Star Wars Roleplaying Game

Wizards of the Coast's version of theStar Wars Roleplaying Game began publication in November of2000, afterWest End Games lost the license to produce their original roleplaying game,Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game. The series ended in April2010 with the publication ofThe Unknown Regions.
The game'score rulebook rules are based on thed20 System used for the third edition ofDungeons & Dragons. One player is the gamemaster, who is in charge of the world—like a director and referee—while the other players each have a single character or role to play. They have various skills and equipment, and some can even usethe Force.Additional sourcebooks for this version of the game provide more background information and stats for many aspects of theStar Wars universe, including details aboutstarships, rules for includingadditional aliens, detailed information on theJedi order anddark side Force users, and information on regions ofthe galaxy such as theCore Worlds orOuter Rim.
In2002, concurrent with the theatrical release ofEpisode II, aRevised Core Rulebook was released, which updated a number of rules and statistics for the game. Subsequent books used this updated rules system, while remaining backwards compatible with the previous books. Wizards of the Coast stopped producing new books for the Revised Edition afterUltimate Adversaries inJune2004, focusing instead on theStar Wars Miniatures line. This was due to Wizards' contract withLucasfilm limiting the number ofStar Wars releases Wizards was allowed per year, combined with the miniatures line being more profitable than the roleplaying game.
A new edition of the roleplaying game, known as theSaga Edition, was released onJune 5,2007. At theCelebration IV convention that year, it was possible to get a free copy of theSaga Edition by telling coauthorRodney Thompson "Let the Wookiee win" at the Wizards of the Coast booth. Additional sourcebooks, such asThe Force Unleashed Campaign Guide and the updatedStarships of the Galaxy, added additional material and rules, including rules for organizations, starship maneuvers, and large-scale cinematic combat. Subsequently, thirteen sourcebooks were produced over the next three years, a significant line of newStar Wars roleplaying products. The sourcebooks have a large amount of background in addition to additional rules and statistics. One of the more notable is theJedi Academy Training Manual, which has a large section devoted to different Force traditions. Similarly, theGalaxy at War sourcebook has a chapter devoted to military organizations. TheScavenger's Guide to Droids sourcebook is almost entirely background, with far fewer rules.
OnJanuary 28th,2010, Wizards of the Coast announced that they were discontinuing theirStar Wars license afterThe Unknown Regions. The Saga Edition Role Playing Game ended along with theStar Wars Miniatures line with the release of that sourcebook. The license to publish roleplaying material was picked up in 2011 byFantasy Flight Games, who later publishedStar Wars: Edge of the Empire.
There were free Wizards of the Coast web supplements available for the roleplaying game onWizards.com, and their roleplaying columnJedi Counseling continued through 2009. These supplements were taken off of the Wizards website after the license lapsed.
