Invasion of Naboo
End
Outcome
TheInvasion of Naboo, also known as theNaboo conflict, theNaboo Crisis, thesiege of Naboo, and theoccupation of Naboo was a pivotalplanetary war onNaboo initiated by theTrade Federation in32 BBY during theGreat Peace. The conflict began with the Trade Federation's weeklongblockade of Naboo, before escalating when Naboo'scapitalcity, as well as its surrounding regions, were conquered by theFederation Army'sbattle droids. Both theRoyal House of Naboo and the Federation were members of theGalactic Republic, which sparked apolitical debacle withinGalactic Senate. However, the Federation was secretly in league with theSith led by theSith LordDarth Sidious, who was Naboo'ssenator, Sheev Palpatine. TheDark Lord intended to use the crisis as a pretext to remove theSupreme ChancellorFinis Valorum from office and have himself elected in his place as Chancellor.
During the initial blockade, Valorum sent twoJedi,Qui-Gon Jinn andObi-Wan Kenobi, to negotiate with the Federation, but Sidious ordered that they be killed and that the Federation deploy their forces to Naboo. The Jedi escaped and rescuedQueenPadmé Amidala from the Federation, making their way off-planet and landing on theworld ofTatooine that was controlled by theHutt Clan for refuge after their vessel was damaged while escaping the blockade. There, Jinn discovered a young slave namedAnakin Skywalker, theChosen One destined to bring balance tothe Force.
The group repaired their damaged vessel, howeverDarth Maul revealed himself and fought aduel with Jinn before escaping, and fleeing to the Republic capital world ofCoruscant, where Amidala pleaded for assistance before the Galactic Senate. The Republic's bureaucracy was unable to help Amidala, who called for a vote of no confidence in Chancellor Valorum, leading to an election in which Palpatine was a favorite to win. Knowing she would find no help on Coruscant, Amidala returned to Naboo with the Jedi and planned to defeat the Federation on her own.
Upon her return, Amidala met and forged an alliance with theGungans who lived in Naboo's oceans, and the Gungans agreed to join the fight against the Federation. In thefinal battle, the Gungan army took on the Federation army as a diversion; a wing of starfighters attacked the droid control ship in orbit; and Amidala and the Jedi infiltrated the palace to captureNute Gunray, the Federation viceroy. By the battle's end, Skywalker had destroyed the Federation control ship, the Gungans were victorious, Gunray was captured, and the SithLordDarth Maul was defeated—at the cost of Jinn's life.
The event would be remembered by theNaboo as theOccupation and by critics of the Republic as the "debacle at Naboo." Fought tenyears prior to theClone Wars, the invasion showcased major faults with the Republic to the galactic stage and, ultimately, laid the seeds for the war itself. Meanwhile, for Palpatine, the crisis was a success even though Maul was lost and the Federation had been defeated; with a strong sympathy vote, Palpatine was elected Supreme Chancellor. Over the years, Palpatine furthered his Sith plot to take over the Republic and destroy the Jedi, launching the Clone Wars that would allow him to form aGalactic Empire anddestroy theJedi Order.
Prelude[]
Sith plots[]
- "Supreme Chancellor, delegates of the Senate, a tragedy has occurred, which started right here with the taxation of trade routes, and has now engulfed our entire planet in the oppression of the Trade Federation!"
