"Heeded my words not, did you? Pass on what you have learned. Strength, mastery. But weakness… folly… failure, also. Yes, failure most of all. The greatest teacher, failure is. Luke… we are what they grow beyond. That is the true burden of all masters."
―Yoda's Force spirit, to Luke Skywalker[4]

Jedi Master was a rank in theJedi Order given to wise and powerfulJedi, many of whom were prominent leaders within the Order.

Only Masters were allowed to serve on theJedi High Council. A notable exception to this, however, was whenAnakin Skywalker was appointed to the Council as a representative ofSupreme ChancellorSheev Palpatine despite only being aJedi Knight.

Description[]

"Those who have undertaken the most serious study and hold the deepest devotion to the Force will achieve the rank of Jedi Master. It is more than just an honorary title, for upon achieving the rank of Master, the Order expects a Jedi to forge their own path and pursue independent studies. However, some masters might still take a Padawan, or return to the Grand Temple to educate younglings. Masters are also eligible to be named to the Grand Council as leaders of the Order. For a very select few, the title of Grand Master awaits only the most illustrious among us."
―Jedi MasterHarli Cogra[5]
Yoda was both a Jedi Master and Grand Master of the Jedi Order.

Yoda was both a Jedi Master and Grand Master of the Jedi Order.

AJedi Master was aJedi Knight who had been offered a higher ranking withinJedi Order as a result of a JediGrand Master seeing the Knight fit for the position.[2] Compared to a Knight, a Jedi Master had greater experience, greater readiness, and had shown their devotion to taking their next step as part of the Order: to be a Jedi Master was the next rank all Jedi Knights worked towards as part of their life-long devotion to studyingThe Force, but it was a long road to prove oneself worthy of the title.[6] Upon being given the rank, the Jedi Master was able to and expected to pursue their own studies, moving forward in their experience withthe Force on their own terms. In fact, theJedi High Council outright expected all Jedi Masters to do so.[7]

There were several ways for a Jedi Knight to be promoted into a Jedi Master. One way was for the Knight to successfully trainPadawans, passing on their knowledge ofthe Force[8] in order to ensure the Order survived into the next generation.[3] Alternatively, a Jedi Knight could prove themself in battle.[8] In general, those who were offered the rank of Master had undertaken serious study and held a deep loyalty to the Force.[5] When the moment called for a serious response, Jedi Masters were expected to be serious instead of acting glib.[9] Often groups ofJedi younglings would receive their early education in the ways of the Force under the guidance of a single Jedi Master. Theyounglings would then receive more directtraining under the direction from either a Jedi Knight or a Jedi Master.[2] Jedi Masters and Jedi Knights served as Jedi Generals in theRepublic Military during theClone Wars whilePadawans served asJedi Commanders.[3]

History[]

In the time of theHigh Republic, the Jedi High Council notably consisted of three Jedi Grand Masters;Xo Lahru,Pra-Tre Veter, andYoda all elected to share the role. Other masters of HighRepublic Era includedJora Malli,Stellan Gios,Sskeer,Oppo Rancisis,Yarael Poof, andAvar Kriss.[7]Ry Ki-Sakka also gained the Grand Master rank at some point.[11] As one of the oldest Jedi Masters in the order's history, Yoda,[12] over the course of his 800-year-long career as a Jedi Master, trained no fewer than 20,000 Jedi[13] and held the position of Jedi Grand Master for over 800 years.[14]

In the years of theGalactic Republic, the Jedi High Council was made up of twelve Jedi Masters, one which bore the title of Grand Master,[15] who had the power to grant Jedi Knights the title of Master, in consensus. Other prominent Jedi Masters who also sat on the Council included members, such asMace Windu,Obi-Wan Kenobi,Kit Fisto,Adi Gallia,Yaddle,Saesee Tiin,Agen Kolar,Even Piell, andShaak Ti.[16] Many Jedi Masters also took on apprentices to train in the ways of the Force, such asDepa Billaba[17] andLuminara Unduli.[18]

During the Clone Wars, Jedi Masters held the rank of Jedi General over clone troopers in the Republic Military.

During the Clone Wars, Jedi Masters held the rank of Jedi General over clone troopers in the Republic Military.

Under theJedi Military Integration Act, Jedi Masters and Jedi Knights were given the rank of Jedi General for the Clone Wars.[19] After serving as a Jedi Knight for three years during the war,Anakin Skywalker advanced to the point in his training that he felt he deserved the rank of Jedi Master, though the Council did not agree. WhenSupreme ChancellorSheev Palpatine appointed Skywalker to the Council as his personal representative, the Council reluctantly agreed, hoping to use him as a means tospy on Palpatine. However, the Council did not grant Skywalker the title of Master. Skywalker took this as both an outrageous and unfair insult, as no Jedi in the history of the Jedi Order had ever been placed on the Council without receiving the rank of Master.[16]

Years after theGreat Jedi Purge and theGalactic Civil War,Luke Skywalker attempted to train his own generation of Jedi and was considered a Jedi Master.[20][21] Following theBattle of Exegol in35 ABY,[22]Rey took up thefamily name of her mentors Luke Skywalker and[2]Leia Skywalker Organa Solo.[23] Now the last Jedi, Rey Skywalker eventually ascended to the rank of Master.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

As confirmed by editorTom Hoeler, the word "master" in "Jedi Master" must be capitalized if used with "Jedi." The word "master" on its own, however, does not always need to be capitalized.[24] "Master Jedi," meanwhile, is an honorific used among certain cultures or by certain individuals, rather than a reference to the "Jedi Master" rank itself.[25]
