Huttese writing system

Locations

TheHuttese language had its own accompanyingwriting system of the same name.[2] On theHutt-controlledplanet ofTatooine, podracers bore Huttese writing both on their hulls and on their display screens.[3] Such inscriptions could also be seen on the walls ofCoruscant at thetime of theCold War.[4] An advertisement forHutt's Grotto atStobar Spaceport was written in this alphabet.[5]

Behind the scenes[]

A Huttese alphabet was created for the1999 movieStar Wars: Episode IThe Phantom Menace, in which it was featured during thepodracing sequence. Huttese inscriptions were notably shown on thepodracers' control panels. The numerals for "3", "2" and "1" were also featured on the lap indicators at theMos EspaGrand Arena.[3] The same numerals appeared in the1999 video gameStar Wars: Episode IRacer.[6]

The same glyphs were used in theNar Kreeta level of the2003 video gameStar Wars: Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, although occurrences of that alphabet were written in mirror image when compared toThe Phantom Menace.[7] Those inscriptions were written according to the mapping of a fanmade "Nal-Huttese" font that could be found atGeocities.com as early asJuly, 1999.[8] The readable Huttese inscriptions in the game are "BALE," "RANCOR," "OPEN," "CLOSED," and "PARLOR," all of which made sense in context.[7]

While the original Nal-Huttese font only contained letters A-S, an updated version emerged later onEagleFonts.com, a searchable database of free TrueType fonts.[9] That new version was included inStar Wars: The Old Republic. Inscriptions on planetCoruscant are consistent with spelling the phrases "Black Sun" and "The sun shall rise." On theVaiken Spacedock, a board hanging above the doorway leading to the Hutta departures clearly reads "Hutta."[4]

A different font was created for the TV seriesStar Wars: The Clone Wars.[10] Despite the aforementioned evidences to the contrary,Leland Chee, who maintains theHolocron continuity database, has stated that the updated Geocities font has not been officially endorsed. When asked about that by a Wookieepedia editor on his Facebook account, Chee stated: "Though [the updated Geocities font] has many similarities to a font we have based on letters and numbers seen in The Phantom Menace, this is not an official font. No official fonts have ever been made publicly available."[11]

In concept art for theHutt swamp speeder created for theStar Wars: The Clone Wars episode "Hunt for Ziro," there was a warning in Huttese around theengines, reading "DANGER STATIC ELECTRICITY".[2]
