Historical information
- "This is pazaak. It's a classic from the days of the Old Republic. Easy to learn, hard to master."
- ―Vestry[6]
Pazaak was an ancient[1] game of chance in which players drew cards and tried to achieve a total as close to 20 as possible without going over. Players could alter the result of the draw by playing special cards from a side deck. Due to their similar names, pazaak could be confused with the card gamesabacc by some beings.[7] Pazaak was notably played at theCanto Casino and Racetrack,Cantonica, where players could either create a side deck at the casino's specialty store or use their own (after approval by the staff).[4] Pazaak was also played atthe Alcazarcantina on theplanetAkiva,[2] and inMaz Kanata'scastle onTakodana.[5]
According toCaluan Ematt, theShrikes and theVapetailers, two special units in theAlliance to Restore the Republic, used to hold pazaak matches over cantina chits.[8] In theAnoat sector, during theIron Blockade, theIvax Syndicate oversaw games of pazaak and other activities.[3] Later, theNew Republic assigned cards from the pazaak deck to various individuals within theGalactic Empire on whom they had placedbounties. The higher the card number, the more valuable the target. Thebounty hunterJas Emari was handed a deck of cards that identifiedGrand MoffValco Pandion as a high-value target sometime after theBattle of Endor.[2]
