An individual'smilitary rank was their placement within a military hierarchy. The military forces of theGalactic Republic, theConfederacy of Independent Systems, theChiss Ascendancy, theGalactic Empire, theAlliance to Restore the Republic, theNew Republic,Imperial Remnants, theFirst Order, and theResistance all utilized military ranks in their hierarchy.

Overview[]
A military rank was an armed forces title used to denote a militaryofficer's placement within an established military hierarchy and structure. Military ranks were divided intoarmy andnavy forces, although governments such as theGalactic Empire used military ranks for other organizations, such as theImperial Security Bureau.[2]
Galactic Republic[]
Republic Defense Coalition, Judicials, and other forces[]
The Republic's enforcement agencies, such as theRepublic Defense Coalition[3] and theJudicial Department utilized ranks.[4] The RDC used the ranks ofadmiral, navalcaptain,ensign, andpetty officer.[3] The rank ofprovost marshal was used within the Judicial Department by both its leader and the leader of theJudicial Academy.[5]Judicials also used the rank of naval captain andlieutenant.[6]
Republic Military[]
TheRepublic Military consisted of multiple cadres ofofficers in at least two military branches, theGrand Army of the Republic and theRepublic Navy. The Armed Forces of the Galactic Republic consisted ofclone trooper officers operating in army and naval roles,Jedi officers, and non-clone and non-JediRepublic officers.[4] Jedi officers used the military ranks ofHigh Jedi General,[7]Jedi General, andJedi Commander. These Jedi ranks allowed for Jedi officers to lead both ground andspace forces.[4]

Clone officers used their own ranking system for their cadre.Clone Marshal Commander was acorps-level rank that was achievable for aclone trooper,[8] and was followed byClone ARC Commander[9] andClone Commander. The ranks ofClone Captain[10] andClone major followed,[11] and thenClone Lieutenant,Clone Sergeant,[10]Clone Corporal,[12] andClone Private. Clone Private was the lowest rank in the Republic Army.[13] Prior to officially graduating from training, clones used the rank ofclone cadet.[14] Clone Commander, Clone Captain,[15] and Clone Corporal were also used as naval ranks.[16]
Non-clone and non-Jedi Republic officers used multiple military ranks.Governor-General was a military and political rank within the Republic, whengalaxysector was under a state of emergency.[7]Adjutant General was a senior military rank for both the Grand Army of the Republic and the Republic Navy.[17] For the Republic Navy,flag officer ranks consisted ofAdmiral[1] andRear Admiral.[18] Following flag ranks, was the rank of navalCaptain[19] andLieutenant Commander.[20]Lieutenant was a subordinatejunior officer rank.[21] In the Republic, the rank ofmidshipman was also used.[22] In the Grand Army of the Republic, the rank ofGeneral was used,[23] as wasBrigadier General and the subordinate rank ofcolonel.[24] The rank of captain was additionally used in the military'sRepublic Intelligence branch.[5] The rank ofMaster Chief was additionally used.[14]
Chiss Ascendancy[]
Themilitary of theChiss Ascendancy contained theChiss Defense Force and theChiss Expansionary Defense Fleet. Following aChiss officer's promotion to a flag officer, the Chiss had to renounce all family ties and pledge themselves fully to the military. The military ranks ofSupreme Admiral andSupreme General were at the pinnacle of the hierarchy, and followed byFleet Admiral andSenior General, Admiral and General,Mid Admiral andMid General, and lastlyCommodore. Subsequently, senior officers ranked atSenior Captain,Mid Captain,Junior Captain,Senior Commander,Mid Commander,Junior Commander, andLieutenant Commander.Junior officers were given the rank oflieutenant, and was followed bySenior Warrior,Mid Warrior, andJunior Warrior.[25] Personnel within Chiss Academies could hold the rank of colonel. Oldercadets of the Chiss Ascendancy held the rank ofSenior Cadet.[26]
Confederacy of Independent Systems[]