- ―Senator Sheev Palpatine[3]

Darth Sidious, puppet master of the Invasion of Naboo
At least amillennium before the Invasion, theJedi andSith were atwar. The war ended in the Sith'sdefeat, as their thirst for power caused them to turn on each other, which allowed the Jedi to defeat and nearly destroy the weakened Sith. However, the Sith remained alive through one survivor,Darth Bane, who created theRule of Two in order for the Sith tooperate in secret.[8] Bane's tradition continued throughout the centuries.[9] Eventually,Darth Sidious, apprentice toSith LordDarth Plagueis,[10] betrayed his master by killing him in his sleep, and subsequently succeeded him as theSith Master.[11] Sidious also took on an apprentice of his own,DarthMaul.[3] The Sith were also aided byDooku,[4] a former Jedi Master[12] who maintained good relations with the Order.[4]
Wilhuff Tarkin's stonewalling of the attempts to investigate theEriadu Conference,[10] during which theNebula Front hadkilled the previous leadership of theTrade Federation, which allowed the anti-Galactic RepublicNute Gunray to rise to be theViceroy of the Trade Federation,[13] helped to foment and hasten theNaboo invasion.[10] All the same, thanks to a brief boost in popularity after surviving an assassination attempt at that conference,Supreme ChancellorFinis Valorum had enough political capital needed to pass taxation legislation through theGalactic Senate.[13] UnderProp 31-814D, the Senate made theFree Trade Zones eligible for taxation,[14] which angered the Federation.[13] Around33 BBY,[15] the Federation began to threaten blockades over the new taxes it would need to pay.[16] In32 BBY,[17] all while trade disputes were a major concern for theMid Rim Territories, the Federation would also put forth its own trade bill in the senate, which was repeatedly voted down and brought back up.[1]
Angered by Prop 31-814D[3] and hoping to support its own bill as it was repeatedly debated,[1] the Federationblockaded the Mid Rimplanet Naboo[3] in 32 BBY.[5] Beyond the wider tax concerns,[3] Naboo was also in its own trade dispute with the Federation overplasma mining.[13] The Federation andNaboo delegates had previously met to discuss an issue facing both groups, yet talks had broken down[18] around 33 BBY.[15] Even still, there was more at play with the invasion; in actuality, the invasion was engineered by the shadowy Sidious, who the Federation had allied themselves with.[3] Sidious had been the one who suggested Naboo be the Federation's target, as, in his guise as NabooSenator[7] Sheev[10] Palpatine, he planned to use his people's suffering in a bid for political sympathy,[7] which would push him to be theSupreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic, allowing him to further his own plans.[3] To that end, Sidious, in secret, had engineered various taxation bills to be presented to the Senate which he, as Palpatine, publicly opposed.[1]
Naboo ventures[]
In 32 BBY, that sameyear,[17] the Naboo had held one of their biannual elections, in which the incumbentQueen,Sanandrassa, was defeated by the heavily-favored candidatePadmé Amidala. Sanandrassa had held to a policy of isolation which unwittingly assisted Sidious' plans by weakening Naboo and depleting its stocks of food, leaving its people in danger of starvation if the planet was cut off. Amidala had not publicly criticized these beliefs of Sanandrassa's while campaigning, but after hercoronation, she began working to undo the policies. Eventually, Amidala organized asummit, to which she invited the heads of state of every other Republic member world in theChommell sector. When he was informed of the summit by Amidala herself, Palpatine realized his plans would have to be accelerated. Although many of the planets to which Amidala had extended invitations did not sendambassadors, the summit was otherwise a success. However, the Trade Federation arrived the day the summit ended, with orbital sensors picking up unusual feedback that prompted Amidala'schief guard,CaptainQuarsh Panaka, to haveGovernorKelma ofKarlinus, the last guest to leave, expedite her departure.[1]

The Trade Federation fleet over Naboo
Intending to force Amidala to sign a treaty, which could help their own proposed taxation bill and would place Naboo under their control,[1] the Federation blockaded Naboo with afleet of[19]Lucrehulk-class Battleships,[20]warships illegally modified from the organization'sLucrehulk-class LH-3210 cargo freighters.[19] As the blockade carried on for the nextweek,[21] it would leave the planet ill-supplied and starved.[22] Amidala worked closely with various officials to find allies to help them. On the seventh day of the blockade, an agricultural transport from Karlinus attempted to bring a shipment of grain to Naboo, but the ship war turned away and diverted toEnarc, where the grain was placed into cold storage. WhenGraf Zapalo told Amidala that the planet would begin to suffer with its food supply due to the first yield of crops being turned into fertilizer, Amidala ordered the planet to begin rationing.[1] Meanwhile,Jedi MasterAdi Gallia—a intuitive and intelligent member of theJedi High Council[23] who also maintained an extensive intelligence network[24]—took notice of the strange activity on Naboo, marking her as the first Jedi to become aware of the developing crisis.[23]
In response to Queen Amidala's requests for help, Chancellor Valorum[3]—who had taken a great many political hits[16] in recent months,[25] such as the breakdown of Federation-Naboo talks,[18] the Federation's blockade threats, and[16] the resumption[18] of theAnselmi–Nautolan war[16]—dispatched two ambassadors to speak to both the Naboo and the Trade Federation, sending Jedi MasterQui-Gon Jinn[3]—who happened to be the former apprentice of Dooku[4]—and hisPadawanObi-Wan Kenobi.[3] Jinn had previously been reading up on the taxation bills going before the Senate that were the public cause of the situation, as he had sensed something amiss with them, but neither he nor Kenobi had been able to pinpoint exactly what the problem was.[1] The Senate itself was totally consumed with debate over the blockade, creating the unintended effect of preventing theAlvadorjian Senate bill from reaching the rotunda.[26]
The conflict[]
Negotiations[]

Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi escape from the dioxis-filled meeting chamber.
