The reactor core of the Death Star II.
Areactor, also called amain reactor orreactor core, was a central power-generation device that was used inspace stations and other spacefaring vehicles. The most common reactors included chemical, fission, andnuclear fusion reactors, and dated back to theRepublic's earliest days. These reactors often required a variety of locally procuredfuel sources, while largerstarships often utilizedhypermatter annihilation reactors, which generated vast amounts of power. Despite this, most fuel sources were hazardous to organic beings, circulating in ship systems as corrosive liquids or combustible andpoisonousgases.[1]
TheDeath Star andDS-2 Death Star II Mobile Battle Station,planet-destroyingspace stations built by theGalactic Empire, both had reactor cores that, when impacted with powerful enough weapons, would explode and destroy the station.[2][3]
Theaxial superlaser affixed toXyston-class Star Destroyers also had the power todisintegrate planets. Such immense power required it to be directly connected to theStar Destroyer'ssolar ionization reactor. Thus, severe damage to thesuperlaser would start a chain reaction that would overwhelm its host ship's reactor core and cause thewarship's destruction.[4]
