Biography[]
Escaping Reklam Station[]
Melch was amaleUgnaught from theplanetBespin[1] who lived during theAge of the Empire. Around2 BBY, Melch was aslave laborer who worked onReklam Station on the planetYarma. Reklam Station was commanded byCommanderBrom Titus, a formerAdmiral who had been relieved of his position for losing an experimentalImperial Interdictor. There, he was given the call number "Laborer 429" and was part of an Ugnaught work gang tasked with dismantling decommissionedOld RepublicY-wing starfighters. Melch was an acquaintance ofTerba, an Ugnaught who attempted to escape Reklam Station but was imprisoned on the planetNaraka.[2]
Prior to his death, Terba informed theWeequaypirateHondo Ohnaka about the Imperial dismantling operations at Reklam Station. Melch and his fellow laborers were working at the orbital dismantling space station when Hondo and theSpectres infiltrated the station. Hondo, who could speakUgnaught, convinced Melch and his fellow laborers to help the rebels in return for their liberation. Melch agreed to shut down the furnace conveyor belt.[6] When Commander Titus inquired what was going on, Melch claimed that the conveyor belt had malfunctioned. Titus then threatened to execute the Ugnaught if he did not repair it.[2]
Melch and the Ugnaughts then helped the rebelsrefuel the Y-wings. Before they could leave, the rebels were spotted by Commander Titus, who activated the magnetic locks. Melch and several Ugnaughts then followed Hondo into the command tower in order to free the starfighters. There, Hondo and his Ugnaughts spotted an ImperialSentinel-class landing craft and offered to guard it. While the Spectres dealt with Titus and hisDTS-series Dismantler Droids andstormtroopers, Melch, his Ugnaught comrades and Hondo escaped aboard the landing craft and headed intospace. The Spectres escaped on the Y-wings with the help of theirPhoenix Cell allies.[2]
Mission to Wynkahthu[]

Melch, Ezra, Azmorigan, Zeb, and Hondo
Later, Melch and his fellow Ugnaught crew took part in amission to raid anImperial cargo ship under the leadership of Hondo and his new business partnerAzmorigan, acrime lord. Working together, Hondo and Azmorigan disabled the cargo ship withion mines. However, the ship drifted into the planetWynkahthu and was trapped in an atmospheric storm. Melch and his fellow Ugnaught crew then tried to board the ship. However, his comrades were lost due to the dangerous atmospheric conditions and only Melch survived. Hondo then abandoned him and fled offworld.[3]
Melch was bitter that Hondo had left him to die and hid within the Imperial cargo ship, whose power plant had been knocked out. Later, Hondo and Azmorigan returned withEzra Bridger andGarazeb Orrelios, two members of the Spectres. Upon seeing Hondo, Melch attacked his boss and punched him several times before being restrained by Ezra. Ezra quickly recognized him as one of Hondo's Ugnaught crew he had encountered at Reklam Station. At Zeb's insistence, Hondo told Zeb and Ezra that he had made an earlier attempt to raid the Imperial ship and had abandoned his Ugnaught crew. Hondo won back Melch's loyalty by offering him a two percent share of the treasure.[3]
After the Spectres reached the cargo bay and reactivated the ship's power, Melch helped Hondo to carry some pieces of crates containing treasure. The Spectres insisted on loading their cargo ofproton bombs first in return for helping Hondo and Azmorigan. When the rebels and their confederates came under attack fromDT-series sentry droids, Melch hid inside Hondo's treasure box. He realized that Hondo only cared for himself despite his rhetoric about regarded his crew as his "sweet, fragrant family." This allowed him to survive the destruction of the Imperial cargo ship, which crashed into a vortex.[3]
Once aboard the Spectres' shipGhost, Melch surprised Hondo and Azmorigan by revealing that he had hidden himself inside the chest. While Hondo was disappointed, he remarked that friendship was the treasure he had discovered that day. Hondo then hugged Melch but the Ugnaught punched him, indicating that he did not believe the Weequay pirate's words. Despite his mistrust of Hondo, he accompanied his captain and Azmorigan back aboard their ship.[3]
