Resistance

TheResistance was a military resistance movement that opposed the secretiveFirst Order, afascistmilitaryjunta in theUnknown Regions. The Resistance emerged as a small, unauthorized splinter group from theNew Republic Defense Force that believed that the First Order posed a serious threat to peace anddemocracy, and stood as acheck against the First Order and its ambitions ofgalactic conquest. However, theGalactic Senate did not believe them and regarded them having afixation on thepast. The Resistancefought the First Order after they launched apreemptive strike on theNew Republic and subsequently occupied large swathes of thegalaxy. Yet despite their initial stand alone, the freedom fighters of the Resistance inspired rebellion.

The Resistance was founded byGeneralLeia Organa and was modeled to an extent on the Rebel Alliance. Its members shared General Organa's views regarding the threat fromunknownspace. While still asenator,Princess Organa founded the Resistance after she was sidelined from the Senate following a scandal that revealed her father to be the reviledDarth Vader. General Organa recruited veterans of theGalactic Civil War, likeAdmiralGial Ackbar and other New Republic military personnel likeNew Republic officerPoe Dameron, while many others joined the Resistance asofficers,soldiers,pilots, and in other roles.

During theCold War between the New Republic and First Order, the Resistance initially sought to obtain evidence of illegal military activities and report this to the Senate, but opposed them in open warfare when theymoved in from the Unknown Regions to seizemilitary control of the galaxy in34 ABY. With the help of the lastJedi,Luke Skywalker, and hisapprenticeRey, the Resistance escaped the First Order'ssiege atCrait and lived to fight another day. WhenDarth Sidious, publicly known asEmperorPalpatine,revealed himself to be resurrected and bolstered by theSith Eternal'sarmada ofplanet-destroyingwarships, theFinal Order, the Resistance invaded the ancientSith redoubt at theBattle of Exegol. Together with afleet assembled to reinforce them, the Resistance defeated the Sith Eternal'sforces atExegol. Meanwhile, Rey sacrificed herself to destroy theSith Lord, though she was resurrected byBen Solo, who gave hislife force to save hers. The victory of the Resistance sparked anuprising against the First Order, whose military rule crumbled under a series of attacks.

History[]

Formation[]

At the end of theGalactic Civil War, theGalactic Empire suffered their final defeat against theNew Republic during theBattle of Jakku. The Galactic Empire signed a peace treaty with the New Republic called theGalactic Concordance, which mandated that they keep the peace with the New Republic,^[12] leaving only fragmented^[21]remains scattered aroundthe galaxy^[22] Otherremnants of theImperial Military disappeared into theUnknown Regions, where they quietly formed theFirst Order. Meanwhile, the New Republic carried out themassive demilitarization of theNew Republic Defense Force, reducing it down in the interest of pursuing peace and preventing a galactic war from ever occurring again.PrincessLeia Organa, who had been one of the leaders of theRebel Alliance during the war, argued strongly against the demilitarization policies and said that the New Republic could not trust the Imperial remnants from attacking the New Republic and urged the senate to take the threat seriously, but she was considered a warmonger.^[12]

Senator Leia Organa had formerly been an influential member of theNew Republic Senate, including theDefense Council^[23] but lost almost all credibility following the public revelation of herfather having beenDarthVader and was forced to resign. Following theMission to Sibensko, Leia was partially vindicated when she discovered evidence that a paramilitary faction called theAmaxine warriors was colluding withRinnrivin Di'scartel to overthrow the Republic. While Leia warned that there were more threats, much of the Senate disagreed, with some accusing her of warmongering. Realizing that the Senate could not protect the New Republic, Leia along with the few remaining allies she could trust, such asGial Ackbar,C-3PO,Joph Seastriker, andTemmin Wexley, formed a paramilitary outfit called the Resistance.^[18]

Fearing an occupation of their independenthomeworld,Ryloth, by the First Order during their rise of power, numerousTwi'leks pledged their allegiance to Leia Organa and the Resistance.^[9]

Rise of the First Order[]

To be a check on the designs of the First Order, Organa formed the Resistance with abase onD'Qar, in an outpost that was once intended as an Alliance base during the war. The Resistance was a splinter group from the Republic's military and operated wholly independently of the Republic chain of command. The Republic quietly tolerated Organa's activities,^[12] as she pursued evidence that the First Order was violating the Galactic Concordance, while some members of the Galactic Senate secretly supported her actions with their funding and sympathies. The Resistance went into combat against the First Order on a few occasions and even exposed the New RepublicsenatorErudo Ro-Kiintor as a First Order agent.^[24]

FollowingOperation: Sabre Strike, General Organa knew that the Resistance would need more help, so she hoped to find her missing brother,Jedi MasterLuke Skywalker, who had gone into exile after thedestruction of hisnew generation ofJedi.^[24] Believing thatLor San Tekka held the key to finding Skywalker, General Organa sentPoe Dameron and hisBlack Squadron on aquest to find the ancient explorer. Using the information acquired during Operation: Sabre Strike, Black Squadron undertook amission toOvanis to question theCrèche cultists about Tekka's whereabouts.^[25]

Their mission was complicated when the First Order dispatchedAgentTerex to recover the information that Poe had acquired during Operation: Sabre Strike. While Poe dealt with the Crèche and Terex's landing party, Black Squadron at the urging ofL'ulo L'ampar attacked Terex'sTIE fighters andlanding platform.^[26] The fighting was complicated when twolarge winged creatures hatched from theCrèche egg and fought. Ultimately, Poe defeated Terex in physical combat and forced the First Order agent to withdraw his forces. Having obtained the information from theCrèche elder, Poe and Black Squadron departed Ovanis.^[27]

