"Ion cannon. Disabled their shields." - ―Ezra Bridger andJon Vander[1]

A v-150 planetary ion cannon atOutpost Beta on the planetHoth.
Ion cannons were a form of armament that fired ionized particles capable of disrupting electronic systems.[2] Larger types could even disable a largecapital ship, such as theMega-ion cannons that were mounted on the side of theSubjugator-class heavy cruiserMalevolence, thev-150planetary ion cannon used by theAlliance to Restore the Republic, or the broadside ion cannons equipped on theMC80Liberty Type Heavy Star Cruiser.[3] During theBattle of Scrim Island, continued fire from several planetary ion cannons dealt a considerable amount of damage to the hull of at least oneArquitens-class light cruiser.[4]
TheEta-2Actis-class light interceptor featured ion cannons that shot bursts of plasma that would cause temporary electrical disruptions to a target upon impact.[5]
Y-wing starfighters were also equipped with ion cannons, most notably those used by the Alliance'sGold Squadron. Though their field of fire was somewhat limited, the ion cannons were quite powerful, with three blasts being sufficient to disable anArquitens-class command cruiser and only one to completely disable aTIE/d "Defender" Multi-Role Starfighter starfighter. This was demonstrated during askirmish in theArcheon Nebula.
History[]
Clone Wars[]

A capital ship ion cannon battery firing
Early in theClone Wars, theConfederacy of Independent Systems equipped the massiveSubjugator-class heavy cruiser, theMalevolence, with immense ion cannons.[6] WithGeneralGrievous in command, theMalevolence attacked dozens ofRepublicwarships and ensured the ion cannons' secrecy from the Republic. Following theBattle of Abregado, the Republic learned of the ion cannons.[7]
TheMalevolence's ion cannons were then disabled by the Republic'sShadow Squadron during thebattle near theKaliida Nebula.[8] TheMalevolence was later destroyed whenJediGeneralAnakin Skywalker sabotaged the ship and caused it to crash into theDead Moon ofAntar.[9]
Galactic Civil War[]

AnImperial-class Star Destroyer could be disabled by multiple ion blasts.
During theGalactic Civil War against theGalactic Empire, theY-wing bombers of theRebellion'sGold Squadron were equipped with ion cannons.[1]MC75 Star Cruisers used by the Rebel Alliance were armed with heavy ion emplacements.[11]
In3 ABY, during theevacuation of theirEcho Base onHoth, the Rebel Alliance used a stationaryion cannon to disableStar Destroyers of theblockadingDeath Squadron, thereby allowing rebel vessels to escape from thestar system.[10] By the later stages of the Galactic Civil War, a number ofMC80Liberty Type Heavy Star Cruisers were outfitted with three portside ion cannons.[3]
First Order-Resistance War[]
When theResistance launchedan attack on theSith Eternal strongholdExegol to prevent the launch of theFinal Order fleet,Allegiant GeneralEnric Pryde ordered the fleet's densly-packedXyston-class Star Destroyers to open fire using only their ion cannons, to minimize damage from potential friendly fire.[12][13]