The two Jedi were scheduled to meet withViceroy Gunray immediately after arriving at Naboo in thestarshipRadiant VII. However,TC-14, the hostessprotocol droid which they encountered first, promptly informed Gunray, hislieutenant,Settlement OfficerRune Haako, and invasion forceCaptainDaultay Dofine, that theambassadors fromCoruscant wereJedi Knights. Terrified at the prospect of facing Jedi, Gunray contactedDarth Sidious and presented the situation. Sidious said the Chancellor should never have bought them into crisis and ordered Gunray tokill the Jedi at once and begin landing histroops on Naboo for an invasion, and when Gunray questioned the invasions' legality, Sidious replied that he would make it legal. Sidious also told Gunray to exclude Dofine from any future communications after the latter implied calling off the plan.[3]
Toxicdioxis gas then flooded the ventilation system in the Jedi's waiting room, and Gunray dispatched asquad ofbattle droids to verify that the Jedi had been destroyed. They had survived the gas, however, andQui-Gon Jinn andObi-Wan Kenobi decimated theOOM command battle droid andOOM-series security droids. The two Jedi continued to cut through thesecurity droids and made their way throughout the ship. Jinn then attempted to cut through theblast doors to thebridge where the Federation leadership was waiting. They nearly succeeded, but the arrival of twoshield-bearingdroidekas forced them to flee the scene. The two Jedi made it to the ship's hangar where they observed thousands ofB1-series battle droids being loaded ontolanding craft. Realizing that an invasion of Naboo was imminent, they stowed away on separatedroid invasion craft to escape to the planet's surface. Kenobi'stransport was forced to crash-land on Naboo, although the Jedi was uninjured.[3]
The subjugation of Naboo[]
Main article:Capture of Theed
- "You were right about one thing, Master. The negotiationswere short."
- ―Obi-Wan Kenobi, to Qui-Gon Jinn[3]

The Trade Federation Droid Army lands on Naboo.
After learning the Jedi had escaped, Gunray contacted invasioncommander, an OOM command battle droid namedOOM-9, and warned him of the Jedi's presence among them and to not underestimate them.[3] OOM-9 had his droid troops and pilots take out communication transmitters, stopping the Naboo population from reporting the invasion or calling for aid, and occupy settlements.[19]
In the capital city of Theed, a communications jam occurred asPadmé Amidala was consulting with Senator Palpatine. The failure promptedTheed'sGovernorSio Bibble to say that it was an invasion, although Amidala reconfirmed her pledge of no fighting. But realizing an invasion was underway, she soon switched places with her decoyHandmaidenSabé.[3] Over the course ofminutes,[27] theTrade Federation military had taken Theed, subduing Naboo's smallRoyal Naboo Security Forces and leaving the planet completely under Federation control. Nute Gunray himself landed in Theed and assumed control fromQueen Amidala's own throne room. After Amidala refused to sign a treaty legalizing the occupation, she and her retinue were to be processed intoCamp Four.[3]
Meanwhile, Kenobi and Jinn had reached the Nabooswamps. After running into localGunganJar Jar Binks, the Jedi went underwater and contactedBossRugor Nass, leader of the Gungans, in the underwatercity ofOtoh Gunga. Although the Gungan leader refused to get involved in the fighting on the surface, he did lend them a Gungan transport, which they used to travel to Theed with Jar Jar. There they found theQueen and her entourage held hostage by battle droids. After a brief skirmish against the escorting droids, the Jedi implored the Queen to travel with them back to Coruscant. Not only would she be safer there, but she would be able to ask the Senate to condemn the invasion and take military action. She eventually agreed.[3]
However, getting past the Trade Federation blockade proved very difficult and theQueen's ship was barely able to scrape by, its damaged shields needing repair byastromech droidR2-D2 at the last possible moment. Since thehyperdrive had begun to leak badly during the escape, the group decided to hide onTatooine in theOuter Rim Territories until a replacement could be found.[3]
In the followingdays, the Trade Federation continued to take over the planet, eventually taking complete control. Following the subjugation of the planet, command transferred from theSaak'ak to the Droid Control Ship[3]Vuutun Palaa, which had been at the heart of the Federation's blockade.[28] After this was done the blockade dispersed, but theYuutun Palaa stayed, and the commanders of theSaak'ak transferred to the control ship.[3]
Return of the Sith[]
Arrival[]
- "Tatooine is sparsely populated. If the trace was correct, I will find them quickly, Master."
