Wilhuff Tarkin watches as a group ofImperial weapons technicians are sucked out to die in realspace as punishment for disobeying orders.
Realspace,[1] also callednormal space,[2]space-normal to theChiss,[3]star-space to theKiljispecies,[4] or simplyspace,[5] was the dimension in which all ofthe galaxy's residents lived. The vast majority of space was avacuum, a depressurized volume devoid ofatmosphere. The vacuum of space was fatal to many living organisms without the use of some sort ofEVA suit and was unable to sustainfire.[6] Because travel usingsublight engines within realspace was slow, sentients found a technological way to access the shadow dimension known ashyperspace. Astarship equipped with ahyperdrive would "jump" from realspace into hyperspace, and "revert" from hyperspace to realspace.[1]
Species that could survive in the vacuum of space includeexogorths[7] andCylo'scyborgwhale-ships.[8]Neebrays could survive innebulae, such as theKaliida Nebula.[9] As well as being able to survive in space, thepurrgil were capable of traveling through hyperspace.[10]
Manydroids were able to operate in space.Astromech droids were exposed to the vacuum of space when conducting repairs outside the hull of a starship[11] and when inserted into the astromech socket of astarfighter.[12]KX-series security droids could also survive in the vacuum of space.[13] Battle droids, used by theConfederacy of Independent Systems during theClone Wars, occasionally sat on the outside of ships, such as pod-hunting shuttles.[14]
