"The Outer Rim is a dangerous place. Everyone is fighting for their piece of the galaxy."
Kay Vess[43]

TheOuter Rim Territories, also known as theOuter Rim,Outer Systems, or simply theRim, was a sparsely populated region ofthe galaxy located outside theMid Rim beforeWild Space and theUnknown Regions. The largest region in thegalaxy, it was home to diverseworlds and rugged, primitive frontier planets. A region that often went without a major faction holding control over it, the Outer Rim was a home topirates, smugglers, enslavers, and other criminals throughout thetimeline of galactic history.

TheGalactic Republic expanded into the Outer Rim throughout itsera of governance, making major progress during the so-calledHigh Republic Era, only for dangers like theNihil marauders andDrengir crisis to hinder the expansion efforts. Inequalities between the richerCore Worlds and the poorer Outer Rim Territories set the stage for resentments that fed several conflicts through the history of the galaxy, including theClone Wars as well as theGalactic Civil War. Later, the Outer Rim became a major theater of conflict during theCold War and ensuingFirst Order-Resistance War.

With the formation of theGalactic Republic and the bustlingCoreplanet ofCoruscant beinghomeworld to the pioneeringhumanspecies,[34]galactic expansion occurred along trailblazing newhyperspace routes emanating outwards from the Core Worlds, withcolonists heading towards the Outer Rim in search of opportunities and a better life.[45] Owing to economic and legal restrictions, coupled withpolitical repression, many chose to live beyond the civilizing grasp of the Core.[2]Navigational beacons set up by Republic survey teams such as in theTertiary Usaita system aided travelers heading towards thegalactic periphery.[46]

Located on the Coreward edge of the Outer Rim,[47] the planet ofAnaxes helped to protect the Core Worlds from attack.[35] Eventually, tensions arose between the Republic and its Jedi allies over the warrior culture of the Outer Rim world ofMandalore, leading to adestructive conflict that ultimately saw the theft of theDarksaber from theJedi Temple.[48] While theSith eventually collapsed from continuous infighting,Darth Bane secretly survived and enacted theRule of Two, while he and otherSith Lords were buried in theValley of the Dark Lords onMoraband.[49]

Republic Era[]

Height of the Republic[]

Expansion and its troubles[]

The Galactic Republic remained one of the dominant galactic powers of themillennium. Though eventually trade and galactic commerce boomed between the Core and Outer Rim Territories,[30] the Outer Rim was difficult to navigate and dangerous during theHigh Republic Era.[50] Arush for new hyperspace routes erupted, with both private parties and the Republic itself looking for new lanes. At the same time, the planets ofEiram andE'ronoh were caught in aforever war[51] that brought strife to the Outer Rim;[52] refugees fled across theEiram system's side of the Rim[51] while food and fuel shortages impacted the entire region.[52] In venturing into the Rim to help the Republic's expansion, theJedi Order also hoped to meet new communities and introduce itself as a group they could approach for help. Its exploration, however, brought the Jediinto contact with thePath of the Open Hand cult on the planetDalna, which saw theGreat Leveler unleashed against the Jedi.[51]

Supreme ChancellorOrlen Mollo, having come from the Rim, better understood its troubles and cultures than fellowChancellorKyong Greylark and thus traveled across it, providing on-the-ground aid while Greylark remained with theGalactic Senate on Coruscant. Despite the Jedi Order and Mollo's united efforts to create a peace between both planets,[53] theBattle of Jedha brought about the collapse of the Eiram-E'ronoh peace effort.[54] The rivalry between the two worlds would not be settled until theEiram–E'ronoh crisis.[55] Later, Supreme ChancellorLina Soh sought to bring the outer worlds into the Republic[56] like Mollo and Greylark before her.[53] To accomplish her goals, she establishedoutreach programs. She also requested the Jedi Order expand its outreach as well, andSenatorIzzet Noor ofSerenno voiced the needs of the majority of the Outer Rim in theGalactic Senate. Traveling to the Outer Rim throughhyperspace aboard transport ships like theLegacy Run, many settlers left the overpopulated Core andColonies to make new lives for themselves, hoping to earncredits and make a future.[56]

Part of the Outer Rim became known as theGalactic Frontier,[55] which was also home to a guiding station known asStarlight Beacon. Even as Starlight was being constructed, the Outer Rim was considered a place of challenges; these challenges proved to be more deadly than exciting.[56] RepublicJudicial Forces and the Jedi Order enforced order throughout the galaxy, preventing a major galactic war forcenturies.[30] During the High Republic Era, theRepublic Defense Coalition also helped patrol the Rim.