Thearmed forces of theConfederacy of Independent Systems maintained a composition ofSeparatist officers anddroid officers. Senior-ranking Separatist officers used multiple ranks, including theSeparatist Army ranks of General[4] and colonel.[27] Subordinate to those ranks wascommandant,[19]commander,[28] and Captain.[27] In theSeparatist Navy, the flag officer rank of Admiral was used,[29] as was captain.[30]
Droid officers, ranging fromST-series military strategic analysis and tactics droids,[31]T-series military strategic analysis and tactics droids,[32]OOM command battle droids, and standardB1-series battle droids used a variety of ranks in army and naval capacities.[1] ST-series droids could use the ranks of general[31] and commander,[24] while T-series droids utilized commander,[32] as did OOM command battle droids.[33] The commander rank was used in an army[32] and naval role.[34] B1-series battle droids used the ranks of captain,[1] lieutenant,[35] sergeant,[1] and corporal.[36]
Galactic Empire[]

TheImperial Military was the successor of the Republic Military, adopting the use of the rank insignia plaques and certain military ranks. Imperial military ranks were used in theImperial Army, theImperial Navy, theImperial Starfighter Corps, and certainCOMPNOR agencies such as theImperial Security Bureau.[2] TheSith LordDarth Vader held no formal rank in the Imperial Military.[37] Instead, he was regarded as a "lord" rather than answering to a direct rank.[38] Thanks to the power imbued within him byGalactic EmperorSheev Palpatine,[39] however, he was regarded as the informalCommander-in-Chief of the military.[37] In the aftermath of theCylo Hijacking, Vader was named thesupreme commander of the Imperial fleet[40] by Palpatine, who formally invested the powers of theSupreme Commander[41] in Vader's new position.[40] All the same, Vader still considered his rank to be "lord" and continued to hold that title.[42]

The Imperial Army and the Imperial Starfighter Corps used ground-based military ranks, despite the Imperial Starfighter Corps pertaining to the Imperial Navy. The Imperial Security Bureau used both ground-based and naval ranks.[43] These military ranks included that of general officer ranks, such asGrand General,[44]General,[45]vice general,[44] andbrigadier general.[10] Subordinate ranks includedcolonel[46] andlieutenant colonel, and rank ofmajor was also used, inferior to the colonel-level ranks.[47]
More junior ground-based ranks in the Galactic Empire included the army rank ofcommander,[48]captain, and the lesser rank oflieutenant.[49] Following ground-based military ranks included that ofstaff sergeant,[50]first sergeant,[51]Sergeant major,[17] andsergeant. The rank ofcorporal was followed by that ofspecialist andprivate.[52]
Imperial Navy[]

TheImperial Navy's officer corps had a variety of naval military ranks in its structure. Flag officers usedAdmiral of the Navy,grand admiral,fleet admiral,admiral,vice admiral,rear admiral, andcommodore. There were alsosector admirals in the navy's structure.[53] Academies could trainImperial officers tocaptains of the line,[17] andflag captains also existed in the Imperial Navy.[43] The Imperial Navy additionally used commander,lieutenant commander,[2] captain,[54][55] andgunnery captain.[56] Subsequent naval ranks weresenior lieutenant, lieutenant,[2]second lieutenant,junior lieutenant,[51] andensign.[2]Warrant Officer was another military rank used in the navy.[57] Prior to graduation,Imperial cadets could be given the rank ofCadet First Class, as well asyeoman.[2]
Imperial Starfighter Corps[]
The Imperial Starfighter Corps, despite being part of the navy, used several ground-based military ranks. Such ranks included colonel and major,[58] and furthermore used the rank ofsecond lieutenant commander, subordinate to that of major.[59] The Imperial Starfighter Corps also utilized senior lieutenant, lieutenant, andflight officer.[60]
Other branches[]
The Galactic Empire used joint political and military titles, allowing individuals to both govern an area as well as command military forces.Grand Moffs were at the echelon of the hierarchy, governingoversectors and the military assets within.Moffs followed, with each Moff governing a galacticsector. Subsequent werestar system andplanetarygovernors,[43] includingLieutenant Governors[53] andActing Governors.[61]
TheImperial Academy system utilized the rank of commandant,[62] whileCaptain-Inspector,[63]Inspector, andLieutenant-Inspector were used by the Empire'sInspectorate agency.[64] The rank ofsublieutenant was also used in the armed forces of the Empire.[65]
Alliance to Restore the Republic[]
TheAlliance Armed Forces consisted of multiple branches, each using military ranks as part of their organization. TheAlliance Army,Ordnance and Supply,Rebel Alliance Intelligence Service,Rebel Alliance Starfighter Corps,Support Services, andSector Command all used the rank of general. Subordinate ranks included colonel, major,[51] commander,[66] captain, lieutenant,[51]First Sergeant,[67]sergeant major,[10]logistics sergeant,[68] sergeant, corporal, and private.[51]
TheRebel Alliance Navy used naval ranks, such as admiral,[51]commodore,[57] naval captain,[69] commander, lieutenant commander,[70] lieutenant,[51]and ensign.[53]
New Republic[]
TheNew Republic Defense Force shared multiple ranks with the preceding Rebel Alliance. Naval ranks included Fleet Admiral, admiral, commodore,[44] naval captain,[71] commander,[72] lieutenant commander,[50] lieutenant,[72] and ensign. Ground-based ranks included general,Lieutenant General, major,[50] commander,[44] captain,[71] lieutenant,[73]Staff Sergeant,sergeant major,[74] sergeant,[50] corporal,[74] and private.[44]
First Order[]