Helping Ezra[]
Melch and Hondo later wound up at the modifiedAT-AT walkerJoopa Base on the planetSeelos. Later, he along with Hondo, theClone commandosGregor andWolffe volunteered to help Ezraliberate his homeworld of Lothal from the Empire. After traveling through the Imperial blockade, Melch and Hondo manned the guns of Hera's freighterGhost, shooting down two Imperialpatrol transports above theLothal cliff dwelling, which served as theLothal resistance group base. Melch helped the Spectres and Lothal resistance defeat Governor Pryce's forces at the base.[4]
Liberation of Lothal[]
Together with Hondo, Melch helped the crew of theGhost liberateLothal. Disguised as prisoners, Melch and the other rebels infiltrated theDome, the center of Imperial power on Lothal, using the captive Pryce to secure landing rights.[5]
Melch played a role in helping the rebels to capture the Dome's command center when he allowed Zeb to hurl him onto thetransparisteel canopy above the command center. While the guards were distracted, Ezra and the other rebels stormed the command center and forced their surrender. With his mission accomplished, Melch slid off the window.[5]
WhenGrand AdmiralThrawn returned aboard theImperial Star DestroyerChimaera and bombarded Lothal'sCapital City, Melch assisted in the defense of the command center. He slipped out of the ceiling hatch behind the besieging stormtroopers and shot one of the stormtroopers before leading them on a chase. Zeb took out the remaining sentry while Melch pursued the other troopers.[5]
Later, Melch resurfaced while being pursued by a stormtrooper in the north tower's power terminal. There, he encountered Hondo, Rex, and Ketsu who were attempting to restart the power terminal in order to reactivate the Dome's shield generators. Rex managed to shoot the pursuing stormtrooper while Melch exchanged fire with the other stormtroopers in the north tower. However, Melch was struck by a blaster bolt. A distraught Hondo then shot the remaining stormtroopers in revenge. Attending to Melch, Hondo chastised Melch for forgetting that he was not a hero but a pirate. Fortunately, Melch had only been stunned and the two friends celebrated.[5]
After a pod of purrgil took Ezra and Thrawn away with theChimaera, Melch and his rebel comrades took the Dome, which turned out to be a mobileImperial Planetary Occupation Facility, into Lothal's upper atmosphere. Following a gun battle with Imperial troops, Melch and the other rebels evacuated aboard theGhost. Once airborne, the rebels detonated a set ofdetonators, destroying the Dome. This completed the Liberation of Lothal.[5]
Personality and traits[]
As an Ugnaught, Melch spoke Ugnaught, and had a diminutive physique and porcine features. He also had a large redtattoo on the left side of his face. As an enslaved laborer, Melch had little love for the Empire and was willing to help Hondo and his rebel allies steal Y-wing starfighters in return for his freedom.[2] Melch squealed when he talked. He was infuriated when Hondo abandoned him and his crew and left them to die. However, he easily forgave his master when Hondo offered him a two percent share of the treasure.[3]
Despite Hondo's rhetoric about loving his crew like his family, Melch did not believe Hondo. On one occasion, he smuggled himself inside a cargo chest to preempt Hondo leaving him behind. On another occasion, he punched Hondo in the chest when the Weequay pirate boasted about valuing friendship. At times, Melch was prepared to use violence to display his anger and disagreement with Hondo.[3]
Despite this, Hondo did care about him, as seen by how he was overjoyed to see that Melch had survived being shot during the Liberation of Lothal.[5] Melch's loyalty to Hondo led him to follow his captain on a mission to help Ezra liberate Lothal. Melch was a good marksman and managed to down a patrol transport[4] and shoot several stormtroopers during the Liberation of Lothal.[5]