Continuing their search for Lor San Tekka, General Organa bribedWardenLuta into letting Black Squadron enterMegaloxprison on the high-gravity world ofMegalox Beta to questionGrakkus theHutt. However, Terex found his way first and managed to bribe Luta into abandoning Black Squadron inside the prison. Despite Terex's tactics, Poe and his fellow pilots managed to reachGrakkus' fortress. Grakkus then offered to sell the information to whoever got him out of the prison first.^[28] In response, Poe gotBB-8 and the other astromech droids to embark on a mission to disableMegalox space station's gravity shield. Jess's droidO-R10N was destroyed by a security droid.^[29]

When Terex hired an army of gangsters to attack Grakkus' fortress, Black Squadron joined Grakkus' posse in fighting off the rival gangs.^[29] They held out long enough for BB-8 and his team to deactivate the gravity shield. While Terex and the other gangsters were crushed under the weight of Megalox Beta's high gravity, Poe and his fellow pilots were unaffected since they wore gravity belts. After rescuing Grakkus, they convinced Luta to let them go in return for restoring control of the prison. Before escorting Grakkus into hyperspace, Black Squadron stopped Terex's starshipCarrion Spike from attacking the Megalox prison shuttles rushing to evacuate the prisoners. Having extracted the necessary information from Grakkus, Black Squadron allowed him to flee into hyperspace.^[30]

Despite outsmarting the First Order, Poe and General Organa realized that the First Order had a spy among their ranks and suspended the search for Tekka.^[30] Poe subsequently embarked on asolo mission to the Inner Rim gas giant ofPheryon to meet with theGalaxy Beacon journalistSuralinda Javos, who wanted to sell information about the First Order's illegal rearmament efforts to General Organa. During the course of the mission, the two were captured by theFirst Order Security Bureau AgentWeel. Javos managed to kill Weel and free Poe. After escaping, Javos experienced a change of heart and decided to join the Resistance.^[31]

At the request of General Organa's spymaster C-3PO, Poe along with BB-8 and the technicianOddy Muva undertook amission toKaddak to retrieve a member of theResistance spy droid network who had obtained data on the First Order including the location ofSupreme LeaderSnoke.^[32] However, Agent Terex had planted the data as part of a rogue mission to destroy the Resistance.^[33] Terex had retaken control of theRanc Gang and was determined to continue his pursuit for Poe. Poe, BB-8, and C-3PO managed to retrieve the spy droid, who turned out to be theBX-series droid commandoN1-ZX.^[34]

Poe's mission was complicated further by Oddy Muva embarking on a mission to rescue his wife,Sowa Chuan, who had been kidnapped by Terex in order to exert leverage against Oddy.^[35] Terex had forced Oddy to spy on Poe and Black Squadron. Meanwhile, Poe realized that Terex was planning to track him back to the Resistance Base on D'Qar. Poe and the droids crash-landed on adesert world in an attempt to evade Terex and his Ranc Gang.^[33] Poe's Black Squadron mates soon arrived andfought with Terex's "Uglies." The Resistance pilot L'ulo L'ampar and N1-ZX were killed during the skirmish. Terex's forces were wiped out by First Order forces underCommanderMalarus, who had been sent to chastise the prodigal First Order agent. Poe allowed Malarus to arrest Terex, and the two factions departed peacefully in an effort to avoid open warfare.^[36]

Sometime later General Organa at the height of the galactic tensions released theGrace Report to the Galactic Senate where she claimed the First Order has violated theGalactic Concordance and was building hidden shipyards, armories, research-and-development labs, and academies, detailing the fact facilities were working day and night on the massive military buildup, one far larger than the First Order would need to defend its member worlds. It also included accounts of testimony from refugees who fled from First Order space to warn the Resistance of what life is under their rule with stories about property seized, populations relocated, children kidnapped, and dissenters exterminated and accusing the Order cooperation agreements with the neutral systems being enforced by the business end of blasters as well as threatening the neutral worlds in the galactic borderlands. And that the First Order calls to civilize the galactic frontier were all but a story they told to cover their colonization of star systems.^[37]

Following a series of adventures, Organasent her most trusted pilot, Commander Poe Dameron, toJakku to find a segment of astar map that was in the possession of the legendary Lor San Tekka. Tekka gave Dameron the map, who in turn trusted it to hisastromech droid BB-8 just before Dameron was captured. The map came into the possession ofFinn, astormtrooper who defected from the First Order, and adesertscavenger namedRey. With the help of former Alliance General and famed smugglerHan Solo and his first mateChewbacca, Finn and Rey set off on a mission to return BB-8 to the Resistance. They sought the help of thepirateMaz Kanata onTakodana, where they were tracked by the First Order.^[1]

A new galactic war[]

Conflict begins[]

The Cold War ended with theStarkiller crisis; General Hux declared war on the New Republic and then commanded that the Starkiller Base superweapon be fired, it was then one massive beams of energy was fired across the galaxy towards theHosnian system which was destroyed, includingHosnian Prime and other astronomical bodies of the system as the First Order set out to takeover the galaxy.^[1]

ChancellorLanever Villecham, ResistancecommanderKorr Sella, countless senators, and all the inhabitants of the Hosniansystem were victims in the destruction of the system.^[1] In the resultingpocket nova, Hosnian Prime became a secondstar in its system.^[38] Afterward, singerHevasi Joy denounced the First Order and called for people to join the Resistance, but her words resulted in her being imprisoned by the Order.^[14]