TheFirst Order was a military junta, with its military ranks displayed onrank insignia on theirmilitary uniforms. The military ranks ofAllegiant General andGrand Marshal allowed the bearer to command both ground and space forces.First Order Army ranks included those of general,[75] colonel,[76] major,[77] commander,[78] captain,[79]first lieutenant,[80] lieutenant,[81] and sergeant.[80] The Order also used the rank ofhigh colonel.[82]
First Order Navy ranks included senior ranks such as admiral, naval captain, commander, lieutenant,[75] ensign,Chief Petty Officer,[76]Warrant Officer, andPetty Officer.[83] TheFirst Order starfighter corps used multiple ranks, including major,[84] commander,[85] and lieutenant.[75] TheFirst Order Security Bureau also used multiple military ranks, such as colonel,[83] commander,[86] and lieutenant.[87]
Resistance[]

TheResistance, was led by a general, although there were other generals within the organization.[75] Additionally, there were multiple flag officer ranks, including admiral, vice admiral,[88] and commodore.[89] TheResistance navy additionally used the rank of naval captain[88] and commander.[89] The colonel rank was used by theResistance Starfighter Corps, which also used the ranks of commander, lieutenant commander, fighter captain, and lieutenant.[88] Theground forces used major,[89] captain, lieutenant,[75] and sergeant.[83] Ensign was additionally used within the organization. Resistance military ranks were displayed onrank badges, red denoting army ranks and blue denoting naval ranks.[76]
Sith Eternal[]

TheSith Eternal used multiple ranks within theirmilitary, including admiral, naval captain,Sith troopercommander,petty officer,lance corporal, andcorporal.Allegiant General carried over from the First Order.[75]
Other factions[]
Various factions used standard military ranks for their armed forces.Planetary defense forces and localplanetary armed forces used ranks such as general, admiral, captain, and others. TheMon Cala planetary defense services andMon Calamari monarchy overall used the rank ofGrand Admiral,[90] Admiral, Commander,[91]Captain of the Guard,[28]Fleet Captain,[92] andCaptain Third Class.[93] TheGungan Grand Army, in addition to the ranks of general and captain, also used the rank ofBombad General.[6]
TheKilji Illumine, a zealousUnknown Regions faction, was led by aGeneralirius, considered to be similar toGeneralissimo. TheIllumine Kilhorde consisted of the ranks of general and colonel.[25] TheNikardun Destiny, an Unknown Regions expansionist empire, was led by GeneralYiv the Benevolent, and the military ranks consisted of generals andtactical commanders.[26] The leader of theUtapau Skyforce utilized the military rank ofAir Commodore.[11]Prince-Admiral was both a royal and military rank, used byJonashe Solo of ancientCorellian royalty.[52]
