A Tatooine moisture farm
- "Moisture farms are hot and lonely. And besides, they're all on miserable desert worlds, like Tatooine. End of discussion. Period."
- ―Luke Skywalker[1]
Moisture farms were often found on dryplanets such asTatooine orOrd Mantell, where the arid climate madewater a scarce commodity.
Most moisture farms were owned and operated by single families, spread over a range of several squarekilometers. To function effectively, moisture vaporators had to be spread a minimum distance apart to collect water; two hundred and fiftymeters was a guide on Tatooine to allow each GX-8 on theLars homestead to collect about one and a halfliters of water aday, although farms in drier areas closer to theDune Sea required a spacing of about five hundred meters.[2]
Moisture farms were risky businesses to operate. Even a small water loss could mean the difference between surviving for another season or descending into bankruptcy.Moisture farmers maintained vaporators to gather water for themselves as well as to sell to others. They also used the gathered moisture to irrigate crops such asvegetables in undergroundhydroponic labs,[2] sheltered from the hot sun (or suns, as is the case in thebinary starsystem ofTatoo).
Cliegg Lars maintained amoisture farm on Tatooine, where he lived with his sonOwen and his second wifeShmi. Owen and his wifeBeru later inherited the farm, and raisedLuke Skywalker there. Another moisture farmer wasOrin Bold.
