Characteristics[]

Various starfighter models
The majority of starfighters werepiloted directly byliving beings, although some were controlled either remotely or byartificial intelligence. These light craft were designed to carry out attacks on sensitive installations and targets that required immense precision.
Infleet battle, starfighters worked in concert withcapital ships, harassingwarships and striking once their weakenedshields failed[2][3] or were re-aligned[4][5] due to enemy capital-shipfire. Alone, fighters had little to no chance of penetrating the shields of capital ships,[6] but most starfighters worked insquadrons and carried weapons likeproton torpedoes andconcussion missiles. These squadrons could take out a large capital ship with precision fire directed at weak points that might otherwise be hard to target (such as ashield generator or the ship'sbridge).
Behind the scenes[]
Star Wars (1977) 1 refers to theTantive IV as a starfighter. This is inconsistent with how the term has come to be used in subsequent literature.
