- "They're good. No words needed. Perfect sync. Like clones in a way. Better. They're the best. That's why they command."
- ―Republicclone trooper commanderBly[1]
While theJedi Order was not a military organization, in times of need its members often becameJedi Generals to leadRepublic military forces.
History[]
The earliestgenerals fought in theMandalorian Wars asRevanchists, opposing theNeo-Crusader invasion. The end result was them falling to thedark side ofthe Force and forming aSith Empire.
During theGreat Galactic War and followingGalactic War, manyJedi ledRepublictroopers into battle against the reconstitutedSith Empire.
Jedi were assigned to serve as generals (some asLords) of theArmy of Light during theNew Sith Wars. Most of those still alive by theSeventh Battle ofRuusan perished in that battle.

The Jedi were thrust into the role of generals during the Clone Wars
When Supreme Chancellor Palpatine was granted emergency powers to address the Separatist threat, one of the key outcomes was the centralization of military authority and the establishment of theRepublic High Command. This reorganization also integrated theJudicial Department with the wartime bureaucracy to support the Republic’s military operations more effectively.[2]
The Jedi Order, which was technically part of the Judicial Department, was significantly affected by this shift. Traditionally serving as peacekeepers and mediators, the Jedi were now reassigned as military officers within the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) and the Republic Navy. Although the Jedi retained the formal right to refuse direct orders from the Supreme Chancellor—who now acted as Commander-in-Chief—such refusals required substantial justification. Simple appeals to “the will of the Force” were no longer sufficient, and noncompliance could result in accusations of insubordination or even treason.[2]
This new state of affairs often forced Jedi to obey orders that conflicted with their better judgment, and they could not openly question the Chancellor’s intentions without jeopardizing public trust in the Jedi Order's leadership during the war.[2]
One month into the war,Supreme ChancellorPalpatine made the role of the Jedi official.[3] While there were those who refused to fight with the start of theJedi Schism,[3] mostJedi Knights andMasters were given therank of general during theClone Wars.ORBAT for theGrand Army of the Republic accommodated for 80 Jedi Generals in command ofcorps (along with aclone marshal commander) and 320 in command oflegions (along with asenior clone commander). There were alsoHigh Jedi Generals in command of the tenSystems Armies, andSenior Jedi Generals in command of the twentySector Armies.Padawans were given the rank ofJedi Commander and put in command of each of the army's 1,280regiments. There were also Jedi of other rank, such asColonelTyneir Renz.
Some Jedi refused to accept their new military status and left theOrder, while others still chose to work undercover rather than on the battlefield. Many of the Jediofficersdied during the war against theSeparatists, andclone troopers killed most of the remaining generals whenOrder 66 was executed bySupreme ChancellorPalpatine, aSith Lord.