Rising from the ashes[]

Following the loss of the senate and the Hosnian system,^[11] the Republic was virtually helpless as the First Order fleet spread across the galaxy as many Republic member worlds surrendered to the First Order without a fight. These events quickly led to the collapse of the New Republic where its surviving senators had dissolved the remaining task forces in a effort to protect their own homeworlds.^[39] The few Republic military forces that remained were completely outclassed and destroyed by the First Order, convincing many Republic member worlds to surrender to the First Order without a fight, rather than risk defeat and devastation.^[39]

In the immediate aftermath of the Hosnian Cataclysm as open war, the Resistance became a successor to the fallen New Republic, upholding the ideals of democracy and freedom.^[5] Organa's first command was to send Commander Dameron, who had escaped from the First Order with Finn's help, toMaz Kanata'scastle on the forest planet ofTakodana to retrieve BB-8 and counter the First Order's assault on the planet. Poe arrived with severalT-70 X-wing starfighters squadrons andfought the First Order off, though Rey was captured as part of the First Order's quest to find Skywalker as well. The Resistance engaged in a fierce dogfight, resulting in the destruction of many First Order TIEs and the deaths of many stormtroopers. As the battle raged on above the castle, the remaining First Order troops boarded their ships and withdrew, taking the captured and unconscious Rey along with them.^[1]

Upon arriving on D'Qar, the site of the Resistance's headquarters, they planned acounterattack. Finn had given them the superweapon's blueprints, which revealed that the base drained the energy of thesun in order to charge its main weapon, and that it required athermal oscillator, which sustained the energy on the planet, that, if destroyed, would destabilize the planet's core and implode the base. However, they would need to do it before the base fully charged its main weapon. Finn, Solo, and Chewbacca were to go to Starkiller Base, who also intended to rescue Rey from the base and to disabled the shields protecting a oscillator.^[1]

The Resistance however had some early successes with one notable example being able to liberate theColossus station on Castilon from the First Order's grip and was able toescape into deep space while being pursued by the First Order.^[40]Inferno Squad was also able to escape the First Order as large-scalefighting betweenJinata Security forces, and the First Order began inKestro, the ruined abandonedcapitalcity ofVardos, as the Order burned the city.^[9]

Meanwhile, Solo piloted theMillennium Falcon to Starkiller Base accompanied by Chewbacca and Finn and snuck into the main base and capturedCaptainPhasma, whom they forced to disable the shields before disposing of her in agarbage chute. They reunited with Rey, who had already escaped on her own. Upon arriving at the junction, Rey quickly went to work. Within a very short span of time she managed to rig the junction properly, leading to a service hatch opening upon the complex Han and Chewie were sneaking within. Han and Chewie then planned a proper strategy to make maximum use of the explosives at their disposal before getting to work. Han confronted Kylo Ren on a bridge over a large pit, pleading with his son to reject Snoke and return to the light side of the Force. However, Ren refused, and killed his father withhislightsaber, who with love, stroked Ren's face before he plummeted down a shaft as Finn, Rey, and Chewbacca looked on in horror. Ren then felt weakened and horrified by his actions. Meanwhile Chewbacca was able to injure Ren with his bow-caster and proceeded to shoot down several stormtroopers.^[1]

Chewbacca then detonated explosives on columns supporting an access tunnel that led into the thermal oscillator's conduit. Finn and Rey exited the base into the forest, but were followed by Ren in the forest and knocked out Rey unconscious, then Finn ignitedthe Skywalker family lightsaber. Ren, the grandson of Anakin Skywalker, claimed that the lightsaber rightfully belonged to him and dueled over it. All of a sudden, the lightsaber flew out from the snow into Rey's hand and begun her own duel with Ren. With the tunnel open, Dameron, entered it and began a chain reaction of explosions across the planet's surface as it imploded and then exploded. Before Rey could move to finish Ren off, the planet ruptured between where they were standing and they were separated and the stored material from the drained sun then began to expand to create a new star in the planet's place,^[1] turning the star system into a binary.^[38]

Rey, Finn, and the rest of the Resistance pilots then returned to the base for a strategic gathering concerning the map to Skywalker's location, though at the cost of Solo and many starfighter pilots. Upon their return, R2-D2 awoke from a years-long slumber and provided the remainder of the map needed to find Skywalker from an incompletegalactic map from the Imperial archives, only completed with BB-8's fragment. Rey, accompanied by Chewbacca and R2-D2, traveled to the planetAhch-To to find Skywalker, but he refused to join the Resistance, overcome with grief and shame over his disastrous failure to train Kylo Ren. Rey eventually left to confront Ren herself, leaving Skywalker behind.^[1]

Organa had afuneral to be held on D'Qar for Solo and thought that it would provide a chance to inspiretroops with the oldrebel spirit from thedays of theGalactic Civil War. Organa also took the opportunity to read out the names of the pilots who never made it back from the Starkiller.^[39] Zay had ordered Suurgav to contact the Resistance and tell them that the war was just beginning.^[9]

Survival[]

While Rey was on Ahch-To, the Resistance moved to hastily evacuate its primary base on D'Qar. Thedestruction of Starkiller Base had saved the planet from immediate destruction, but the First Order still knew the base's location, and moved to launch a conventional attack. With the exception of some small cells, agents, fighting groups, the entireResistance navy was summoned to helpevacuate the planet and search for a new home base.^[11] Knowing desperately that they needed aid, Organa dispatched Black Squadron^[41] and Inferno Squad to gather allies in the Outer Rim.^[9]

