Located inMandalore'scapitalcity ofSundari,[1] the Royal Academy of Government was originally an institution that groomed the best and brightest ofMandalorian youth to help steer theplanet's future[5] in leadership positions.[6] However, after it was transformed[2] into theImperial Academy of Mandalore,[7] the school instead taughtcadets about combat techniques, weapons technology and repair, and explosives[8] to prepare them for service in theImperial Military.[7] The academy also hadespionage training, attached to which was a unit that taught otherlanguages,[9] includingAqualish andHuttese.[8]Aurebesh, the written form ofGalactic Basic Standard,[9] andMandalorian,[10] the written form ofMando'a, the spoken language of the Mandalorian people,[9] were both used within the academy.[1]

During theClone Wars, a series of conflicts fought between theGalactic Republic and the breakawayConfederacy of Independent Systems,Korkie Kryze, the nephew ofNew Mandalorian rulerDuchessSatine Kryze, attended the Royal Academy of Government along with his friendsAmis,Lagos, andSoniee. At the behest of Duchess Satine, theJedi High Council sentJediPadawanAhsoka Tano to Mandalore to aid her in exposing corruption in the Mandalorian government, under the guise of instructingcadets at the academy. The young Kryze and his friends, with Tano's assistance, worked to expose MandalorianPrime MinisterAlmec's involvement in theblack market.[1]

After the Clone War's conclusion, the Galactic Empire seized control of Mandalore[11] and reconfigured the Royal Academy into the Imperial Academy of Mandalore.[2] A star pupil,[7] the MandalorianSabine Wren studied the tactics used byTwi'lek freedom fighterCham Syndulla[12] andMandalorian Protector leaderFenn Rau used during the Clone Wars[11] and learned that the Empire was developing anew cruiser withgravity wellprojectors powerful enough to pull aship out ofhyperspace.[13] She was also the fastest cadet to complete the language unit during espionage training. During hertime at the academy, Wren encountered a number of Imperial officials that she felt enjoyed being arrogant, comparing them unfavorably with theLothal Academy'sCommandantCumberlayne Aresko.[9] However, her trusting the Empire and following its orders blindly led to a nightmarish[3] experience[8] that caused Wren to abandon the academy and become abounty hunter, eventually joining a group ofrebels who operated on the planetLothal.[14]