Rise of the Nihil[]
"Let them try their best. They'll beg for help, they'll turn to Corellia, they'll look high and low for solutions. But we've blocked them at every turn. They won't be able to prevent the full, complete destruction of Starlight Beacon. After that, none will be able to deny that the Nihil are the true masters of the Outer Rim."
―Marchion Ro during the destruction of Starlight Beacon[57]

Following theGreat Hyperspace Disaster, the Outer Rim was effected by theEmergences, forcing Soh toblockade hyperspace routes into the Rim, which impacted many worlds in the region. She did not end the blockade until theNihil were assumed defeated in theBattle of Kur.[56]

Led by theEye of the NihilMarchion Ro, the Nihil opposed the expanding Republic, seeing themselves as being truly free. After their assumed defeat, the Nihil began to launch their raids on a galaxy-wide scale, instead of simply remaining in the Outer Rim.[56] At the same time, the Republic was faced with theDrengir crisis, in which theDrengir species began to spread and destroy everything in their path.[58] After thedestruction of Starlight Beacon and with thedeployment of the stormseeds, Ro declared[59] ten sectors of the Outer Rim to be under Nihil control,[60] forming theOcclusion Zone[61] he called "Nihil space."[59] The conflict came to its end with theBattle of Eriadu andmission to Planet X[62] of228 BBY[63] while the High Republic Era itself came to a close around100 BBY.[64]

Fall of the Republic[]

The Battle of Geonosis rages.

The Battle of Geonosis rages.

Several years before theClone Wars, those in the Outer Rim eventually came to believe themselves victims of economic and social injustices, asJudicials were often withheld in intervening in Outer Rim affairs after many far-flung worlds refused to provide the Core with profitable deals. Harassed by numerouspirates and lacking protection from a federal military, the Outer Rim world ofEriadu formed theOutland Regions Security Force for the protection of theSeswenna sector. Funded by off-world loans and composed of an amalgam ofships, it received weapons from armsmerchants who had for centuries been ignoring a Republic ban on the sale of weapons to member worlds. Initially lacking major success, it came to the forefront afterWilhuff Tarkin joined itsanti-piracy task force, in which he was able to significantly reduce pirate raids throughout neighboring systems.[30]

With the monolithicTrade Federation slowly encroaching on the Outer Rim and the perceived weakness ofSupreme ChancellorFinis Valorum, who was already embroiled in numerous scandals and unable to bring the growing corruption in the Galactic Senate under control,Governor Tarkinof Eriadu turned Valorum from investigating atrade summit in an effort to weaken his authority. Ending in a disaster, the summit hastened the Trade Federation'sInvasion of Naboo over the recently proposed taxation of theFree Trade Zones and disputes overplasma exports.[30]

With increasing dissatisfaction over years of neglect from the Core Worlds, dashing political idealistCountDooku managed to foment political turmoil on worlds such asKashyyyk,Sullust andOnderon. He eventually hijacked aHoloNet station in theRaxus system to voice his opinion. This precipitated theSeparatist Crisis, which would see thousands of worlds leave the Galactic Republic and join the growingConfederacy of Independent Systems.[30]

The Republic and Separatists made advances throughout the Outer Rim, making it a battlefront for clones and droids.

The Republic and Separatists made advances throughout the Outer Rim, making it a battlefront for clones and droids.

After theFirst Battle of Geonosis, the deadly three-year Clone Wars engulfed the galaxy and resulted in billions dead on both sides of the conflict.[66] The Republic was forced to raise theGrand Army of the Republic to combat the Separatist threat, with the war grounding on until theOuter Rim Sieges. At one time during the sieges, the Separatistsinvaded Anaxes, which hosted amajor shipyard for the RepublicNavy.[67] Later, Skywalker, theClone CaptainRex, and the eliteClone Force 99 discovered that theTechno UnionForemanWat Tambor was using the capturedclone trooperEcho to unconsciously provide strategies to the SeparatistcommanderAdmiralTrench.[68] Afterrescuing Echo, Skywalker and theclones devised a successful counter-strategy which led to the defeat ofSeparatist forces on Anaxes. The victory allowed Anaxes to continue to produce warships for the Republic war effort.[69]