TheFirst Order fleet arrived near the end of the evacuation of the base, using aMandator IV-class Siege Dreadnought to destroy it. To give the Resistance fleet time to escape,Wing Commander Dameron disabled its defenses in a high-speed attack run before a bomber attack led byTallissan Lintra destroyed the dreadnought, defying Organa's orders to fall back. Despite the success of the assault, the entire Resistance bomber fleet was lost in the process. For his costly and disobedient action, Organa demoted Dameron to the rank ofCaptain.^[5]

In the aftermath of the evacuation, CaptainImanuel Doza and aband of Resistance fighters arrived with theColossusto retrieve coaxium from the wreckage of theFulminatrix. The Resistance effort led by Hype Fazon was able to get thecoaxium and depart as the First Order began to resume it hunt for theColossus. Senator Xiono contacted Kazuda Xiono, his son, shortly before via a special coded message and revealed that both himself and his family had survived the Hosnian Cataclysm. However, the First Order had identified Kazuda as aspy. The senator further warned Kaz thatbounty hunters would be after him.^[42] After departing, theAces who were in need of combat training, theColossus went to the mostly uninhabitedicemoonCelsor 3 to train.^[43]

After coming out of hyperspace, the Resistance fleet headed to Crait, only to find a fleet of First Order ships, including theMega-class Star DreadnoughtSupremacy. Low on fuel and supplies, the fleet was slowly destroyed as ship after ship ran out of fuel and was destroyed by theSupremacy. Kylo Ren led a TIE fighter attack that wiped out the Resistance's starfighter wing, but hesitated to open fire at the bridge of the Resistance's flagship, theMC85 Star CruiserRaddus, upon sensing his mother's presence. His escorts fired instead, killing the entire bridge crew except for Organa, who survived exposure to the vacuum of space but was rendered unconscious. With Organa out of commission^[5] and most other senior leadership, including Admiral Ackbar, dead,^[44]Vice AdmiralAmilyn Holdo was assigned to temporarily replace Organa, remaining passive about the situation, much to Dameron's irritation.^[5]

Finn and the maintenance workerRose Tico later informed Dameron that the First Order was tracking them through hyperspace. The two had devised a plan to sneak on board theSupremacy to disable the tracking device to allow the Resistance to flee to safety. Knowing Holdo would never sanction their plan, Dameron decided to keep it on a need-to-know basis. Teaming up with LieutenantKaydel Ko Connix, they covered Finn, Tico, and BB-8 fleeing theRaddus aboard a small transport as they traveled toCanto Bight to recruit a codebreaker to help get past theSupremacy's sensor grid.^[5]

As all but theRaddus fell to the First Order's guns, Holdo announced her plan to use unarmed transports to evacuate theRaddus. Furious with the decision, Dameron staged a mutiny withC'ai Threnalli, Kaydel Ko Connix, and afewothers on the ship to stop her to buy his friends more time. Unfortunately, Finn's group was discovered and captured aboard theSupremacy before they could disable the tracking device. At this time, Organa recovered and incapacitated Dameron, allowing Holdo's evacuation plan to go forward. When Dameron regained consciousness, Leia informed him that Holdo was well aware that the First Order was tracking them and thus had the transports cloaked from their sensors so they could reach Crait and wait until the enemy fleet had departed the system. Unfortunately, Finn's group's codebreaker,DJ, sold out the Resistance to the First Order, allowing theSupremacy to spot the fleeing transports and begin firing on them, wiping out all but six of the thirty. Holdo subsequently sacrificed herself to destroy theSupremacy by ramming the First Order's fleet at light speed.^[5]

During the battle, Rey boarded theSupremacy and tried to convince Kylo Ren to turn back to thelight side of the Force and join the Resistance. However, Ren refused and later framed her for his murder of Snoke after she fled the Mega-Destroyer.^[5]

The remaining transports arrived on Crait and prepared to send a transmission to the Resistance's allies in the Outer Rim. However, the First Order struck again, with Kylo Ren, now the new Supreme Leader, leading anattack on the former Rebel base. Finn's group, having escaped, crash-landed in aXi-class light shuttle after escaping the Mega-Destroyer, initially being shot at by the Resistance soldiers in the confusion, they would then join the last of the Resistance as they readied for their last stand, whose numbers were rapidly depleted by the invaders. TheMillennium Falcon, piloted by Rey and Chewbacca, arrived to help, but this still was not enough to slow the First Order's advance. As the battering ram prepared to fire, Dameron orderedall speeders to fall back as it would be a suicide run. Finn, however, disobeyed and piloted his speeder directly towards the barrel of the cannon. Unwilling to let Finn die, Tico crashed her speeder into his, saving Finn's life but badly injuring herself.^[5]

As the cannon opened fire through the main doors of the base. The Resistance realized that all of the messages sent to their allies had been received, but none had responded. Greatly saddened, Organa gave up all hope and said the spark was out with all seemed lost before Skywalker intervened via aForce projection. Organa and Skywalker spoke one last time before he went to face Ren.^[5]

Ren ordered all of the walkers to open fire on Skywalker as he appeared outside in a futile attempt to destroy him. However, the Jedi Master was unscathed, Ren then arrived on the surface and confronted Skywalker in an epiclightsaber duel, Rey meanwhile helped the remaining Resistance members escape. Before his projection faded and he died from exhaustion, Skywalker stated that the Rebellion would be reborn from the last of the Resistance, and that the legacy of the Jedi would endure through Rey. Following a remaining vulptex, having left through a natural exit. Dameron led the surviving Resistance members in search of the exit and escaped on Falcon. Skywalker passed away peacefully and became one with the Force. His passing was felt by Rey and Organa, who both noted that he was content and at peace. What remained of the Resistance retreated, on a quest to build their new Rebellion. Ren had failed to destroy the Jedi Order as the last Jedi, Rey, had survived.^[5]

