Gundark

Gundarks were viciouscarnivorousdesertmammals from the planetVanqor. Renowned for their power and ferocity,^[2] the large creatures had sixteen claws^[7] and keen hearing.^[4] To tell someone that they "looked strong enough to pull the ears off a gundark" meant that they were healthy and strong.^[6]

At some point prior toAnakin Skywalker andObi-Wan Kenobi's assignment of guarding SenatorPadmé Amidala from an assassination attempt, Obi-Wan and Anakin fell into a gundarks' nest, although Anakin reminded Obi-Wan that he went in the nest to rescue Obi-Wan.^[8] The gang leaderTasu Leech used a gundark bone ashis rifle's grip.^[9]

A group of gundarks were present inLexim's hunting ground on aforest planet.^[10]

History[]

DuringAnakin Skywalker's apprenticeship underObi-Wan Kenobi, Kenobi fell into a nest of gundarks. However, Skywalker was able to rescue him from the nest.^[8] During theClone Wars, Kenobi and Skywalkerpursued CountDooku to Vanqor. After Dooku escaped, they were then confronted by one. Skywalker was chased by one, until Kenobi knocked it unconscious. The gundark was sealed in a cave by Skywalker's Padawan,Ahsoka Tano, as well as severalclone troopers.^[5]

After the Jedi CruiserEndurancecrash-landed on Vanqor, Skywalker andMace Windu, along withR2-D2 andR8-B7 went to examine the crash site for survivors. Unfortunately, a pair of gundarks attacked the two astromechs and R8 was torn apart. As the gundarks attempted to do the same to R2, a bomb went off and killed one of the gundarks. R2 tried to send off a distress signal to Coruscant usingSkywalker's interceptor, but was forced to tie a gundark to it in order to pull it away.^[11]

AMing Po animal trainer used two gundarks to battle Windu onZardossa Stix. With help fromJar Jar Binks, Windu succeeded in killing one gundark, while the surviving gundark fled.^[12]

Trandoshans, such asGarnac and members of hishunting guild, would hunt gundarks, skin them for their pelts and put them on display.^[13]

Lor San Tekka wore abelt made of gundark hide.^[9]Zorii Bliss woregloves from the same material.^[14]

Gundarks were first mentioned inStar Wars: Episode VThe Empire Strikes Back, though they did not appear incanon until the first season of theStar Wars: The Clone Wars television series. Their first appearance in anyStar Wars media was in the 1981 Marvel comicStar Wars (1977) 51.