The war continued until thedeath of theSeparatist CouncilonMustafar. Meanwhile, ChancellorPalpatinetransformed the Republic into theFirst Galactic Empire, wiping away the thousand-year-olddemocracy—and theJedi Order—in an instant.[70]

Age of the Empire[]

"The factor that contributed most to the demise of the Republic was not, in fact, the war, but rampant self-interest. Endemic to the political process our ancestors engineered, the insidious pursuit of self-enrichment grew only more pervasive through the long centuries, and in the end left the body politic feckless and corrupt. Consider the self-interest of the Core Worlds, unwavering in their exploitation of the Outer Systems for resources; the Outer Systems themselves, undermined by their permissive disregard of smuggling and slavery; those ambitious members of the Senate who sought only status and opportunity."
―Wilhuff Tarkin, regarding the fall of the Galactic Republic and rise of the First Galactic Empire[30]
The Outer Rim was home to and

The Outer Rim was home tobounty hunters andsmugglers

The budding Galactic Empire increasingly attempted to take control of the Outer Rim,[30] although many worlds never fully fell under the Empire's sway, and were instead controlled by unsavory criminal organizations like theHutt Cartel, thePyke Syndicate, theBlack Sun, orZygerrianslavers.[71] Believing control of the galaxy's outer systems would stabilize and secure the galactic center,Galactic Emperor Palpatine oversaw the buildup of theImperial Military and ruthless quashing of dissent and remainingSeparatist holdouts across the Outer Rim.[30] Worlds such asJelucan andLothal saw Imperial occupation and development, often leading to rampant pollution and industrialization to support the Imperial war machine, while men and women were conscripted into theImperial Army andNavy.[66] A "five-year plan" was implemented for numerous Imperial-occupied worlds under the supervision of theImperial Outer Rim High Command.[72][73] In the farthest reaches of the Outer Rim, the Empire barely bothered to patrol its territory, and local citizens' militias took it upon themselves to protect friendlyconvoys.[34]

The Empire was never able to fully control the Outer Rim, but often utilized its worlds as testing grounds for new biological weapons and as a source of labor,[65] brutallywiping out theLasat species of the Outer Rim world ofLasan,[72] exploiting the nativeTwi'lek species ofRyloth by rounding up native villagers for slave labor,[74] and murdering nearly all theGeonosians.[75]

Seeking to embody the spirit of theTarkin Doctrine, the Empire oversaw the construction of the firstDeath Star overGeonosis[30] andexterminated the native Geonosian population.[76]Grand Moff Tarkin was tasked with imposing order in the Outer Rim Territories, being promoted to Governor of the Outer Rim.[77] After limiting the HoloNet of various Outer Rim worlds to Imperial use five years after the formation of theNew Order, many dissatisfied systems viewed the embargo as the unofficial start of the Imperial conquest of the Outer Systems.[30]

In10 BBY,[78]Han Solo,Chewbacca,Qi'ra,Tobias Beckett, and the droidL3-37 disrupted a Pyke Syndicatespicemining operation onKessel during amission to acquirecoaxium for theCrimson Dawncrime lordDryden Vos. While fleeing Imperial forces, Solo managed to make theKessel Run aboard theMillennium Falcon in less than thirteenparsecs, beating previous records. Later, Solo, Qi'ra, and Chewbacca joined forces withEnfys Nest'sCloud-Riders todefeat Vos' Pyke Syndicate forces onSavareen. Vos and Beckett also met their ends at the hands of Qi'ra and Solo respectively.[79]

At some point, Anaxes wasdestroyed in a cataclysmic event. The planet was reduced to anasteroid field which included the formerRepublic Military baseFort Anaxes. Fort Anaxes was situated on the asteroidPM-1203.[80] Eventually, Fort Anaxes was used as a supply station for members of the rebellion.[81] Thefollowing year,[82] theGreat Jedi Purge survivorKanan Jarrus and hisapprenticeEzra Bridger were involved in askirmish withthe Grand Inquisitor at PM-1203.[83]

Galactic Civil War[]

"The Empire has let the Outer Rim run wild for too long, Sutha. The Rodian was overly disruptive. If there are to be… other active powers, they should be ones with whom the Empire has an understanding."
―Darth Vader[84]

