After theDeath Star's destruction during theBattle ofYavin, LieutenantCiena Ree of theImperial Navy was promoted to lieutenant commander. Overview[]

Themilitary rank of Lieutenant Commander was anaval^[1] andarmy^[6] rank utilized by various militaries throughoutthe galaxy and itshistory.^[1] The rank was subordinate to that ofcommander but senior to the rank oflieutenant.^[3]

Early rebels and Alliance to Restore the Republic[]

ThePhoenix Cell—a resistance group that was part of a network of rebel cells known as "the Alliance," which later grew into the formalAlliance to Restore the Republic^[8]—utilized the rank of Lieutenant Commander. An individual who held the rank had authority over conducting their own missions.^[7] The rank continued to be used by the formal Rebel Alliance^[3] after itsestablishment in2 BBY.^[9]

Chiss Ascendancy[]

In theChiss Defense Force, Lieutenant Commander was belowJunior Commander and above Lieutenant. By the time of theNikardun campaigns, the rank had become associated withChiss officers fromGreat orRulingfamilies who were deemed not good enough to advance higher in the command hierarchy. The practice of giving mediocre officers the rank of Lieutenant Commander so as not to offend them or their families was widely known in theChiss Ascendancy but rarely discussed, rendering it as somewhat an open secret.^[10]

Galactic Empire[]

TheGalactic Empire continued use of the rank of lieutenant commander within theImperial Military. Notably, the rank was used in theImperial Navy and itsImperial Starfighter Corps.^[3] Thechief engineer of aStar Destroyer could hold the rank of Lieutenant Commander,^[11] as could aweapons officer of alight cruiser.^[12]

Galactic Republic[]

TheGalactic Republic included the rank of Lieutenant Commander within several organizations of theRepublic Military during theClone Wars. TheRepublic Navy maintained the rank and could be used by thecommanding officer of asub-capital shipbattle group that consisted of aDreadnought-class heavy cruiser and a number ofCarrack-class light cruisers. A lieutenant commander could also use a Carrack as theirflagship.^[13] TheRepublic Special Weapons Group also used the rank of lieutenant commander within its structure, and was subordinate to the rank of commander.^[1]

New Republic and Resistance[]

TheNew Republic utilized lieutenant commander within theirNew Republic Defense Fleet rank structure during the Galactic Civil War, with individuals who held the could serve aboard Republicstarships.^[4] TheResistance, a private military force born from the New Republic, utilized the rank within itsResistance Starfighter Corps.Nien Nunb held the rank during theCold War.^[5]