"Move against the Jedi first. You will then have no difficulty taking the Queen to Naboo to sign the treaty."
"At last we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi. At last we will have revenge."
"You have been well trained, my young apprentice. They will be no match for you." - ―Darth Sidious and Maul[3]
After finding out that the Queen had escaped the blockade, Darth Sidious was furious. He sent hisSith apprentice,Darth Maul, to find the Queen and the Jedi, destroy the latter, and bring the former back. After landing the Queen's ship on Tatooine, Qui-Gon Jinn went with Amidala—disguised as a handmaiden—and Jar Jar Binks to theMos Espa settlement, where he attempted to barter for parts withWatto, the greedyToydarian owner of ajunkyard. They also met the youngenslaved boyAnakin Skywalker, who invited them back to their home.[3]

On the second day on Tatooine, they bartered with Watto and were allowed to enterSkywalker's podracer into theBoonta Eve Classic. The Jedi and Amidala helped Skywalker complete his podracer. When cleaning a small cut, Jinn was able to acquire ablood sample, which he sent over hiscomlink to Kenobi. The sample revealed a startling discovery—over 20,000midi-chlorians, things which resided in each individual and allowed them to commune withthe Force.[3]

- "My only conclusion can be that it was… a Sith Lord."
- ―Qui-Gon Jinn, after the duel with Darth Maul[3]
Skywalker won thepodrace and was granted his freedom, and Watto gave the Jedi a replacementT-14 hyperdrive generator. Young Skywalker agreed to return to Coruscant to betrained as a Jedi. As he packed up, Obi-Wan made the necessary replacements.[3]
On his ship,Scimitar, Maul traveled to Tatooine. He touched down on the planet's sand and sentprobe droids in different locations to find his targets. One of the probe droids ended up destroyed by Jinn upon discovering its tailing them. Later that day, as the Jedi returned to their ship, Maul ambushed Jinn and his new protege, Anakin Skywalker. Maul leaped fromhisspeeder andclashed with the Jedi. It was only through extreme concentration that Qui-Gon could defend himself against Maul's heavy attacks. As he fended a blow from the Sith, Qui-Gon told a puzzled Anakin to leave and tell the Naboopilot to take off. While he was driven back, Skywalker boarded the Royalcruiser and did as Jinn said. Maul attempted to take Jinn by leaping over him, but Jinn blocked the strike to his back andjumped on the ramp. Now saved from the clutches of the Sith, the Queen and her entourage departed Tatooine for Coruscant. Down in the cruiser's boarding ramp, Jinn expressed his worries and introduced Skywalker to his future master.[3]
Amidala before the Senate[]

- "So many people from all over the galaxy, and all they could do was squabble. I told them that our people were suffering, and they would have made us wait until some committee flew out to the Chommell sector and checked. They were more concerned with voting along the lines of their alliance than they were with listening to problems and trying to find solutions. It was a mess, and Chancellor Valorum did nothing. Nothing."
- ―Padmé Amidala explains the Senate meeting to Sabé[1]

Amidala and Palpatine before the Galactic Senate.
After the duel on Tatooine, the Jedi and Queen Amidala arrived on Coruscant. They were met on the landing platform by Senator Palpatine and Supreme ChancellorFinis Valorum. Palpatine brought them tohis apartment.[3]
While in the apartment, Palpatine explained to the Queen how corrupt and inefficient the Republic had become and expressed scepticism about the possibility that the Senate could act on the invasion; he also underlined the fact that Chancellor Valorum had little real power and that thebureaucrats were in fact the true rulers of the Republic by that point. Given the situation, Palpatine suggested that the Queen called avote of no confidence on the Chancellor, in order to give the Republic a more effective government; or, in alternative, to submit a plea to the courts, which, however, were generally even slower than the Senate to decide. Amidala was unknowingly being manipulated and deceived by Palpatine.
