Reactor shafts werecavernous, cylindricalgas storage areas located deep in the center ofCloud City, an airborneTibanna gasmining colony in theatmosphere of theOuter Rimgas giant,Bespin.

Description[]

Used as part of theTibannagasmining operation of the airbornemetropolis,Cloud City on thegas giant,Bespin, reactor shafts deep in the center of the city stored gas mined from theplanet'satmosphere.Tractor beams forced gas from Bespin's lower atmosphere through an opening at the bottom of the city'sreactor bulb, where it traveled up through thereactor stalk, and finally into one of several reactor shafts. The gas was held there at low-pressure before being purified by aprocessing vane suspended inside the shaft.[1]

History[]

Sometime after theRebel Alliance'sdefeat onHoth,Luke Skywalker encountered and engagedSith LordDarth Vader in alightsaberduel inside one of Cloud Ciy's processing vanes.[2] Their fight eventually led them out onto the vane'ssensor balcony, exposed to the low pressure gas of the reactor shaft,[1] where Vader dismembered Skywalker and revealed to him that he was hisfather. Choosing todie rather than join thedark side ofthe Force,[2] Skywalker let go of the end of the balcony and fell into the depths of the shaft. Within moments, he was sucked up by an exhaust pipe and was left hanging onto aweather scanner vane on the outside of the city.[1]
