Meedro

Meedro was anEwokwarrior of theBright Tree tribe who lived on the borders ofBright Tree Village on themoonEndor. In4 ABY, he fought against theGalactic Empire alone while the rest of the tribe fought them alongside theAlliance to Restore the Republic during theBattle of Endor. After the battle, the tribe's leader,ChiefChirpa, called a meeting to discuss how the tribe should interact with outsiders in the future and Meedro attended, stating that outsiders brought danger with them and so the Ewoks should be wary.

Wicket Wystri Warrick, ayoung Ewok who had disagreed with Meedro in the meeting, asked to check traps with him afterwards and the pair came across atemptor caught in a trap together. The temptor broke free and attacked Warrick until Meedro stabbed its tail and forced it to flee. After checking Warrick was unharmed, Meedro and the younger Ewok headed back to Bright Tree Village, where they discovered a group of Imperials introducing themselves to the village. Chirpa cautiously welcomed the Imperials, who wereseeking anImperial weapons cache, but hisdaughterAsha Fahn attacked them. When the Imperials opened fire on the whole tribe, Warrick and Meedro burst forth from hiding and tried to intervene. The Imperials agreed to leave as long as they had a guide as a hostage, rejecting Meedro's attempt to volunteer and instead taking Warrick. Meedro and Fahn then set out together on abordok to rescue Warrick.

Upon reachingEndless Lake, the pair dismounted and Fahn summoned acondor dragon to ride. Meedro was initially frightened of thebeast, but mounted it with Fahn and flew across thelake, finding the Imperials and Warrick battling theGorax known as theGreat Devourer on the other side. The two Ewoks joined the fray, eventually allowing Warrick to escape and gain help from a group ofYuzzum who brought the fighting to a standstill. Warrick tried to convince the Imperials to leave peacefully, but after the Imperial leaderTern Koyattakilled his unarmed allyKhu Fornot, Meedro was outraged and attacked Koyatta with adagger. Warrick convinced Meedro to spare Koyatta, who was taken away as acaptive by the other Imperials. Meedro, Fahn, and Warrick then burned the Imperial weapons cache and Meedro and Fahn departed to travel theforest together.

Biography[]

Life on the edge[]

Meedro was anEwok^[1]warrior^[2] of theBright Tree tribe on theforestmoonEndor. He lived on the borders ofBright Tree Village, making no camp andsleeping wherever he lay his head in woods, far from thetreetop huts and large campfires of the other members of the tribe. He earned a reputation in thevillage as a tough and mysterious loner, with rumor spreading that he hadkilled agorax on his own. As awokling, the EwokWicket Wystri Warrick considered Meedro his hero.^[1]

In4 ABY,^[3] theAlliance to Restore the Republic arrived on Endor andfought alongside the tribe's Ewoks against theGalactic Empire, another faction of offworlders. Meedro fought the Empire as well but did so alone. The Ewoks and their allies were victorious and, after the rebels left, the tribe's leader,ChiefChirpa, called a meeting of the whole tribe in the village in order to discuss how they should treat future visitors from offworld. Warrick encouraged the tribe to cooperate with future visitors and welcome them with an open hand, metaphorically describing nature as asong that was made stronger by adding new tones.^[1]

Leant against a railing at the back of the gathered Ewoks, Meedro then spoke up in opposition to Warrick, dismissing his metaphor and claiming that outsiders broughtweapons and danger with them. He acknowledged his separation from the rest of the village, prompting one Ewok to mockingly claim he was temptingtemptors out on the borders, but pointed out that his remote home meant that he knew the benefit of being careful more than anyone. Chirpa then interrupted Meedro, stating that he had made his point, and Meedro conceded and bowed to the chief. The other Ewoks present then began arguing over whether Warrick or Meedro was correct, with some dismissing Warrick due to his age.^[1]

Tempting temptors[]