Jinn, Kenobi, and Skywalker appeared before theJedi Council. Jinn reported his encounter with Maul, leaving the Council to consider the possibility that the Sith had returned after a thousand years. Skywalker was tested by the members of the Council, who recognized the boy to be a Force-sensitive, but expressed concern about young Skywalker's feelings of fear and loss.
In a special meeting of the Galactic Senate, Palpatine and Amidala spoke before the thousands of Galactic delegates. Their pleas were instantly accused of being lies and baseless accusations by the Senator of the Trade Federation,Lott Dod, who recommended appointing a commission to ascertain the truth; Dos's proposal was almost immediately supported by senatorAks Moe ofMalastare. Valorum tried to silence Dod and Moe, but he was interrupted byVice ChancellorMas Amedda. Palpatine used this opportunity to further manipulate Amidala into turning on Valorum, by stating that theBureaucrats were the true rulers of the Republic and on the payroll of the Trade Federation, as well as this was when Valorum's influence would reduce. After consulting with Amedda and hisaideSei Taria, Valorum asked Amidala if she would defer her motion and allow the commission to proceed. The Queen responded by saying that she would not defer and that she had not been elected to see her people suffer and die while the Senate discussed the invasion in a committee.[3] Amidala had unknowingly fallen for Palpatine's manipulation and deception.
Exasperated by the Republic's inefficiency and corruption, Amidala shocked the Senate by moving for avote of no confidence in the leadership of Chancellor Valorum, as it had been suggested to her by Palpatine himself. The proposal caused an uproar in the Senate, with many senators calling to proceed to the vote immediately, while Amedda vainly called for order.[3]
Within hours, Amidala's motion of no confidence was passed and Valorum removed from power. Palpatine was nominated as one of the candidates to succeed Valorum and promised Queen Amidala to clean up the rampant corruption;Bail Antilles andAinlee Teem were nominated as well.[3]
Against Palpatine's suggestions, Amidala returned to Naboo, deciding that her fate belonged with that of herpeople. Soon after that, Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi met again with the Jedi Council: the Council denied admittance to Anakin in the Jedi Order, citing his advanced age as the deciding factor, and ordered Kenobi and Jinn to return to Naboo with the Queen and find out what they could about her mysterious assailant to bring the existence of the Sith into light.[3]
The battle for freedom[]
Main article:Battle of Naboo

Darth Maul battles Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Upon their arrival back on Naboo, Amidala and the Jedi formulated a plan tocapture Viceroy Gunray in Theed, thus taking back the planet. With the aid of Jar Jar Binks, analliance was formed with the proud Boss Nass and the Gungans, and CaptainPanaka organized together all Resistance cells.[3]
The plan was for theGungan Grand Army to engage the Droid Army of the Federation in open combat while the Queen and the Jedi quietly infiltrate thepalace in Theed with the remainder of the Royal Security forces to capture the Viceroy. The small number of pilots in theNaboo security forces would then fly into space and attempt to destroy the only battleship still inorbit: the Droid Control Ship, where all the battle droids were controlled from a singlecomputerbrain.[3] Another battle would begin in Camp Four whenMariek Panaka andSergeantTonra led a prison uprising againstOverseerUsan Ollin and her battle droids.[1]
The plan began as intended, but the entire dynamic of the situation changed with the arrival of Darth Maul. The two Jedi engaged the Sith Lord inbattle while the queen led a raid into the throne room. Soon after, Amidala and Security Captain Panaka successfully captured both Gunray and Rune Haako, holding them at gunpoint and outlining their desire for a new treaty. Maul led Jinn and Kenobi through the hangar and intoTheed's power generator complex, where Maul managed to kick Kenobi, who fell several stories below. Jinn was then able to knock Maul back. Jinn jumped down after him, but theSith Lord managed to get up. They moved down the catwalk near the refinery.[3]

Amidala "discusses" a new treaty with Gunray.
