Publisher's summary[]
Jedi masters Yoda and Mace Windu escort a Republic delegation to an archaeological dig, rumored to be the site of a cache of ancient Jedi artifacts. But the lure of the Force is strong, and it's not long before the party comes under attack by marauders intent on taking the relics for themselves, even if they have to go through two Jedi to do it![1]
Plot summary[]
On the planetBursant,Jedi MasterMace Windu tells a man namedMorse, anIktotchiarchaeologist, that he has a bad feeling about letting younglings tour the archaeological dig site. However, Morse reasons that it isn't often that they find ancientJedi relics, and this is a huge educational opportunity, especially in such dark times. WhileGrand MasterYoda spends time with the younglings, Mace Windu senses an artifact that is very powerful, as well as a disturbance. Mace tells Morse that he thought the area was secured, and Morse explains that there are only a few settlements but the people are peaceful. Just then, the localBursantians charge in and attack using spears and other handheld weapons. However, Windu and Yoda are able to usethe Force and easily cast the "warriors" aside, and then retreat with the younglings. While leaving, Yoda runs into a Bursantian holding a Jedipadawan, but he drops him and tells him to go. Yoda understands and tells Windu that must leave, and when Mace questions the artifacts, Yoda says that more is at stake. While fleeing, the two Jedi realize that the Bursantians are not warriors and didn't stand a chance, which causes them to think that something else is going on.
Later while at a fire, Windu explains that the Bursantians were clearly paid mercenaries, but real bad ones. The two meditate, and later that night, they are approached by a Bursantian. He tells the Jedi that he was givencredits to take the treasures, but wasn't told there would be younglings. He says how he has younglings of his own, and they were told to place the artifacts in an abandoned settlement. After the younglings are taken away, he leads the two Jedi to the settlement, but they realize that it's too quiet, and just then, they are attacked by battle droids and Bursantians. Windu starts to question why he lied, and the Bursantian says that he cares about the younglings safety, just not theirs, and he had no choice in his actions.
CountDooku then appears above the Jedi, and he says how he has what he came for, while holding the powerful artifact from earlier. He then gives the Jedi the option of capturing him, or saving the younglings, and he hurls debris at the fleeing younglings. Windu quickly takes action, using the Force to defend the younglings from danger while Yoda engages Dooku and blocks Force lightning with his lightsaber. Dooku quickly becomes cocky and arrogant, causing him to not pay Windu any attention, and this allows Mace to take him out from the side as he hurls the debris back at him. With Dooku incapacitated, theWookieeViiveenn picks up the powerful artifact and takes it with her. When Dooku flees, the Jedi and others, which include Jedi MasterMayanka Catrine, return to their ships, and Windu brings up the negatives with Dooku having escaped and most artifacts destroyed, but Yoda says that the younglings are safe, and everything important is where it should be.