After the meeting, Warrick arranged to check traps in theHappy Grove forest with Meedro, who was surprised at the request given their opposing views at the gathering. After aday of finding traps empty, Meedro raised his surprise with the younger Ewok, who began speaking about Meedro's reputation before spotting activity in a trap net hanging in the trees ahead of them. The fuzzytongue of a temptor poked through the netting, which Warrick mistook for averkle tail and rushed forward to poke with hisspear.^[1]

Recognizing the trapped creature for what it was, Meedro called out to try and stop Warrick, but was too late, and the temptor burst from the net and lunged at the younger Ewok. After the temptor broke Warrick's spear, Meedro plunged a bident into its tail and ordered Warrick to run as the creature roared in pain. Warrick did as he was told and got to safety, but the temptor soon fled, detaching its whole tail as a distraction. With the danger passed, Meedro checked that Warrick was unharmed and then explained how temptors used their tongues as bait.^[1]

Homeward bound[]

Warrick apologised for falling for the trick, disappointed that they had nothing to bring back to the village. Meedro emphasised that Warrick returning safely was the bigger priority and the pair set off back to the village, planning to set more traps the following day. Meedro brought the temptor's tail so that he could cure it to makesupplies that he could use on the road.^[1]

On the way back, Warrick expressed how impressed he was that Meedro had not feared the temptor, asking if it had been the same when the older Ewok fought the Gorax. Meedro explained that it was not the first temptor he had faced but admitted that it would be foolish not to fear the Gorax known as theGreat Devourer. When Warrick asked why Meedro did not live in the village, the older Ewok explained his views on the benefits of living alone.^[1]

Village visitors[]

As they approached Bright Tree Village, Meedro and Warrick heard an intruder call being signaled and both rushed to the edge of the settlement. There, they crouched behind some logs to watch as a group of offworlders introduced themselves to the rest of the tribe. The offworlders were armed Imperials andbounty hunters who had returned to Endor aiming tolocate and reclaim anImperial weapons cache. Among their number were thedroids4-LOM and^[1]E-X77,^[5] both of who couldspeakEwokese, and so 4-LOM explained to the Ewoks that they came in peace.^[1] He claimed that the group were pilgrims seeking to reach a holy site and asked for refuge and passage.^[4]

Warrick and Meedro quickly recognized the outsiders' true Imperial nature based on their weapons, but Meedro cautioned that they should remain hidden to keep an advantage over the newcomers. Chirpa and the rest of the tribe also recognised the pilgrims as Imperials and were suspicious, even when 4-LOM claimed to be anemissary of theAdversary, an Ewokdeity, and warned that denying their wishes would offend the god. Chirpa elected to welcome the outsiders and let them stay, stating that any Ewok who wished to volunteer as a guide for the Imperials could do so but that no one would be forced. Horrified by this outcome, Warrick tried to move forward to stop the Imperials entering the village, but Meedro stopped him.^[4]

The Red Ghost rises[]

As the Imperials entered, Chirpa'sdaughterAsha Fahn—another pariah like Meedro who was known as the Red Ghost—leapt down from the treetops and attacked thebountyhunterZuckuss. Knowing her relationship to Chirpa, the ImperialKhu Fornot assumed the chief to be working with her and so opened fire on the whole tribe. Fornot's allies joined the attack as well and^[4] he^[6] soon had Chirpa and his other daughter,Kneesaa a Jari Kintaka, in his sights, at which point Meedro and Warrick swung into the village onvines, letting out a yell and bringing a pause to the fighting.^[4]

The conflict quickly resumed as Zuckuss attacked Fahn, with Chirpa and Kintaka fighting 4-LOM when he tried to aid the other bounty hunter. When the droid threw off the Ewoks and took aim at the chief, Warrick leapt upon his back and Meedro disarmed him with astaff, warning the droid not to mistake Chirpa's welcome as a sign of weakness among the Ewoks. Warrick eventually pinned down the Imperials' leader,Tern Koyatta, who threatened to have his forces massacre the other Ewoks with theirblasters. However, when the Imperials' trackerKoll Orvenk objected to killing the Ewoks, Koyatta agreed to leave the village unharmed if they took a guide as a hostage.^[4]

The pariah pair[]