Meanwhile, Kenobi was able to jump up on the catwalk Jinn and Maul were on, and ran to help Jinn. But Jinn, Kenobi and Maul were stuck behind thelaser shields, each cut off from the other. Maul waited impatiently looking in mocking contempt at Jinn, who was calmlymeditating, possibly as an attempt to strike the Sith Lord off-guard. The walls shut down, Kenobi ran, and Jinn jumped up and battled Maul once again. At the melting pit, Maul battled the Jedi and mortally wounded Jinn. He then had to face Kenobi. The wall once again shut down and Kenobi was left to face Maul, alone. Maul managed to kick Kenobi into the pit, but Kenobi grabbed hold onto a nozzle which was jutting out a little below Maul..[3]
The Sith Lord then kickedKenobi's lightsaber into the bottomless shaft, past the still hanging Jedi. Calling hisMaster's lightsaber to him, Kenobi jumped and cut through the Sith Lord's waist. Maul then fell into the shaft, presumed dead. Kenobi joined his dying Master who, in his final words, told him to train Skywalker, the fabled "Chosen One" destined to bring balance to the force. Jinn died in a distraught Kenobi's arms. With Maul presumed dead, Amidala's assassination failed, but the Droid Army, however, was still active, until the Droid Control Ship was miraculously destroyed by an unexpected participant in the day's events: young Anakin Skywalker.[3] The destruction of the control ship shut down every Federation droid, with even OOM-9 being temporarily inactive.[7]
Aftermath[]
Effect on Naboo[]

N-1 starfighters of Bravo Flight participate in the celebration parade.
With the defeat of the Trade Federation and the deactivation of its mechanical army, the invasion was over. Peace was restored, as were positive relations between the Gungans and the people of Naboo. Soon after, Palpatine, who had been elected as new Supreme Chancellor in the meantime, arrived on Naboo with members of the Jedi High Council to oversee the arrest of Gunray and Haako.Yoda promoted Kenobi to full Jedi Knight and assigned him to train Skywalker. That evening, Qui-Gon wasgiven aJedi funeral. The Council members believed that Kenobi had destroyed Darth Maul, but he had in fact survived and went into exile. The day after, the Gungans and Naboo celebrated with aparade in Theed, complete with overflights byN-1 starfighters ofBravo Squadron. Amidala and Boss Nass shared a symbolic globe as a Gungan band playedmusic.[3]
In honor of the[7] five hundred forty-three[29] Gungans who had been killed in the battle at the Great Grass Plains, Nass and Amidala vowed to work together, hoping for a new era made up of cooperation and openness, and forged a Naboo—Gungan pact. The subsequent treaty had immediate benefits, providing low-cost medicinal herbs to Theed, mechanical parts used in seawater pumps to Otoh Gunga's engineers, and new trade lines. Even though some Gungans went as far as to relocate to the surface settlements in order to sell their products, the planet's old sentiments made it so the exchange between both civilizations had all but ceased in quiet within a year of the invasion.[7] Nevertheless, relations remained friendly,[30] with the Gungans even being given the right to vote in Naboo's elections.[31]
Although the Naboo had already been protective of the nature around them, treaties were established between the Gungans and Naboo in the aftermath of the invasion that further protected regions like theLake Country.[31] During theClone Wars,[30] Battle of Naboo veteran[3] Roos Tarpals noted that he strongly believed in friendship between the Gungan and Naboo civilizations.[30] The people of Naboo came to simply remember the crisis as "the Occupation."[31]
Galactic consequences[]
- "I guess you can kiss your trade franchise goodbye."
