Canon galaxy map

Inner Rim Territories

Astrographical information

"Millennia ago, back when habitable worlds in the Core and the Colonies started gettin' too crowded for comfort, folks began spreadin' out into the regions beyond. As they pushed past their borders and into the great unknown, planetary pioneers found new worlds with untapped resources and unique native species. They dubbed this fresh collection of worlds the Rim—and as the spread continued ever outward, this first batch of planets that got settled eventually came to be known as the Inner Rim (so as not to be confused with the Mid Rim or Outer Rim, both of which we'll get to later."
Strono Tuggs,The Ultimate Cookbook[19]

TheInner Rim Territories, also known as theInner Rim and originally known simply as theRim,[20] was a region ofthe galaxy located between theColonies and theExpansion Region.[6] TheplanetOnderon was located in the Inner Rim,[21] as well as the planetsRiosa,Birren,Bastatha,[3]Arreyel,[11]Li-Toran,[14]Denon,Pasher,[22]Gorse and itsmoon,Cynda,[4] as well asJakku.[6]

Description[]

"Inner Rim worlds are interestin' in that their cultures don't feel quite as homogenized as those you find on most Core Worlds. Sure, plenty of eager outsiders showed up to claim their stakes and make their marks, but most Inner Rim planets still managed to retain a touch of their original personality—no matter how hard the Empire and First Order may have tried to stomp that out of 'em in more recent years."
Strono Tuggs,The Ultimate Cookbook[19]

The Inner Rim was a region ofthe galaxy that was considered part of the "innerplanets." It consisted of a ring between theColonies andExpansion Region.[23] Parts of theInner Rim overlapped with theWestern Reaches.[24]

History[]

Early history[]

Jakku view

The barren desert world of Jakku

The Inner Rim Territories was the frontier ofgalactic civilization forcenturies.[20] When originally settled by colonizers spreading out from the worlds of theCore Worlds andColonies,[23] this area was known simply as "the Rim," but competition for resources saw the need to expand, and the known galaxy grew into areas such as theMid Rim and theOuter Rim Territories. The Inner Rim remained prosperous, however, as colonization spread outwards.[20] At some unknowntime, the Inner Rimplanet ofBirren was settled by bothAlderaanian andArkanisian explorers. The planet developed a hereditarymonarch known as theSupreme governor, which had become purely ceremonial by the time of theNew Republic.[3]

About a thousandyears before theBattle of Yavin, the Inner Rim world ofJakku in theWestern Reaches was known to be the site of an object of value toSheev Palpatine, theSith Lord known asDarth Sidious. In25 BBY,[25] Palpatine and hisAdviserYupe Tashu visited Jakku to supervise an archaeological dig inPlaintive Hand plateau, where the object was rumored to beburied. During that trip, Palpatine first encounteredGallius Rax, a localslave whom he sensed great potential. With Palpatine's help, Rax later rose to the position ofFleet Admiral in theGalactic Empire.[26]

Clone Wars[]

During theClone Wars, the Inner Rim held strategic value to theConfederacy of Independent Systems.[23] The SeparatistSubjugator-class heavy cruiserMalevolence crashed onto theDead Moon of Antar in the Inner Rim during theBattle of the Kaliida Nebula.[27] The Inner Rim world ofOnderon later joinedCountDooku's Confederacy. The planet was represented in theSeparatist Senate byMina Bonteri,[28] who was laterassassinatedby Separatistagents under Dooku.[29]

The Inner Rim planetQuarzite washome to thewarringBelugan andKagespecies.[20] In20 BBY,[30] thebounty huntersAsajj Ventress andBoba Fett accepted ajob from the Belugan dictatorOtua Blank to deliver a chest. After learning that the chest contained a young Kage woman namedPluma Sodi, Ventress refused to proceed with the mission. When Fett insisted on carrying on with the job, Ventress threw him into the chest and handed Fett to Blank. She then freed Pluma and returned her to her brotherKrismo Sodi.[31]

In 20 BBY,[32] theGalactic Republic sent a team consisting of theJediAnakin Skywalker,Obi-Wan Kenobi,Ahsoka Tano, andClone CaptainRex to the planet Onderon to train aresistance movement to fight against the Separatist-backedKingSanjay Rash during theOnderonian Civil War. As a result, the Republic established contact with Mina's sonLux Bonteri and the rebel leaderSaw Gerrera.[33] Following a prolonged military campaign, the Republic and theirOnderonian allies managed to expel theSeparatist forces from Onderon and reinstateRamsis Dendup asKing.[21]

Imperial Era[]

Tarkin-profile

Moff Tarkin, the architect of the Antar Atrocity

Following theend of the Clone Wars and theestablishment of the Galactic Empire, the Inner Rim came to hold strategic significance to the Empire as it had the Separatists before them.[23]Imperial forces underMoffWilhuff Tarkin led a harsh crackdown on the Inner RimmoonAntar 4 known as theAntar Atrocity[34] in18 BBY.[35] Thousands ofGotals andKoorivar, including Republic loyalists, were rounded up,imprisoned, andexecuted. Although theCommission for the Preservation of the New Order tried to cover up the events, media coverage attracted outrage in the Core Worlds.Emperor Palpatine was forced to reassign Tarkin to the Western Reaches. In14 BBY,[36] tworeportersAnora Fair andHask Taff, who covered the Antar Atrocity, later joinedBerch Teller'srebel cell on acampaign against Tarkin.[34]