Resistance reborn[]

Ventures directly after Crait[]

In a rare moment of peace, Dameron, Rey, and Finn all sat together on theMillennium Falcon, and reflected on recent events. As the group finished talking about their past adventures together and while C-3PO was translating one of thesacred Jedi texts to Rey in theMillennium Falcon, BB-8,^[41] opened a distress call from the Resistance's Black Squadron, who were currentlyaiding the strugglingIkkrukkresistance led byPrime MinisterGrist against the First Order and itssympathizers.^[45] After Poe got Leia Organa's permission to help and repromotion to commander, he got a ship loaned from Grakkus, who was supporting the Resistance after the Battle of Crait, and rescued the squadron by shooting down TIE fighters so as to serve as bombs to a Star Destroyer and trick the assaulters by bringing down the shield and using ground cannons to finish the job. This in turn earned the Ikkrukk's alliance with the Resistance,^[46] but they later retracted from helping them.^[14]

Believing an old friend,AmbassadorYendor, could help them, Organa and the other members of the Resistance aboard theFalcon traveled to the world ofRyloth. Once there, they were brought to aRyloth Defense Authority base, and, although he knew thatChancellorDrelomon and GeneralIshel would not agree with the idea, Yendor allowed the Resistance to stay at the base. However, the First Order, for what appeared to be unrelated reasons, arrived in Ryloth'scapital ofLessu. Organa continued their current plans, however, and^[14] Commander^[46] Dameron, Black Squadron, Inferno Squad, and new allies they had gathered arrived on Ryloth. After launching amission to Bracca and amission to Corellia, however, someone in Lessu betrayed them, and the First Orderlaunched an attack. The Resistance, including Organa, Yendor, and Rey, escaped the planet and regrouped at a location provided by theCollective.^[14]

Mon Cala and the Moon of Avedot[]

The Resistance then had gone to the neutral world ofTah'Nuhna who gave assistance to them shortly after the Battle of Crait, but this came at a heavy price, as this was soon discovered by the First Order who quicklydestroyed Tah'Nuhna. The Resistance themselves had retreated to itscamp on the garbage planet ofAnoat.^[15]

Sometime later Dameronwas tasked to go to theMoon of Avedot to obtain munitions that the New Republic had impounded from thepirates to help rebuild the Resistance. While General Organa and Reytraveled toMon Cala following the news on Tah'Nuhna in the hopes of negotiating an alliance and adding Mon Calamari ships to the Resistance's armada, however they were confronted byChadkol Gee, who was fiercely isolationist, and the advisor of GeneralNossor Ri,^[15] anex Separatist,^[47] but were stopped byAftab Ackbar, son of the late Admiral Gial Ackbar, who provided the Resistance withstarship,^[48] withKingEch-Char and the Mon Cala joining the Resistance, this led to the First Order to making an example of Mon Cala after learning that the Mon Calamari and Quarren were supporting the Resistance.^[49]

Black Spire Outpost[]

The Resistance later was able to establish a presence onBatuu, where they set up a temporaryencampment outsideBlack Spire Outpost which the Resistance picked largely because it had been ideal for their needs and included aDF.12 Com Turret for security.^[50] The pirateHondo Ohnaka made a deal with Chewbacca to use the ship, and hired a temporary crew to take part in one of Ohnaka's jobs, where they were tasked withhijacking a First Order train containingcoaxium.^[20] The Resistance also began to locate allies, sanctuary, and firepower. However, two weeks after the arrival of Resistance forces on the planet,^[51] the First Order's709th Legion landed onDocking Bay 9 in Black Spire Outpost under command ofLieutenantAgnon, the forces of the 709th, commonly referred to as the "Red Fury," searched the outpost for Resistancespies.^[52] Supreme Leader Ren himself presided over the search and effort^[20] totake over the the Outpost, intending to remove the Resistance.^[52]

With their presence discovered, the Resistance elected to evacuate, with aPacara base having been established by that time.^[16] Several Resistance recruits were once scrambled there alongside BB-8 to their fighters, while another a group of recruits departed from the ruins on a mission in antransport before the vessel's capture and eventual escape from a Star Destroyer.^[53]

Tevel[]

Some time later abacta production plant onTevel was liberated from First Order forces and was successfully retaken by the Resistance and theTevellan.^[54]

Minfar[]

The First Order sometime afterwent toMinfar to obtain theEcho Horn, a weapon to control theZixon but was destroyed by Dameron, Rey, Tico, Resistance members, and sympathizers.^[48]

Lighting the spark[]