During the Imperial Era, several rebel cells emerged throughout the Outer Rim, includingHera Syndulla'sSpectres,[77] thePhoenix Cell,[85] andGeneralJan Dodonna'sMassassi Group.[86] Following the suppression of theBatonn insurgency,Grand AdmiralThrawn was tasked with eliminating rebel forces in theLothal sector.[87] Despite inflicting heavy casualties on rebel forces during theBattle of Atollon,[86] the Spectres andLothal resistance group succeeded inliberating the planet Lothal from Imperial rule.[88]

By2 BBY,[64] various rebel cells had coalesced into theAlliance to Restore the Republic under the leadership ofMon Mothma in response to theGhorman Massacre. This rebel network posed a major threat to Empire and established bases on the worlds ofDantooineandYavin 4. The Rebellion won its first victory against the Galactic Empire[89] at theBattle of Scarif, which resulted in the theft of theDeath Star plans.[90]

After the Emperordissolved of theImperial Senate, regional governors were given direct control over their territories.Luke Skywalker, who hailed fromTatooine, ultimately destroyed the Empire'splanet-killingbattle station at theBattle of Yavin.[89] The Death Star's destruction kicked off a time of unrest[91] and an increase in those who doubted Imperial rule.[92] As such, the recently-promotedGrand GeneralCassio Tagge and Vader moved to keep the Empire secure,[93] with Vader promising the HuttSutha that the Empire was no longer interested in allowing the Outer Rim to run wild. Having justcrippled theSon-tuul syndicate because it was overly disruptive, Vader informed Sutha that the only active powers in the Outer Rim should be those like the Hutts, as they had an understanding with the Empire.[84]

The Outer Rim Territories became embroiled in theGalactic Civil War, with theAlliance Fleet dispersed across the region and the Empire fortifying the border of the Mid Rim against the lawlessness of the outlying systems.[94] Due to its distance from the Core, unauthorized holofeeds operated in abundance in the Outer Rim, owing in part to the Empire's tentative control of the region.[15] During this time, the Empire launched a crackdown on the Outer Rim to eliminate criminal syndicates save for those allied with the Empire, such as the Hutts, whoDarth Vader had negotiated with for resources. This included an attack on the Cymorah sydicate which had been stealing from the Empire. Vader led forces to attack a station, which resulted in its destruction.[95]

The Empire's attack on the Son-tuul Pride resulted in the seizure of its credit hoards and the death of the leader,Yonak's father.[96] The Son-tuul-Pride would later be briefly reorganized under0-0-0 before being dissolved after the Empire launched anotherattack led by Lieutenant-InspectorMagna Tolvan that decimated them.[97] Many of the Empire's funding was going towards the construction of Super Star Destroyers. Some of it also helped enrich the Hutts although this was simply a side effect.[98]

A lot of crime events took place in the Anthan system which led to fighting between criminals and the Empire. After the Son-tuul robbery Vader and Thanoth worked there to find those responsible, although Vader was secretly responsible so he worked to cover it up. OnAnthan Prime there was a droid fighting den and the Empire raided it where Vader and InspectorThanoth captured Doowan who gave them the location the Dragons den on Anthan 13 where Vader killed him.[99] They used his data to find the Ante who was a major figure who sold information. Vader and Thanoth led a raid which resulted in the death of the Ante.[100] Vader and Thanoth later attacked a rebel group on Anthan 1 and destroyed them.[101]

After theMid Rim Retreat,[94] the Empire discovered the Rebellion'snew base onHoth, destroying it in theBattle of Hoth[102] and splintering the Rebellion into fragments spread across the Outer Rim. FollowingOperation Ringbreaker, roughly sixmonths after the Battle of Hoth,[94]Operation Yellow Moon allowed the scattered RebelFleet toconverge over Sullust to strike on the Empire's newDeath Star under construction overEndor.[15] Its destruction in theBattle of Endor, as well as the deaths of the Emperor and Darth Vader,[103] saw the fragmentation of Imperial authority, resulting in the gradual retreat of Imperial dominion from the Outer Rim.[65]

New Republic Era[]

Ending the war[]

"We must be cautious. Inroads to the Outer Rim are slow."
―Mon Mothma[65]

