"What makes these littletrees sospecial that you two Rebels would try to bluff your way in here tosteal them?"
"These are all that remain of thetree that grew at the heart of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant."
CommandantHurron and Luke Skywalker[3]

TheGreat Tree was an ancientForce-sensitiveunetitree that once grew at theheart of theJedi Temple onCoruscant, a massiveziggurat that acted both as a school and a monastery for theJedi Order. After theClone Wars, whenDarth Sidiousdeclared himselfEmperor ofthe galaxy, thetemple was converted into the Imperial Palace and the tree was removed. Fragments were kept in a secretImperialbase, from which they were laterrecovered byLuke Skywalker andShara Bey. Bey and herhusband,Kes Dameron, planted one of the fragments, which Skywalker gifted to them, outside theirhome onYavin 4.

History[]

"They say it is old, even older than Yoda, that it originally stood on Ossus, at the heart of the First Temple. I don't know how many Jedi have trained beneath its branches, or how many birds have roosted among its leaves, but I knew it would get his attention."
Dooku, in a message toJenza, talking about the Great Tree onCoruscant[2]
Bey and Dameron planted their part of the tree on Yavin 4, near their home.

The Great Tree[4] was an ancientForce-sensitivetree believed to have grown at theheart of theJedi Order'stemple onOssus. It was later moved to the newerJedi Temple ofCoruscant,[2] where it was placed in acourtyard used totrainJedi younglings.[5]

During his time in the Jedi Temple,Ky Narec, aJedi Knight, enjoyedfeeding and watchingsong sparrows andcrown finches fly around the Great Tree.[2]

Jedi MasterDooku broughtQui-Gon Jinn to the Great Tree when Jinn was a boy. Jinn was fascinated with the Great Tree as he was born on Coruscant and knew nothing like it.[6]

Due to being aMirialan and having a strong regard for spiritual connection to plants, the JediPadawanBarriss Offee was naturally drawn to the tree. Offee noted the tree was a place where she could not sense darkness and shemeditated there as she was not able to do so in her ownroom. Prior to departing for aninvasion of Geonosis[7] in21 BBY,[8] Offee meditated at the tree with her friend, theJedi KnightTutso Mara.[7]

WhenDarth Sidious, a malevolentDark Lord of the Sith, took control of theGalactic Republic, heappointed himselfEmperor and startedexterminating theJedi. Upon taking over theJedi temple for himself, the Emperor turned it into the Imperial Palace, and he removedthe Force-sensitivetree. Two living twigs, all that remained of the tree, were stored in asecret base installed onVetine. These fragments wererecovered byCommanderLuke Skywalker, the last knownJedi Knight, andLieutenantShara Bey of theAlliance to Restore the Republic. Skywalker kept one of the fragments and gifted the other to Bey and herhusband,Kes Dameron, who planted it outside of theirnew home onYavin 4 after concluding their service to the Rebellion.[3]

Beydied in10 ABY.[9] Some time after her death, her son,Poe Dameron, who often played on the growing Force tree as a child, rigged a pair of oldpodracerengines to his father'skoyo picker in order to pick their koyo grove. The exhaust from the engines singed the tree, so Kes made his son spend the next year nursing the tree to health.[10]

Behind the scenes[]

"If he's trying to recover knowledge, you know, it's like I don't want to do a holocron; holocrons have been done, don't do that. And I could hear both Pablo and Leland groan, and they're like, 'Yeah not another holocron.' And we'd been talking a lot about Palpatine and really about how horrible he was, and I think it was Pablo who said, 'You know what, you should use the tree from the Jedi Temple, from theClone Wars cartoon,' and I was like, 'Oh that's a fantastic idea. That's a fantastic idea.' And that's where it came from. It was quite literally Story Group saying, 'Use the tree!' and I said, 'Oh that's beautiful.' And that's such a beautiful metaphor, you know, and it's a perfect metaphor for what the galaxy is like afterReturn of the Jedi."
―Greg Rucka[11]

The ancient tree in the Jedi Temple was first seen in "The Wrong Jedi," afifth season episode of the animated television seriesStar Wars: The Clone Wars.[12] Concept art for the tree, including the surrounding training ground, was done byAndre Kirk in2011.[13]Greg Rucka, author of thecomic book mini-seriesStar Wars: Shattered Empire, chose to use the tree in the comic'sfourth issue because he wanted Luke Skywalker to pursue a Jedi object that wasn't "just anotherholocron."[14] Rucka, who received the idea fromPablo Hidalgo and theLucasfilm Story Group, felt the tree was a strong metaphor for rebuildingthe galaxy after the events ofStar Wars: Episode VIReturn of the Jedi.[11]
