King Lee-Char on life-support

Alife support device was any implement that helped a being stay alive, whether its support be permanent or dependent on the situation,[2] such as surviving in settings that were polluted or otherwise not adapted to their natural life requirements.[3]

In starships[]

Life support systems made the interior of astarship capable of supporting life in the otherwisedeadly environmental conditions ofspace.[4] One important function of life support was to renew the breathable air inside the ship.[5] Other parameters included the ambienttemperature.[6]

Some crafts, like theImperialTIE/ln space superiority starfighter, lacked such systems,[7] which forced their users to wear life support chest pieces with breather tubes connected to the helmet to provide necessarygases. Similarly,Woan Barso wore avac-suit at all times becausehe did not trust the life support of hisdilapidatedcontainer tug.[4]

Individual life support[]

Darth Vader's mask incorporated life support technology because, due to his injuries, he could not breathe on his own.

Individual life support implements took a variety of forms according to the degree of dependence of the beings using them.[2] For example,Kel Dors like theJedi MasterPlo Koon only needed to wear aspecializedbreath mask and protective goggles so they could function in conditions different from those on theirhomeplanet ofDorin.[3] At the other end of the spectrum,Anakin Skywalker was so gravely injured after hisduel onMustafar that he needed anarmor offering total and permanent life support, without which he would die.[2] Similarly, during the last days of their lives, themonarchs ofMon CalaLee-Char[9] andEch-Char were maintained on life support.[10]
