrooper's statement was rebuked by aPurge Trooper for openly revealing a weakness to possible enemies.[22] Some primitive melee weapons were able to exploit the limitations of the armor; the arrows and spears used byEwoks during theBattle of Endor[25] could hit the gaps in the armor, and a gaderffi stick wielded byBoba Fett during a skirmish onTython, the latter of which was capable of delivering enough blunt force to shatter the armor with a strong enough blow.[26]

History[]

Servants of the Empire[]

"You decided not to make it a career?"
"Maybe if I'd been regular navy. If I'd stayed in, I'd probably be wearing white plastoid now like some of the academy recruits."
Has Obitt andMatese[27]

The white armor of the Stormtrooper Corps became a symbol of Imperial might and domination.

Following theProclamation of the New Order, the formerRepublic'sclone troopers became the first generation ofImperialstormtroopers. The clone stormtroopers continued using theirPhase II clone trooper armor while enforcing the rule of the new regime, while anearly stormtrooper armor of a different design was worn by the "TK-troopers," enlisted stormtroopers who were trained during the earlymonths of theAge of the Empire.[28] Stormtrooper armor[29] close to the final design[3] was also seen at theinvasion of Mon Cala[29] in18 BBY at the same time as TK trooper armor.[30] Eventually, a standard armor design for stormtroopers was settled upon,[3] with their armor becoming a symbol of the Imperial Era.[31]

Indeed, the stark white stormtrooper armor ended up being a perfect summation of the authoritarian empire[32] that leveraged greater and greater control over the galaxy over the course of its reign.[33] Across the entire galaxy, as the Empire employed ruthless and violent control over its subjects, the Stormtrooper Corps served as a force of faceless minions who brought about sorrow and destruction,[32] all while being heralded as a force who maintained order.[34] A key factor in instilling the fear[32]with which the Empire ruled[3] was the stormtrooper helmet, which served as an implacable mask[32] that hid the soldier's face and voice.[24] In the end, every planet across the Empire came to recognize stormtrooper armor as a sign of Imperial oppression.[32]

War with the Rebels and New Republic[]

"What is it with you people and Vader? It can't be the helmet that scares people. Stormtroopers have helmets."
―Alliance First Sergeant Namir during theMid Rim Retreat[12]

In theearly rebellion against the Galactic Empire[35] and subsequentGalactic Civil War, stormtrooper armor was used by the Empire's Stormtrooper Corps in opposition to[3] rebels cells, which combined into theAlliance to Restore the Republic in the name of resisting the Empire.[36]Force-sensitiveEzra Bridger, a young rebel of theSpectres, enjoyed collecting Imperial helmets, including stormtrooper variants.[37] His fellow Spectre, theMandalorianSabine Wren, liked to paint collected Imperial armor. On one occasion, SpectreKanan Jarrus lent her a captured stormtrooper helmet on the promise she would just look at it, yet she decided it looked too bad to not be modified with a paint job.[38] As stormtrooper armor covered the user's entire body, anti-Imperial agents, including members of the rebellion, were able to disguise themselves behind enemy lines with captured gear.[3]

The cracked and battered stormtrooper armor of a Night Trooper

After the fall of the Galactic Empire in5 ABY with theBattle of Jakku,[39] certain Remnant Stormtroopers of theImperial Remnants active in the galaxy wore battered, dirty armor, while others wore pristine and clean gear.[40] TheNight Troopers, alegion of stormtroopers[41] who disappeared withGrand AdmiralMitth'raw'nuruodo "Thrawn" intoexile[6] after theLiberation of Lothal in1 BBY,[39] continued to wear stormtrooper armor that grew damaged over their exile. The armor was repaired with red ropes and a mix of gold and grey materials. Thrawn'sCaptain of the Guard,Enoch, wore a unique face plate on his helmet.[6] Ahead of Thrawn's plannedcampaign against the New Republic, the Grand Admiral and his Night Trooper forces managed to return to the galaxy proper via theEye of Sionhyperspace transport ring.[42]

Salvaged and scavenged[]

Despite the armor's infamy as the gear of the Imperial oppression,[32] certain individuals would to take to wearing[7] or scavenging old stormtrooper gear for their own purposes.[8] OneEwok donned a stormtrooper helmet during theEwok Civil War.[43] By9 ABY,[44] helmetless stormtrooper armor had been adopted by thePlazir-15 Security Detail, a force of guards who maintained the protection of "the Duchess" andBombardier—the elected monarchs of theplanetary government—on the independent planetPlazir-15. On top of the stormtrooper armor, the guards were adorned with colorful cloth pieces.[7] One of thetrash crabs of the planetLanupa managed to get its claws on a stormtrooper helmet, which it took to wearing as a shell[45] as was typical itsspecies'scavenger nature.[46]Terex, a former stormtrooper who took up a life of crime after the Empire's fall, took to wearing pieces of stormtrooper armor as theLord-General of theRanc Gang.[47]

Terex also took to collecting pieces of Imperial gear,[9] something that would become popular among theCentrists political party[48] and within a growing number of civilian circles. While justified by those civilians as the collection of historical artifacts, an actual historian,Beaumont Kin, later reflected that these individuals were separating the crimes of the Empire from the gear used to carry it out its wishes, thereby stripping stormtrooper armor and other Imperial technology of its real history in the name of appreciating an "aesthetic."[49] Later into theNew Republic Era, some stormtrooper armor was painted with the symbol of thepirateWarbird gang and adopted by members of the organization, such as oneKajain'sa'Nikto pirate[8] and the Kajain'sa'NiktoLeoz. Another member of the gang, theTrandoshanSkreek, wore pieces of stormtrooper armor, including a command pauldron.[50]

Additions to the suit[]

Many different pieces of armor and cloth could be added on to the standard stormtrooper uniform. One such example was thewet-weather gear stormtrooper, that wore wet-weather capes and an additional armor plate on the forehead.[51]Desert stormtroopers, magma troopers, and many other environmental variants carriedbackpacks, ammo packs, pauldrons, E-11 holsters,[3] on top of regular stormtrooper armor.[52]

Pauldrons also saw use among stormtroopers to signifyofficers[53]—who were identified asStormtrooper Commanders[54]—among the Stormtrooper Corps, with different pauldron colors corresponding to different ranks.[53]

Behind the scenes[]

Stormtrooper armor exhibits minor aesthetic alterations over the course of the original trilogy. According toPablo Hidalgo of theLucasfilm Story Group, these differences stem from the production design of the films and do not reflect in-universe updates like the distinct phases of the clone troopers' armor. Its stylized depiction inStar Wars Rebels likewise does not represent a separate in-universe model.[55]