At some point, the Resistance set up abase onAjan Kloss from where they operated. After abroadcast using the voice of the resurrectedGalactic EmperorSheev Palpatine aliasDark Lord of the Sith Darth Sidious that threatened revenge was sent out across the galaxy, Resistance members Poe Dameron, Finn, Chewbacca, andKlaud undertook amission to theSinta Glacier Colony, where they gathered intelligence from an ally,Boolio, who had, in turn, received the information from aspy in the First Order. The team returned to Ajan Kloss, where they decoded the intel and learned that Darth Sidious returned from his grave, was laying low on a hidden planet,Exegol, in theUnknown Regions, behind the First Order's creation, and that he and hisfollowers had built the largest fleet the galaxy had ever known, theFinal Order all as parts for the contingency of his master plan in completing the Revenge of theSith. Meanwhile, the First Order had already established contact with the Sith Lord after Supreme Leader Renacquired awayfinderbelonging to his grandfather Darth Vader fromMustafar. Rey learned from Skywalker's journals that he had been searching for a wayfinder, and decided to finish Skywalker's mission in order to find Sidious and his followers to stop them and destroy the Sith once and for all with the reluctant approval of General Organa since she knows how that if he combines his fleet with the First Order then it is going to be too late to stop him from establishing a newSith Empire but warns them of the spy's intel on how they only have sixteen hours before Darth Sidious launches the Sith fleet from theirbase on Exegol to attack the free worlds. Rey was joined by Finn, Dameron, Chewbacca, C-3PO, and BB-8 on theMillennium Falcon.^[4]

The teamtraveled toPasaana, where Skywalker'smission had ended. There, they found GeneralLando Calrissian, who had been tracking down aSith assassin,Ochi of Bestoon, with Skywalker. Calrissian pointed the team in the direction towardsOchi's ship. The team also locatedOchi's blade underground, which had ingrained on it the coordinates to theEmperor's wayfinder in theSith language. C-3PO was forbidden by Old Republic law to translate Sith, however. They used the ship to escape off Pasaana after the First Order tracked them down and confiscated theFalcon, though Chewbacca was captured by theKnights of Ren and believed to be dead. On Ochi's ship, BB-8 reactivated Ochi's droid,D-O, who befriended the group.^[4]

The team thentraveled to the First Orderoccupied world ofKijimi, where Dameron knew someone who could bypass C-3PO's programming. They ran into Dameron's contact prematurely:Zorii Bliss and theSpice Runners of Kijimi. Despite Dameron leaving the group behind earlier, Bliss agreed to help them and took them to theirdroidsmith,Babu Frik, who successfully bypassed C-3PO's programming. They learned that the Emperor's wayfinder was located in a vault in theEndor system, reasoning it to be theDeath Star ruins onKef Bir. Rey sensed through the Force that Chewbacca was still alive on Kylo Ren's flagship, theSteadfast, and the team rescued him. However, Rey learned through Kylo Ren that she was Darth Sidious' granddaughter and that they formed adyad in the Force.^[4]

The group thenwent to Kef Bir, where they metJannah and hertribe oforbak riders and learned that they were former First Order stormtroopers who haddeserted, like Finn. Rey went rogue and recovered the Emperor's wayfinder amidst the ruins of thesecond Death Star, but she was confronted by Ren who destroyed the device in order to prevent her from confronting her grandfather and destroying the Sith without him. The two fought in alightsaber duel among the wreckage in the oceans; Ren nearly bested Rey, but General Organa sacrificed herself by using her last bit of energy to reach out to her son through the Force, and a distracted Ren was impaled with his lightsaber by an enraged Rey before she realized Leia's presence. Rey healed Ren through the Force and took his ship toAhch-To, where she considered exiling herself. However, she was motivated by theForce spirit of Skywalker to confront her fears and continue on. Rey traveled to Exegol using Ren's wayfinder and Luke'sT-65B X-wingRed Five and transmittedRed Five's tracking beacon to the Resistance, allowing them to trace her route through the Unknown Regions to Exegol. On Ajan Kloss, Dameron became the new leading General of the Resistance and promoted Finn to General. Calrissian arrived on Ajan Kloss to help the Resistance; he and Chewbacca were sent to theCore Worlds on theFalcon to try and rally the free worlds.^[4]

The Resistance, led by Generals Dameron and Finn following General Organa's passing,attacked Exegol in an attempt to prevent the Sith Eternal from deploying theXyston-class Star Destroyers and forming a new Sith Empire. On Exegol, the Resistance faced the full might of theSith Eternal forces, led byAllegiant GeneralEnric Pryde. Although the Resistance was initially vastly outnumbered and nearly beaten, General Calrissian and Chewbacca arrived with reinforcements in the form of acitizens' fleet. After healing himself, Darth Sidious attacked the Resistance and galactic forces, but he was stopped by Rey, when she she deflected Sidious' lightning back towards him, causing the Emperor to disintegrate and be destroyed at last, preventing the rebirth of the Sith. While General Dameron led theair team, General Finn led thelanding team onto theSteadfast after he switched the source of the navigation signal needed for the Sith fleet to deploy off of Exegol from anavigation tower on Exegol to his ship's beacon. Finn and Jannah turned Pryde'sturbolasers against his own ship, destroying it, and with it, the navigation signal. With the remaining Sith Star Destroyers of the Sith fleet trapped on Exegol and destroyed, the Resistance and galaxy fleet retreated back to Ajan Kloss, where they celebrated their victory against Sidious and the Sith Eternal. During their retreat, the Resistance learned that their victory had inspired anuprising against the First Order by the inhabitants of the galaxy, thereby fulfilling their stated goal of being the spark to light the fire to burn the First Order down.^[4]

Organization[]

Leadership[]

The Resistance was a band ofsoldiers,pilots, spies, and other freedom fighters, who served in a struggle against theFirst Order many years after theBattle of Endor. The ultimate authority of the Resistance lay in itsGeneral,Leia Organa, who had once been a vital leader in theAlliance to Restore the Republic during theGalactic Civil War, and reputedly knew the name of every single member in her organization.^[55][12]Commanders of the Resistance carried out their duties in the belief that they would be able to restore theNew Republic and returnthe galaxy todemocratic rule.^[5]

