"Grand admiral is an Imperial ranking. I, like you once did, identify asfleet admiral—but you seem to have taken the title 'Grand Admiral' for yourself."
―Grand Admiral Rae Sloane andFleet Admiral Gial Ackbar[4]

Grand Admiral was a seniormilitary rank in theImperial Navy of theGalactic Empire. It was also a rank in theMon Cala Mercantile Fleet. After thedownfall of the Empire, the rank was active in theFirst Order, one of its successor states.

Description[]

Galactic Empire[]

Overview[]

The Imperial rank of Grand Admiral was one of the most senior ranks in the entireImperial Military, and to be given the title was seen as a great honor.[4] A Grand Admiral was typically given command of a fleet, such as Thrawn with theSeventh Fleet[10] and Savit with theThird Fleet.[11] A Grand Admiral also had the authority to issue the status of a most wantedbounty.[12] The rank was held by only twelveImperial officers at a time, who were generally recognized as possessing superior skills in tactics and strategy.[13]

Imperial officers who served as Grand Admirals include:

Uniform[]

"Even if the locals do not recognize the uniform of an Imperial grand admiral, they will nevertheless recognize that itis a uniform."
―Grand Admiral Thrawn, before landing onBatuu[14]

Unlike thetraditional Imperial uniform, which generally consisted of a plain gray tunic, the Imperialgrand admiral's uniform was white with golden epaulets.[10] Such accessories were generally uncommon in the Imperial Military, as they seemed to put an emphasis on status above duty and humility.[15]

Mon Cala[]

TheMon Calamari monarchy also used the rank of Grand Admiral within their structure for theMon Cala Mercantile Fleet. The rank could be used concurrently with other titles and positions, includingRegent ofMon Cala,Warden of theKing of Mon Cala, andDual Protector of the Two People.[3]

Mon Calamari individuals who served as Grand Admiral include:

  • Dors Urtya— Regent of Mon Cala, who additionally commanded the Mon Calamari Merchant Fleet.[3]

Imperial Era[]

―Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin, Admiral Kassius Konstantine, and Grand Admiral Thrawn[10]

Grand Admiral Mitth'raw'nuruodo "Thrawn" receives his rank from Emperor Palpatine himself.

Following theClone Wars, theImperial Military reorganized its branches under theNew Order. At the top of the new fleet structure was the rank of grand admiral.[13] Shortly after his victory over theBatonn sector insurgency,ChissAdmiralThrawn was awarded the rank of Grand Admiral byGalactic EmperorSheev Palpatine,[10] becoming one of the Empire's twelve Grand Admirals.[11]

Imperial Grand Admirals occasionally cooperated in strategic concerns, such as Thrawn andBalanhai Savit concerning delays toProject Stardust. However, their dealings were often colored by intra-service struggles—such as Thrawn's advocacy of theTIE Defender program and Savit's opposition to, and secret sabotage of, theDeath Star—and some Imperials, such asBrierly Ronan, considered the Grand Admirals nothing more than political appointees. However, Thrawn himself did not understand nor care about Imperial politics. After Thrawn discovered Savit's sabotage, he offered his fellow Grand Admiral a chance at redemption by helping himbattle theGrysk Hegemony, but Savit declined.[11]

Thrawn andhis forces were pulled away from the Empire by the youngJediEzra Bridger, who sacrificed a happy life with his found family by summoning a pod ofpurrgil, which pulled him, Thrawn, and everyone aboard Thrawn'sflagshipChimaera[16] intoanother galaxy. There, Bridger, Thrawn, and Thrawn's forces found themselves exiled on the planetPeridea.[5] During theGalactic Civil War,Mon Calamari monarchyRegentDors Urtya served as the Grand Admiral of theMon Cala Mercantile Fleet, which at the time was commandeered by the Galactic Empire.[3]

New Republic Era[]

Grand Admiral Rae Sloane acted as public leader of the crumbling Empire

Following theBattle of Endor,Rae Sloane served as Grand Admiral and commanded the remnants of theImperial Navy.[4]New RepublicFleet AdmiralGial Ackbar was considered a Grand Admiral byImperial officers,[9] although it was not an official rank utilized by the New Republic.[4] Taking charge of the Emperor'sContingency to reform the Empire,[17] Sloane continued to posses the rank of Grand Admiral during the time she was part of theFirst Order.[6] Ultimately, however, a mysterious being known asSnoke,[18] secretly a puppet of the resurrected Emperor,[8] took control of the First Order instead of Sloane or other expected leaders.[18]

Thrawn, meanwhile, remained stranded in the other galaxy on Peridea, where he discovered the slumberingGreat Mothers. Agreeing to take them and their cargo back to the main galaxy with him, Thrawn entered into an alliance with the Great Mothers,[19] who reached out toMorgan Elsbeth and arranged for her arrival with the prototype of thehyperspace transport ring, theEye of Sion,[5] which could return Thrawn's forces and the Great Mothers to the galaxy. Thrawn, his forces, and the Great Mothers mounted a successfulescape from Peridea.[19] Thrawn's return promised to galvanize the galaxy'sImperial Remnants. At that time, Thrawn was thought to be the last surviving Grand Admiral.[20]

Grand Admiral Thrawn in the Legends continuity

Timothy Zahn, author of the1991Star Wars Legends novelHeir to the Empire, introduced the rank of "Grand Admiral" for the villain of that novel,Grand AdmiralThrawn.[21] Zahn wanted Thrawn to be a military leader rather than apolitical title-holder ordarksider, but felt a normalAdmiral would be too mundane. He therefore decided to use the title "Grand Admiral," which he had encountered while readingWilliam L. Shirer'sThe Rise and Fall of the Third Reich in the context of its use in theGerman Navy.[22] The rank was introduced into the moderncanon continuity by the novelAftermath[9] and was first pictured through Thrawn's return to canon inStar Wars Rebels.[10]