TheNew Republic, the government formed by the Rebel Alliance, admittedAkiva as the first Outer Rim world to formally join the Republic in the months after Endor.[65] TheCriigo insurrection andbattle above Desevro both occurred in the Outer Rim.[104] After the Battle of Endor, the Alliance had feared the Empire would heavily cement itself in the Outer Rim.[105] However, by5 ABY,[106] the Empire had lost control of much of the Outer Rim, with theExterior the only sector that really remained under its control.Zhadalene,Korrus, andBelladoon also remained under Imperial control. Many crime groups took advantage of this chaos to rise. Under the orders ofFleet AdmiralGallius Rax, the Empire nationalized the Imperial weapons and vehicularfactories there for the war effort. In coordination with Imperial fleets hidden in theVulpinus Nebula, theAlmagest, theRecluse's Nebula, theQueluhan Nebula, theRo-Loo Triangle, and theInamorata, Rax planned to use the three Outer Rim holdouts as a cord to strangle the New Republic.[107]

Shortly before theBattle of Jakku,PrincessLeia Organa reported that Tatooine andHoruz were in the thrall of some Imperial remnant, criminal syndicates organgsters. TheRed Key Raiders tried to take over Tatooine but wereopposed byCobb Vanth, the elusiveMayor andSheriff ofFreetown.[108] The Empire made a final attempt at a counter-offensive one year after Endor,[109] but was defeated at the Battle ofJakku by the New Republic.[66] The Empire was pushed back to a handful of sectors in the fringe of the Outer Rim, and although they only contained a small fraction of the galaxy's population and industrial base, they were nevertheless a heavily fortified final redoubt. As a result, the New Republic deemed that they posed too minor of a threat to justify the high cost in life that liberating them would require, and the Empire surrendered to the New Republic and signed atreaty ending the war.[109] The Republic then began arriving in the remaining Imperial sectors to announce the signing of the treaty.[110]

Uncertain times[]

After the Battle of Jakku, the Outer Rim was very lawless as the New Republic did not do much to control it. Due to this it was common a place for Imperial remnants like MoffGideon'sImperial remnant to hide, withbases on planets likeNevarro.[111] The world of Tatooine remained a hotbed for crime[112] but did see some changes, such as the withdraw of the Bounty Hunter's Guild. The Mos Eisley cantina,[113] formerly known for not allowing droids,[89] now featured droid employees.[113] Ousting thePyke Syndicate from the world with theBattle of Mos Espa, former bounty hunterBoba Fett established his owncriminal empire on Tatooine[112] with the goal of ruling by respect.[114]

In28 ABY,[115] New Republic member worlds includedArkanis andDaxam IV, which were aligned with theCentrist faction in theGalactic Senate onHosnian Prime. The Outer Rim planet Ryloth chose not to join the new galactic government. The planetPamarthe was known for producingpilots.[110]

First Order beginnings[]

The New Republic took steps to control organized crime by introducing new financial regulations and patrolling the major shipping lines. However, organized crime later returned to theGaulus sector and adversely affected the economy of Ryloth due to the indecisiveness of the Galactic Senate. One major crime syndicate was theNikto crime lordRinnrivin Di'scartel, which wasbased on Bastatha. Rinnrivin's smuggling activities took a toll on Ryloth's economy and precipitated a New Republic senatorialinvestigation led by Organa andRansolm Casterfo. In truth, Rinnrivin's cartel was a criminal front organization set up by several Centrist senators includingLadyCarise Sindian to bankroll theAmaxine warriors and theFirst Order'sfleet. The planet Daxam IV was thesite of an Amaxine base which housed a thousand Amaxine warriors. The Amaxines were a militia that was led by formerImperial officers likeArliz Hadrassian, who admired the Old Empire and sought to overthrow the New Republic. The organization was largely destroyed when anexplosion destroyed their main base on theExpansion Region world ofSibensko.[110]

The First Order formed around a string of industrialized worlds, which stretched fromBastion to the planetYaga Minor.[47] During theCold War, the planetD'Qar in theIleenium system hosted theResistance'sbase of operations.[109] Shortly before theattack on Tuanul, the First Order operated a miningoperation inPressy's Tumble, an artificial asteroid field in thePressylla system. The formerstormtrooperFinn and hiscommanding officerCaptainPhasma took part in suppressing astrike at Pressy's Tumble.[116]

Rise of the First Order[]

"You see, Batuu, the entire outer rim really, is lawless. Free, some say. But what freedom? To be robbed by pirates? Shot down by gangsters? Real freedom is being able to walk to the market and not worry about scum blasting you into charred bits over a few credits. To control that chaos, remind me, what do we call that?"
"Order."
"Order, very good. And what's another word for order?"
"Freedom."
―First Order Lieutenant CommanderGauge andSeezelslak[117]
The Outer Rim and the wider galaxy fell under the grip of the First Order when its military forces emerged from the Unknown Regions.