Other members ofResistance High Command includedMajorCaluan Ematt,^[55]AdmiralStatura, AdmiralGial Ackbar, and MajorTaslin Brance.^[12] Organa'sdroidsC-3PO andR2-D2^[56] also served in the Resistance, whilePZ-4CO took command of the control center's operations with the assistance of C-3PO. Many other individuals performed tasks, such as starfighter and droid maintenance, in the Resistance base on D'Qar.^[12]

During theBattle of Oetchi, most of the Resistance High Command were killed whenKylo Ren's wingmen destroyed the bridge of the ResistanceflagshipRaddus, leaving Organa as the only survivor. Command of the Resistance then passed onto the next highest rankingResistance officer,Vice AdmiralAmilyn Holdo, who served as the acting leader of the Resistance until Organa regained consciousness.^[5]

General Organa remained the leader of the Resistance until her death^[4] one year later.^[57] Her final command was makingPoe Dameron acting general of the Resistance. Dameron promotedFinn to general as well.^[4]

Military[]

Overview[]

Like its predecessor, the Rebel Alliance, the Resistance utilized hit-and-run tactics against the forces of the First Order, the Resistance's military strategy was to merely delay the movements of the First Order and obtain irrefutable evidence of illegal military incursions into New Republic territory to present toRepublic Command.^[24] An organized group, the Resistance had a designatedrank system for members in both thearmy andnavy.^[59] The ranks were simple but often had variations. The Army used the following ranks in descending order:General,Colonel,Commander,Major,Captain, andLieutenant. The Navy used similar ranks listed here in descending order:Admiral,Vice Admiral, Colonel, Commander, Major, Captain, Lieutenant. An additional rank, lieutenant commander, was used byNien Nunb after theBattle of Crait. Rank badges with rank symbols indicated a soldier, officer, or pilot's rank. Red badges were used by the army while blue ones were used by the navy.^[12] The ranks Vice Admiral and lieutenant commander did not have a specific badge.

Militarily, the Resistance was forced to make do with outdated and aging equipment unlike the New Republic, and was so undermanned that most of its personnel were forced to do double duty as scanner technicians, droid programmers, starship mechanics, and regular foot soldiers. Owing to its lessened pool of manpower, the Resistance placed a greater emphasis on treating the wounded and returning them to duty, and as a result finding medical equipment was a high priority. Resistance troopers commonly utilized theBlasTechEL-16HFE blaster rifle and were ferried into combat onResistance transports, which were heavily modified transports assembled from varying vessels from previous wars.Gian-211 patrol speeders and an army of droids helped keep the Resistance up and running, with many robotic workers given more responsibility and independence than elsewhere in the galaxy and seen as more than just droids, which was a continuation of the ideas of the Rebel Alliance. Many protocols of the Rebel Alliance also remained in use, withcode K-one-zero signaling the evacuation of a base, which was most notably used during theBattle of Hoth. In addition, C-3POled the Resistance's droid spy network, withGA-97 alerting the Resistance to BB-8's location on Takodana.^[12]

Many members of the Resistance were recruited from the ranks of the New Republic military, such asPoe Dameron,C'ai Threnalli,Iolo Arana,Karé Kun, andTemmin "Snap" Wexley, while others were veteran officers and soldiers of the Galactic Civil War who had fought along side and remained loyal to Leia Organa. The upper levels of Resistance command is consisted of veterans of the Galactic Civil War who had remained loyal to Leia Organa. With many skilled commanders left unemployed by the Military Disarmament Act, several old rebels readily rallied to Leia's call to action. Officers, such as Admiral Ackbar were treated with great respect by Resistance personnel, many of whom existed in a generational divide, with most young "victory kids" barely in their twenties having never witnessed the horrors of tyranny firsthand.^[24] Many of the youngest kids were used to fill out the ranks of theStarfighter Corps and were recruited from localplanetary defense forces. Spirited and idealistic, many of the pilots formed a close-knit bond and were eager to bring the fight to the First Order.^[11] All members of the Resistance, including pilots, technicians, and ground crew were giveninfantry training.^[37]

As a symbol in their struggle against the First Order, the Resistance adopted thestarbird^[55] once used by the Rebel Alliance.^[60] The symbol adorned the helmets of Resistance starfighter pilots,^[56] who were known to useT-70 X-wing starfighters in combat, which were older than the New RepublicT-85 X-wing.^[61] Owing to New Republic demilitarization efforts, acquiring capital ships was near impossible. Consequently, the Resistance base on D'Qar contained two starfighter wings, code-named Red and Blue.Blue Squadron served as the primary line of defense for the base, whileRed Squadron flew as support. Commander Poe Dameron led both squadrons asBlack Leader, not as an indication of a special squadron, but to denote his specialized fighter,Black One.^[62][12]

Resistance Army[]

