It is a time of renewed hope for the Rebel Allianceas heroic rebel soldiers strive to undermine Imperialforces throughout the galaxy. The Galactic Empirecontinues to hold its domination and has doubled itsefforts to eliminate any who would stand against itsrule. When Rebel droid C-3PO gets captured by SCARSquadron, Darth Vader's team of elite stormtroopers,R2-D2 takes off on a solo mission, stranding Luke inhis X-wing.While searching for R2-D2, Luke turns to the journalof Ben Kenobi, which contains a story from theearlier days of Master Yoda. After a daring rescue,Yoda feels a calling in the Force and follows it –to a planet inhabited only by children....

Plot summary[]

Luke continues to read from the Jedi text. The Jedi Master, Yoda, follows a strange Force call to a dark, desolate world, sensing something ancient and powerful hiding just beneath the surface. He is met by a group of warriors, but they are no older than the students he teaches at the Coruscant Temple.

Yoda tries to assure the children he means no harm, but they are distrustful. One child throws a spear at him, and Yoda notices that its tip is made of a substance imbued with the Force. When more spears are thrown, Yoda uses the Force to levitate rocks and deflect them. Seeing that Yoda came from a faraway place, the children become awestruck, as if they were expecting someone to arrive from the sky.

The children lead Yoda to their home, Mucktown, and reveal that the call he heard was them screaming for help with their minds after swallowing slivers of a sacred rock. They tell Yoda the story of their world: their people once lived in the shadow of beautiful mountains from which they drew power. However, a war broke out between greedy factions, destroying most of the mountains and banishing the losing side to the mud fields. These banished people, who are the children's ancestors, have since lost their powers and have been reduced to living off the few rocks they were able to carry with them. The children also have a captive: a scout from the opposing side, the Rockhawkers.

Yoda senses the captive's fear of the mountain and separates two of the children who begin fighting, using the Force to keep their stones from touching. He tells the children he must go to the mountain and convinces them to let the captive guide him. Yoda recognizes the battle being waged on this world as an ancient, primal struggle between the light and dark sides of the Force, even though the inhabitants have never heard of the Force or the Jedi.

When Yoda and his guide approach the mountain, a voice asks Yoda where he is going. He says he wants to discuss peace and that he has returned one of their own, but the mountain people reject the captive as "just a dog" and threaten Yoda with death. He notices that this group also consists of children, and his guide explains that only the young and wild survive here. The group pelts them with rocks, knocking Yoda out. He later wakes up in chains and is ordered to enter a cave to find something called the Heart of the Mountain.