The Outer Rim and the wider galaxy fell under the grip of the First Order when its military forces emerged from the Unknown Regions.

Following theHosnian Cataclysm and theBattle of Takodana, the First Order tried to destroy D'Qar with itsStarkiller Base superweapon. However, the Resistancedestroyed Starkiller Base before it could fire itssuperlaser.[118]

Before the Resistance could complete theirevacuation of D'Qar, they were attacked by the First Order Navy. Despite destroying aMandator IV-class Siege Dreadnought, the Resistance lost severalbombers andstarfighters. Fleeing through hyperspace, they werepursued by the First Order Navy includingSupreme LeaderSnoke'sflagshipSupremacy, which was equipped with ahyperspace tracker. The Resistance operatives Finn andRose Tico traveled to the planetCantonica to recruit theMaster Codebreaker to disable the First Order's hyperspace tracker. However, theirmission went awry, and they were only able to recruit the criminalslicerDJ.[119]

After abandoning the Resistance flagshipRaddus, the Resistance evacuated inU-55 orbital loadlifters to the planetCrait. However, the Resistance were betrayed by DJ, who revealed the Resistance's plans to the First Order. Despite sustaining heavy casualties, five of the Resistance loadlifters managed to regroup on Crait due toVice AdmiralAmilyn Holdo ramming theSupremacy with theRaddus. After killing Snoke,Kylo Ren claimed the mantle of Supreme Leader and led anassault against the Resistance on Crait. However, the Resistance escaped offworld due to Luke Skywalker's final stand with Ren.[119]

By35 ABY,[120] the Resistance had established anew base on the Outer Rim world ofAjan Kloss. That same year, Supreme Leader Kylo Ren led araid againstAlazmec colonists on the volcanic world of Mustafar in order to obtain aSith wayfinder, which led him to the hidden Sith world ofExegol where he formed an alliance with the resurrected Darth Sidious, who had ruled the First Order from behind the scenes through his puppet Snoke. The Sith Lord offered Ren theSith Eternal's fleet ofXyston-class Star Destroyers, theFinal Order, in return for hunting down his granddaughter, Rey.[121]

During their quest for the second Sith wayfinder,Rey, Finn,Poe, Chewbacca,C-3PO,BB-8, andD-O traveled to the moonKef Bir in theEndor system, which was the site of theDeath Star ruins. They also encountered members of the First Order stormtrooper unitCompany 77 led byJannah, who had deserted after refusing to shoot civilians. Though Kylo Ren destroyed the second Sith wayfinder during aduel at the Death Star ruins, his mother Princess Leia gave her life to bring him back to the light side. After being healed by Rey and communing with a memory of his later father, Han Solo, Ren embraced his former identity of Ben Solo and rejected the dark side.[121]

Following the death of General Organa, Ajan Kloss served as a staging point for a Resistanceassault on theSith Eternal forces on Exegol. After the defeat of Sidious, uprisings broke out against the First Order on the Outer Rim worlds of Bespin and Endor. Later, Rey, who had renounced herSith lineage and embraced theSkywalker family, traveled to theLars homestead on Tatooine where she buried theSkywalker andLeia's lightsabers.[121]

Overview[]

"The Outer Rim is a lawless place. It is a haven for smugglers, cartels, syndicates, and all kinds of scum and villainy."
Jennica Pierce[122]

Due to its distance from the Core Worlds, the Outer Rim lacked a stable, central authority to maintain order across the vast expanses ofspace in the region throughout its history.[44] By the High Republic Era, it was considered a haven for all who wanted to avoid Republic law, becoming a region filled with anti-Republic individuals even as Chancellor Lina Soh wanted to bring the Republic into it.[56] Numerous crime families such as theHutt Clan and the Pyke Syndicate[123] operated with impunity in the region, with slavery being common despite a Republic ban on its practice.[44]

As a result, many planets remained neutral and unaligned during the era of the Republic, such asDathomir,[124]Nal Hutta,[125] andZygerria.[5] Mandalore was nominally associated with the Galactic Republic, but was not part of it.[126] The Fett Gotra was established as a new type of crime family focused on respect instead of fear.[114]