- ―Captain Panaka, to Nute Gunray and Rune Haako[3]
Learning of his former apprentice's death was hard for Dooku, who confronted Sidious atthe Works on Coruscant by saying he had "allowed" Maul to kill Jinn. Dooku was unknowingly followed by Jedi MasterYaddle, whom hedueled and killed after deciding he was too far gone to return to the light.[4] Dooku subsequently replaced Maul as Sidious's apprentice and took on the name "Darth Tyrannus."[32]
The Federation and Valorum were faced with most blame for the invasion, and every subsequent anti-Republic speech called out the "debacle at Naboo."[7] Following the invasion, the Federation's monopoly on shipping in the Outer Rim Territories was broken. This, combined withValorum Shipping's loss of prestige due to scandals and Chancellor Valorum's truncated term, allowedEriadu Mining and Shipping to prosper.[10] The lost cost the company an inconceivable amount of money—a cost that grew as the company then needed to divert a great deal of funds towards Gunray's legal battle[31]—and led to it enduring a period of political exile.[33] However, ultimately, the ineffective Senate failed to make a major move against the Federation,[21] allowing it to recover from the Senate's minor sanctions[34] and, despite no longer holding a monopoly,[10] keep its power over the Free Trade Routes.[13]
Upon his appointment to Chancellor, Palpatine had promised the galaxy that Gunray, his colleagues and the Federation would be penalized for their actions taken towards the Naboo.[3] However, while indicted for his crimes in the Republic, Gunray was eventually acquitted by the Supreme Court following four trials.[32] To add insult to the crisis that had occurred,[13] the Federation remained active with Gunray still acting as its leader.[32] After being acquitted, the Federation continued to exert their influence over the Free Trade Zones, and while the taxation issues were seemingly resolved following the Naboo invasion, the corporation had still continued to block regulations, laws, and taxes. It has also been speculated by historians and accountants that Gunray and the Federation had only sent a third of the taxes it owed to the Republic, after having tied the process up through bureaucracy.[13]
With the Federation's evasion of Republic laws, several worlds decided to create their own trade deals with the corporation, despite their previous oppositions towards them.[13] In fact, during the political exile it did endure, the Federation elected to forge ties with Outer Rim worlds, as well as othermegacorporations, setting the stage for a secessionist movement.[33] A short time prior to his final trial, Amidala's term as Queen expired. Although the Naboo people were willing to amend the Constitution, Amidala stepped down and former QueenRéillata was elected her successor. The new Queen offered Amidala a position as Senator to replace the outgoingOshadam, which she accepted.[31] Eventually,CountDooku was apprenticed to Darth Sidious, but became the public face of theSeparatist Crisis. Gunray continued to despise Amidala for her part in his defeat and sought revenge against her.[32]
The ascension of Palpatine to the post of Supreme Chancellor was part of his grand scheme[3] to put himself intotal control ofthe galaxy.[11] Thanks to the invasion, three major flaws in the Republic government—the lack of anofficial military, the weak central authority, and layers of bureaucracy—were all exposed on the fullgalactic stage, but Palpatine was gifted a reputation of being a crusader for reforms to the Republic government.[7] Although Maul was believed to have died, he had in fact survived,[35] but was crippled, and ended up going into hiding until he was found by his brother,Savage Opress. During all those years, Maul grew obsessed with the concept of having revenge on Kenobi, blaming the Jedi Padawan for his misfortune.[36]
For the Sith, the Invasion of Naboo set into motion a series of events that would culminate into the Clone Wars, the termination of the Jedi Order, and the rise of the Galactic Empire. So much so that at the height of the Clone Wars a decade after, Count Dooku considered the Invasion of Naboo the true start of the war.[30] Despite the routing of Federation forces, the organization secretly left behind alaboratory and ahidden base that the Separatists would later come to utilize throughout the war.
Behind the scenes[]
The Invasion of Naboo first appeared in the1999 filmStar Wars: Episode IThe Phantom Menace.[3] TheEncyclopedia entry for Daultay Dofine said the blockade of Naboo lasted for amonth.[22] However, the later novelQueen's Peril established that Naboo did not have the food stocks to last that long under the blockade.[1] Indeed, the reference bookStar Wars: Battles that Changed the Galaxy established the blockade was in place only a week before the invasion began,[21] which was also implied inQueen's Peril when the chapter that sees the start of the invasion is the same which notes, before a time break mid-chapter, that seven days have passed since the blockade began.[1]
The Phantom Menace does, however, establish that the blockade was withdrawn at some point before the main characters' return to Naboo, with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ric Olié noting that the Droid Control Ship is the only battleship to appear on the Royal Starship's scope.[3] WhileBattles that Changed the Galaxy concurs with this,[21] several other sources have erroneously described the blockade as still being in place during this frame of time. Nute Gunray claims that the Royal Starship managed to get past the blockade inQueen's Peril,[1] and several reference books,[21][37][38] includingBattles that Changed the Galaxy despite its text,[21] feature images that depict several Federation battleships being involved in the battle.[21][37][38] This article assumes the film, and therefore the text inBattles that Changed the Galaxy that supports it, is correct.