After other Ewoks cried out for Fahn to be the hostage, as she had been the first to attack, Meedro volunteered to take her place. Believing Meedro to be too eager, Koyatta rejected his offer and instead took Warrick after learning the younger Ewok could speak someGalactic Basic.^[4] Once the Imperials and Warrick were gone, the rest of the tribe gathered to discuss what should be done to help him and returned to arguing about how they should have treated the outsiders. Fahn interrupted and demanded that they must rescue Warrick, which Meedro agreed with, chastising the others for bickering and offering to go after Warrick alone if needed. Instead, Chirpa had him wake abordok and sent both Meedro and Fahn out after Warrick on the steed.^[6]

The pair rode after the Imperials until reaching the shore of theEndless Lake, which their quarry had already crossed. Knowing that thelake was filled withdevil serpents, Meedro suggested that they might try and find araichling big enough to carry them across or convince alucksprite to swim with them. Fahn instead cried out and summoned acondor dragon, causing Meedro to panic and draw his weapon, warning the chief's daughter that thedragon could sense their fear. Fahn merely told him to relax and explained that thedragon was her friend, inviting him to join her in riding the dragon across the lake while their bordok returned to the village.^[6]

Final confrontation[]

During the flight, Meedro admitted that he was impressed by Fahn's ability to befriend a condor dragon, and she explained the difference between their lifestyles as Meedro choosing to live in the forest, while she lived as part of it. Meedro took this as a criticism, but Fahn claimed he had misunderstood and that she thought him brave, if somewhat loud.^[6] Once across the lake, Meedro and Fahn discovered the Imperials and Warrick fighting the Great Devourer outside the weapons cache. Warrick departed the fight to try and find help, but 4-LOM stopped him and prepared to shoot the young Ewok, at which point Meedro and Fahn leapt from the back of the condor dragon and attacked 4-LOM, allowing Warrick to escape.^[7]

As they fought, Fahn and Meedro mocked 4-LOM and claimed he had been easy to track. When the droid called Fahn a beast, Meedro corrected him with her name and promised that the two of them would stop the Imperials from claiming their prize or harming the Bright Tree tribe ever again. The pair then retreated into the bushes as Zuckuss opened fire on them and the Great Devourer killed the condor dragon. Fornot then emerged from the cache on a74-Z speeder bike and fired on the Ewoks, with Meedro pushing Fahn out of harm's way. Fahn then told Meedro to hide while she took care of Fornot, although Meedro warned her that the Imperial's mount was too fast and strong for them to overcome.^[7]

Fahn proved him wrong by knocking the Imperial from thespeeder bike with her spear, allowing Warrick to steal the bike. Koyatta then killed the Great Devourer and destroyed the bike while Zuckuss and 4-LOM fired on Meedro and Fahn. Fornot managed to pin Meedro to the ground and held aknife at his throat, gloating that he had been waiting for such a moment since he first landed on Endor. At that moment, Warrick called out to Meedro and Fahn, having finally managed to find the aid he sought. From atop arakazzak beast, Warrick led anarmy of localYuzzums against the Imperials, bringing the fighting to a standstill.^[7]

Standoff[]

Warrick demanded that the Imperials leave and called Koyatta a liar, which unnerved the Imperial leader. Seeing this, the rest of the Imperials and the bounty hunters began questioning Koyatta as well and eventually turned their weapons on him, forcing him to reveal that he had lied about some aspects of their mission. Before they could fire on Koyatta, Warrick disarmed 4-LOM, Zuckuss, and Fornot and declared that no one needed to die, but Koyatta ignored him and used the opportunity to fatally shoot the unarmed Fornot.^[7]

Outraged by the dishonorable murder, Meedro leapt on Koyatta with a dagger while the Imperial cried out for mercy, but Warrick called out for Meedro to stop and spare him. Reiterating that there would be no more fighting, Warrick reached an agreement with 4-LOM and Zuckuss in which they took the captive Koyatta with them as a reward rather than the cache of weapons, promising to never return to Endor again. E-X77 and Orvenk meanwhile left to peacefully commune with the Endor forest.^[7]

