"The Grand Master is to take a Padawan. This is a rare honor."
―Tera Sinube[4]

Grand Master orGrandmaster, also known asGrand Jedi Master, was a title generally bestowed on the oldest and wisestJedi. Whereas theMaster of the Order served as leader of theJedi High Council, the Grand Master was the head of theJedi Order. The title was shared byJedi MastersXo Lahru,Pra-Tre Veter, andYoda during theHigh Republic Era. After Veter'scapture by theNihilpirates,Ry Ki-Sakka was appointed in his place, before Veter was ultimatelyexecuted by the Nihil. Yoda continued to serve as the Grand Master in thefinal years of theGalactic Republic, and was one of the few survivors of theGreat Jedi Purge thatcommenced near the end of theClone Wars.

Roles and powers[]

"Count Dooku was Yoda's apprentice, and Count Dooku has fallen to the dark side."
"All of us have apprenticed to Master Yoda. He cannot be held accountable for Dooku's descent."
―Ki-Adi-Mundi and Obi-Wan Kenobi[5]

The training of Jedi younglings was a responsibility that Yoda carried as Grand Master of the Jedi Order.

The Grand Master oversaw theJedi Order.[3] The title of Grand Master was generally reserved for the oldest and wisest livingJedi Master. It was distinct from the office ofMaster of the Order, the holder of which led theJedi High Council.[6] However, it was possible for a single individual to hold both titles at the sametime.[7] The Grand Master would humbly teach the mostjunior members of the Order, younglings, completing the circle ofJedi training.[8] According toTera Sinube, it was rare for a Grand Master to train his ownPadawan and was therefore regarded as an honor.[4] Sometimes, theJedi Order had multiple Grand Masters simultaneously.[9]

History[]

"For 800 years have I trained Jedi. My own counsel will I keep on who is to be trained."
―Yoda[10]

During theHigh Republic Era, at the time of theGreat Hyperspace Disaster,[9] several Jedi shared the rank of Grand Master, including MastersXo Lahru,[11]Yoda,[9] andPra-Tre Veter,[12] who attended thededication of the Starlight Beacon.[9] Jedi MasterRy Ki-Sakka also attained the title after the death of Veter.[13]

By the time of theInvasion of Naboo,[14] two hundred years after the Great Disaster,[15] the still-living Yoda was the sole holder of the rank of Grand Master.[7] Yoda had trained generations of Jedi for eightcenturies,[10] and continued as Grand Master through theClone Wars.[7]

During the Clone Wars, Grand Master Yoda commanded the Grand Army of the Republic as a Jedi General.

During the conflict in which Yoda and other members of the Order led theGrand Army of the Republic asJedi Generals,Ki-Adi-Mundi became concerned about Yoda's state of mind, given the Grand Master's role in trainingCountDooku prior to Dooku's descent to thedark side of the Force. However,Obi-Wan Kenobi countered that every Jedi in their time had been apprenticed to the Grand Master, and therefore dismissed the notion that Yoda was responsible for Dooku's actions as aSith Lord.[5] After theDark Lord of the SithDarth Sidious managed tokill the majority of Jedi throughoutthe galaxy, the Grand Master went into exile on the planetDagobah.[16]