In11 BBY,[37] the Imperial efficiency expert and industrialist CountDenetrius Vidian embarked on a scheme to defraud the Empire by destroying the planetGorse's moonCynda in order to exploit itsthorilide reserves. This brought him intoconflict with theTwi'lek rebel operativeHera Syndulla and the formerPadawanKanan Jarrus. With the unlikely help of the ImperialCaptainRae Sloane, Syndulla's team managed to expose Vidian's conspiracy. Following Vidian's death, his rivalBaronLero Danthe established surfacemining operations on Gorse's sunward side.[4]

During theImperial Era, the Empire was known to recruit large numbers of prospectiveImperial cadets from the Inner Rim, which it preferred to former Separatist worlds. Sevenmonths after the Battle ofYavin, Imperial forces embarked on a crackdown on the icy Inner Rim planet ofZeitooine which led to thearrest of alocal family. Imperial atrocities of Zeitooine and other worlds helped to motivate more people including the formerTIE fighter pilotThane Kyrell to join theRebel Alliance.[38]

Following the events above Yavin, the Rebel AllianceLieutenantCaluan Ematt wasambushed by Imperial forces on the Inner Rim world ofTaanab but managed to flee to the planetCyrkon inHutt Space.[39] The Empire also annexed the planetRiosa and conscripted the planet's population and resources into building both thefirst andsecond Death Stars. Riosa's manpower and resources were plundered to fuel the Imperial war machine, causing great hardship and impoverishment to the planet. The future New RepublicSenatorRansolm Casterfo grew up during Imperial rule and lost hisparents to hard labor. As a result, Casterfo developed a hatred of Darth Vader.[3]

AfterFleetAdmiral Rax seized control of the Imperial fleets, he ordered his armadas to assemble above the planet Jakku for a showdown with the New Republic, the successor government to the Rebel Alliance.[26] The ensuingBattle of Jakku was a cataclysmic battle which ended theGalactic Civil War in favor of the New Republic. As a result of the fighting, Jakku's surface was littered with the wreckage of countlessstarships from both sides. Jakku became home toscavengers who sifted through the wreckage for objects to sell.[6] A month after the Battle of Jakku, the Empire was confined by the New Republic to parts of the Inner Rim and the Core Worlds as a prelude to theGalactic Concordance.[38]

New Republic[]

At a young age,Rey was left in the care of thejunk bossUnkar Plutt by her parents,Dathan andMiramir, on thedesert planet Jakku as they werechased by Sidious'sSith assassin,Ochi of Bestoon. Just as they left Rey on the planet below, Ochi caught up to them over the planet and executed both. Instead of investigating Jakku, however, an inebriated Ochi found a fewAki-Aki beads Miramir had hidden on her person as a trick: assuming the planetPasaana[40] in theExpansion Region[41] was Rey's hiding place, Ochi left for the planet and died in itsForbidden Valley.[40] On Jakku, Rey worked as ascavenger and hoped her family would one day return even though, deep down, she knew they would never return.[42]

By28 ABY,[43] the Inner Rim planet Riosa had joined the New Republic. The planet's senator Casterfo were aligned with theCentrists, a political faction in theGalactic Senate who favored greater centralization and a strongermilitary. Riosa remained a backwater manufacturing center which had still not fully recovered from Imperial rule. Bastatha was a barren desert world independent of the Republic that hosted anAmaxine warriors'camp led by the former ImperialArliz Hadrassian, who was an agent of theFirst Order, a remnant of the Old Empire.[3]

Following the death of Birren's reigning Supreme governorMellowyn, thePopulist SenatorLeia Organa and her sonBen Solo were designated as the heirs to the supreme governorship. Since Leia and Ben were not interested in assuming that office, Organa agreed to supportLadyCarise Sindian's bid to inherit the supreme governorship of Birren. However, Sindian was an undercover First Order agent who used her position to discover information about Organa's true parentage as the daughter of Darth Vader. The ensuing scandal destroyed Organa'spolitical career. In retaliation, Organa convinced theElder Houses to strip Sindian of all her royal titles.[3]

The Rise of The First Order[]

In34 ABY,[20] theResistancepilotPoe Dameron traveled to Jakku in order to findLor San Tekka, who had obtained amap that would lead them to theJedi MasterLuke Skywalker's location.First Order forces thenattackedTuanulvillage and massacred the inhabitants. Dameron was captured by Kylo Ren but managed to hide the map in hisdroidBB-8. Dameron laterescaped with the help of the disillusionedstormtrooperFinn. After crashing their stolenTIE fighter, the two were separated and Finn managed to find BB-8 and Rey. The trio then fled a First Order attack onNiima Outpost andescaped on theMillennium Falcon into space.[42]