Alone no more[]

With the Imperials dealt with, Meedro, Fahn, and Warrick returned to the cache. Meedro suggested that they use the weapons within for their own safety, while Fahn claimed that they would only make the Ewoks more of a target. However, as they further investigated the cache the three Ewoks came to an agreement that there was no place on Endor for such unnatural machinery and that the Bright Tree tribe already had everything it needed. The trio sealed up the cache and then set it onfire.^[7]

The following morning, Meedro and Fahn parted ways with Warrick in order to travel the forest together, passing alantern bird in the undergrowth as they walked together in thesun's early light. Warrick returned to Bright Tree Village with the Yuzzum, who were soon joined by other neighbouringspecies in a gathering in the village where the different groups shared stories and discussed the unified future of the forest. Warrick later told hisbrotherWiddle Warrick about what had transpired since he had been taken hostage, including the details of Meedro and Fahn's involvement and departure.^[7]

Personality and traits[]

Alone by choice[]

Meedro lived alone on the outskirts of Bright Tree Village because he believed that it was safer to do so, believing that having to worry about others was a distraction. Although he admitted that village life would be easier, he also saw it as including vulnerabilities and responsibilities that he could avoid by not living in a group. He viewed outsiders as even more of a risk, rejecting the idea of welcoming them with openarms and believing that his lifestyle meant he best understood the benefits of being cautious.^[1]

He rejected Wicket Warrick's metaphor about nature being a song and claimed that metaphors were forshaman andphilosophers. He had a reputation in the village for being tough, but was also considered a loner.^[1] After surviving a fight with the Great Devourer, Meedro came to respect the hierarchy of the forest, believing any Ewok would be foolish not to fear the Gorax and similarly fearing condor dragons.^[6]

A change of heart[]

Despite his views on living in the village, Meedro considered himself a part of the Bright Tree tribe and always loyally served it, viewing Chirpa as a fair leader and feeling honored to watch the sun rise from within the village. When checking traps with Warrick, he also prioritized keeping the younger Ewok safe over catching food for the tribe, making sure Warrick was unharmed after besting the temptor.^[1]

Meedro also volunteered himself to guide the Imperials in Asha Fahn's place^[4] and intended to go after Warrick to rescue him, even if he had to do so alone. He was greatly impressed by Fahn's ability to call and commune with a condor dragon, overcoming his own fear once shown she had befriended it.^[6] Although he considered Fornot cruel, Meedro was greatly angered when Koyatta killed the unarmed Imperial.^[7]

Once the Imperial threat was dealt with, Meedro chose to walk the forest with Asha Fahn rather than alone,^[7] despite his views on the risks of having to worry about others.^[1] She considered him brave but loud.^[6] Meedro had darkbrownfur with white facial hair including a beard, mustache, and large eyebrows. He had light-colored skin and browneyes, although his left eye was milky white and blind due to a large scar that ran through it.^[1]

Equipment[]

Meedro wore an animalskull headpiece with its spine andribcage running down his back over a black-spotted greenshawl and green scaledarmor across his chest and shoulders. He also wore a thin brownbelt from which he hung his various tools and weapons, including a brownwooden bident, a longer bonesword, and a short gray stoneaxe with a wooden handle.^[1]

He carried a walking stick with a knotted cloth bundle at the top from which spikes emerged and used a red wrap-around sack.^[1] Meedro also used a staff^[4] and a dagger in battle.^[7] Meedro set traps including snares in the forest and claimed a temptor's tail in order to cure and make supplies for the road.^[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Meedro was created for the2024Star Wars: Ewokscomic book series, which was written bySteve Orlando, illustrated byLaura Braga andÁlvaro López, and published byMarvel Comics.^[1] First alluded to in a post on Marvel.com onJuly 18, 2024,^[2] Meedro then appeared for the first time and was identified in the comic'sfirst issue^[1] onOctober 9, 2024.^[2] An early concept design of the character was made by López^[8] and depicted the Ewok with a blue outfit rather than green.^[7]