Due to the limited manpower and resources of the Resistance, personnel in both the Resistance army andResistance navy sometimes rotated roles. The core of the Resistance army were theResistance troopers, but the army also counted with specialized units, such as therocket-jumpers,Wookiee Warriors,medics, andscouts. During battles, the army was led by militaryofficers. The rarity of skilled personnel led to army and navy often switching service branches. One example was the doingevacuation ofD'Qar, where thesoldiers present on theMC85 Star CruiserRaddus were assigned to shipboard security asbridge guard. A short time later, the navy repaid the favor, when thepilots flew armyV-4X-D ski speeder during theBattle of Crait. The Resistance army would use severalartillery emplacements, including theV-120 artillery emplacement, theV-232 artillery emplacement, and theDF.12 Com Turret. The army are equipped withplanetary shieldgenerators. The Resistance army had several vehicles in their possession, includingV-4X-D ski speeders,Gian-211 patrol speeders, and old ImperialAll Terrain Scout Transports. Resistance army personnel were equipped withblaster pistols andblaster rifles. Blaster pistol models used by the army includedDT-15 blaster pistols,Glie-44 blaster pistols, andDH-17 blaster pistols. The Resistance also had a fewNN-14 blaster pistols. Rifles used wereEL-16 blaster rifles,EL-16HFE blaster rifles,DH-17 blaster rifles, and"Roba" M-45 repeating ion blasters. Members of the Resistance army were also outfitted withthermal detonators,comlinks,TE4.4 field quadnoculars, and RM-45 ammunition and tool pouches.

Resistance navy[]

The Resistance navy employed the use of several varieties ofcapital ships andfrigates. Such variants of capital ships included the MC85 Star Cruiser (The Raddus), as well as theMC80AHome One Type Heavy Star Cruiser (Home One), a variant of theMC80 Star Cruiser (Echo of Hope), aMC95 Star Cruiser (Aftab Ackbar's starship). The Resistance navy made use of two frigate variants, such as 4Nebulon-C escort frigates (Anodyne), and 3 hybridVakbeor-class cargo frigate (Vigil). The Nebulon Cs were used as escorts and medical cruiser while the Vakbeor Frigates were used as cargo ships. The Resistance navy also made use of smaller craft during its fight against the First Order, making use of at least three model types ofcorvettes;twoCR90 corvette (Tantive IV), fourFree Virgilla-class Bunkerbuster (Ninka), and oneSphyrna-class Hammerhead corvette (Sterdic Star). The Resistance also used a class ofbomber, theMG-100 StarFortress SF-17. TheMillennium Falcon,Jungle X-hopper, as well as a stolenXi-class light shuttle, and a stolenGriffin-class light shuttle were also vessels that were used by the Resistance. The Resistance navy made use of several types of transports throughout its history, such as theGR-75 medium transport, theResistance transport pod, theResistance transport, theIntersystem Transport Ship^[63] theU-55 orbital load-lifter,YC-123B transport hauler, and a stolenAAL-1971/9.1 Troop Transport was used at one time by forces loyal to the Resistance. The Resistance navy deploy a variety ofstarfighters. Such starfighters included theRZ-1 andRZ-2 A-wing interceptors, theBTL-S3 Y-wing Starfighter,BTA-NR2 Y-wing starfighter,B-Wing Fighter, theHH-87 Starhopper, theT-65B,T-85, andT-70 X-wing starfighters, theZ-95 Headhunter, theAlpha-3Nimbus-class V-wing starfighters, and in certain situations, stolenTIE/sf space superiority fighters. The Resistance also used Clone Wars-era starfighters, such as theAggressive ReConnaissance-170 starfighter,V-19 Torrent starfighter, theClone variant of the Z-95 Headhunter, and theEta-2Actis-class light interceptor.

Resistance space stations[]

Resistance SpyKazuda Xiono ledTeamColossus toliberate theColossus, an old Imperial fuel station. The commanding officer of the station wasCaptain Doza. Upon receiving a distress signal fromLando Calrissian, theColossus promptly joined in thedecisive battle atExegol to combat theSith Eternal forces. Among the battle's other participants wereYeager's ship,Blue Ace, and theFireball, the last of which was piloted by Kazuda Xiono.

Foreign relations[]

As a splinter group, the Resistance had a tense relationship with its main sponsor, theNew Republic, which wanted to avoid war with the First Order even as the Order violated the terms of theGalactic Concordance. Resistance members, like Leia Organa and Poe Dameron were frustrated with the Galactic Senate's slow decision-making process and unwillingness to take action against the First Order.^[12][24] While theNew Republic Defense Force officially tolerated the Resistance,^[12] some military commanders likeMajorLonno Deso disliked the Resistance for allegedly exaggerating the threat posed by the First Order. While the Republic believed that the First Order were a minor but troublesome Imperial remnant that exaggerated their strength and power, the Resistance saw the Order as a threat to the New Republic and the galaxy.^[24] Some in the New Republic saw the Resistance as extremists,^[64] and others regarded General Organa, who had been sidelined from thepolitical process by a new generation of political leaders,^[65] particularly after the revelation of her father beingDarth Vader,^[18] as an alarmist at best and a warmonger at worst.^[12] Nonetheless, the cash-strapped Resistance relied on the support of some sympatheticsenators who discreetly channeledcredits,ships, equipment, and recruits to the small, secretive military force.^[66]

Due to its efforts to resist the First Order's advances, the military junta identified the Resistance as one of its main obstacles to galactic domination and tried unsuccessfully to destroy its base on D'Qar with Starkiller Base.^[1] When the First Order finally managed to destroy the base, the Resistance was able to successfully escape.^[5]

Behind the scenes[]

The Resistance was created for the2015 filmStar Wars: Episode VIIThe Force Awakens. Its name was first revealed atCelebration Anaheim inApril 2015^[67] and made its first appearance in the prologues and epilogues of theJourney toStar Wars: The Force Awakens young readers novelsMoving Target: A Princess Leia Adventure^[55] andThe Weapon of a Jedi: A Luke Skywalker Adventure.^[56] ActorOscar Isaac, who portrayed Resistance pilot Poe Dameron in thesequel trilogy, compared the Resistance toguerrilla fighters.^[68]
