"You are Jedi Knights. Responsibility. Peace. Discipline. You are the examples the galaxy looks to. Your successes will carry through the Republic and beyond. As will your mistakes. Your choices will matter, helping the Jedi maintain peace in a time of discord."
―Mace Windu[4]

Jedi Knight was a rank within theJedi Order, referring to aJediPadawan who had completed theirtraining and passed theJedi Trials to become a full member of the Order.[2]

History[]

"For over a thousand generations, the Jedi knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the old Republic. Before the dark times, before the Empire."
―Obi-Wan Kenobi, to Luke Skywalker[1]
Jedi Knights served as generals during the Clone Wars.

Jedi Knights served as generals during the Clone Wars.

In the history of the Order, a Jedi Knight was lower than aJedi Master and needed to prove themselves worthy of the higher rank.[5]

Unlike those who had that higher rank, Jedi Knights were unable to pursue their studies on their own terms. MasterPorter Engle believed that any Jedi worthy of the title of knight puttime into planningunarmed defense in case they lost theirlightsaber.[6]

Jedi Knights, like the Order they served, were guardians of peace and justice in theGalactic Republic,[1] and served in keymilitarycommand roles during theClone Wars. At the war's end,Supreme ChancellorSheev Palpatine—secretly theSith LordDarth Sidious—issuedOrder 66, declaring every Jedi anenemy of the state. As a result, theclone troopers of theGrand Army of the Republic turned against theirgenerals,[7]killing most of the Jedi.[1]

At the end of theGalactic Civil War,Luke Skywalker was the last known Jedi Knight.[8]

Behind the scenes[]

As confirmed by editorTom Hoeler, the term "Jedi Knight" should always see both words capitalized, as should "Knight" on its own if it refers to a Jedi Knight. "Knighthood" also needs to be capitalized, while "knighted" does not need to be.[9] According to the reference bookThe Star Wars Book, once a Jedi Knight had trained aPadawan of their own to Knighthood, they could then become aJedi Master.[10] This, however, contradicts the events of the novelThe High Republic: Into the Dark, where a character rises to the level of Master without passing that requirement.[11]
